Supplementary features in injection molded products, which are boss, rib and snap fit, are mainly located in the products. These features might make molding flow improper in injection processing and consequently give rise to some of molding troubles such as short shot and hesitation. The sink mark on boss parts is generated by the volumetric shrinkage that is caused by both the molding thickness and the closed boss height. The volumetric shrinkage is affected by packing pressure and its amount tends to decrease by increasing the packing pressure. The packing pressure can therefore increase flow rate to a boss part and causes the sink mark depth to increase. As the molding thickness and the closed boss height in the boss part can increase the part volume, these may yield bad solidifying and also extend the molding cycle. In this paper, both the injection molding test and the flow analysis were carried out to investigate the effect of sink marks generated in the boss part of injection molded products.
In nano-imprint lithography (NIL) process, which has shown to be a good method to fabricate polymeric patterns, several kinds of pattern defects due to thermal effects during polymer flow and mold release operation have been reported. A typical defect in NIL process with high aspect ratio and low resist thickness pattern is a resist fracture during the mold release operation. It seems due to interfacial adhesion between polymer and mold. However, in the present investigation, FEM simulation of NIL molding process was carried out to predict the defects of the polymer pattern and to optimize the process by FEA. The embossing operation in NIL process was investigated in detail by FEM. From the analytical results, it was found that the lateral flow of polymer resin and the applied pressure in the embossing operation induce the weld line and the drastic lateral strain at the edge of pattern. It was also shown that the low polymer-thickness result in the delamination of polymer from the substrate. It seems that the above phenomena cause the defects of the final polymer pattern. To reduce the defect, it is important to check the initial resin thickness.
In recent, recycling of plastic material has became a major issue due to the landfills and environmental problem. This study investigated fluidity of thermoplastic vulcanizate(TPV), which is for automobile component parts such as weather strip in order to replace ethylene propylene rubber (EPDM). So, using the spiral flow test mold and panel cover mold, we conducted an experiment on fluidity of TPV with injection molding. As results of injection molding experiment, the recycled TPV's flow length was a little bit longer than virgin TPV and a case of panel cover, the filled weight was almost same quantity.
The importance of simulation of plastic flow in the injection mold is increasing as the parts are more complex, but the small-scale enterprises can't afford to invest for the infra individually. CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) service was naturally born based on these needs. This paper presents the engineering collaboration model between the large and the small/medium enterprises in the field of injection molds. Based on the engineering collaboration hub and CAE service, small-scale enterprises could research the necessary technology and develop the proper products. The analysis results of CAE are provided by the integrated visualization system on the web. This paper also deals with the delivery shorting process of CAE service for electric/electronic parts which should meet the needs of customers as soon as possible.
The objective of this paper is to present a methodology for automatically balancing multi-cavity injection molds with the aid of flow simulation. After the runner and cavity layout has been designed, the methodology adjusts runner and gate sizes iteratively based on the outputs of flow analysis. This methodology also ensures that the runner sizes in the final design are machinable. To illustrate this methodology, an example is used wherein a 3-cavity mold is modeled and filling of all the cavities at the same time is achieved. Based on the proposed methodology, a multicavity mold with identical cavities is balanced to minimize overall unfilled volume among various cavities at discrete time steps of the molding cycle. The example indicates that the described methodology can be used effectively to balance runner systems for multi-cavity molds.
There occur not only many problems in the injection process but also low quality productivity due to the injection conditions of various injection factors. Injection molding process factors such as molding temperature, injection pressure, flow rate and flow velocity, must be controlled properly in filling and packing phases in the injection molding process. In this study, effects of these factors on the injection molding were investigated through the flow analysis for the holding pressure affecting cooling time. Results of this study would be helpful to setting of holding pressure for optimization of forming condition in order to reduce cooling time in injection molding.
In recent years, compression molding of fiber-reinforced thermoplastics has been increased in commercial aspects. During a compression molding process of composites, the flow analysis must be developed in order to accurately predict the finished part properties as a function of the molding process parameters. In this paper, a new model is presented which can be used to predict the flow under consideration of the slip of mold-composites and extensional & shear viscosity ratio M and slip parameter$\alpha$ on the mold filling parameters are discussed.
