  • In this study, a series of ionic liquids based electrolytes for lithium batteries were prepared by mixing the anion functionalized ionic liquid, [DMIm][MPEGP] (1,3-dimethylimidazolium (2-methoxy(2-ethoxy(2-ethoxy)))-ethylphosphite), with the lithium salt, LiTf2N (lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide), and the concentration of lithium salt was varied between 0 and 3.0 molar ratio. We observed the ionic mixtures became opaque and spontaneously aggregated to form a thermotropic ionic liquid crystal. Extensive spectroscopic examinations of the ionic liquid crystals were carried out to investigate their self-organized structures and the ion transport behavior depending on the concentration of lithium salt. An increase in the ionic conductivity was observed for the ionic liquid crystals related to the ability to form ion diffusion pathways along the ordered structures, resulting in improved electrochemical performances of lithium batteries.

  • The critical micelle concentration(CMC) values of Dodecylpyridinium bromide(DoPB) were determined by an electric conductivity method at 1${\sim}$2000 bars and $25^{\circ}C$. The CMC of DoPB increases with the addition of urea in the whole pressure region studied, and the CMC increases with an increase of the pressure in the low-pressure region, while in the high-pressure region the CMC decreases. The partial molar volume change $({\Delta}V^m_o)$ on micellization was also investigated in some urea aqueous solutions. The change $({\Delta}V^m_o)$ was reduced by the addition of urea. The results suggest that the "iceberg" structure of water around the hydrocarbon chain of the monomeric surfactant is effectively broken down by urea.

  • New series of Mn(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) of the 2-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-N'-(2,5-dihydroxybenzylidene) acetohydrazide have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis, $^1H$-NMR, mass and ESR spectra, magnetic susceptibility and molar conductivity measurements. The spectral data and magnetic measurements of the complexes indicate that, the geometries are either square planar or octahedral. The biological activity of the ligand and its complexes against fungi (Aspergillus nigar and Fusarium oxysporium) were investigated. The metal complexes exhibited higher activity than both the parent ligand and the corresponding metal ion.

  • A PFCB-containing biphenylene ether polymer was synthesized and sulfonated using chlorosulfonic acid and then cast into membranes from their solutions for fuel cell applications. Sulfonation reactions were carried out by changing the molar ratio of chlorosulfonic acid and the PFCB-containing biphenylene ether polymer under fixed time and temperature. The resulting sulfonated polymers showed different sulfonation degree (SD), ion exchange capacity (IEC), and water uptake. With the increment of the content of chlorosulfonic acid, the SD, IEC, water uptake of the sulfonated polymer membranes increased. The ion conductivity of the sulfonated PFCB-containing biphenylene ether polymers was compared with that of Nafion 115.

  • The twelve macrocycle (L) complexes of cadmium(II) nitrate have been synthesized: $CdL(NO_3)_2$. All the complexes have been indentified by elemental analysis, electric conductivity measurements, IR and NMR spectroscopic techniques. The molar electric conductivities of the complexes in water and acetonitrile solvent were in the range of 236.8-296.1 $cm^2{\cdot}mol^{-1}{\cdot}ohm^{-1}$ at 25$^{\circ}$C. The characteristic peaks of macrocycles affected from Cd(II) were shifted to lower frequencies as compared with uncomplexed macrocycles. A complex with 1,4,8,11-tetrakis(methylacetato)-1,4,8,11-tetraaza cyclodecane (L4) exhibited two characteristic bands such as strong stretching (1646 $cm^{-1})$, and weaker symmetric stretching band (1384 $cm^{-1})$. NMR studies indicated that all nitrogen donor atoms of macrocycles have greater affinity to cadmium(II) metal ion than do the oxygen atoms. The $^{13}$C-resonance lines of methylene groups neighboring the donor atom such as N and S were shifted to a direction of high magnetic field and the order of chemical shifts were $L_1 < L_2 < L_3 < L_6 < L_4$. Also the chemical shifts values were larger than those of methylene groups bridgeheaded in side-armed groups. This result seems due to not only the strong interaction of Cd(Ⅱ) with nitrogen donors according to the HSAB theory, but weak interaction of Cd(Ⅱ) and COO- ions or sulfur which is enhanced by the flexible methylene spacing group in side-armed groups. Thus, each additional gem-methyl pairs of L_3, L_4\;and\; L_6$ macrocycles relative to $L_1, L_2,\;and\;L_5$ leads to an large enhancement in Cd(II) affinity. ^{13}C$-NMR spectrum of the complex with $L_{12}$ (1,5,9,13-tetracyclothiacyclohexadecane-3,11-diol) reveals the presence of two sets of three resonance lines, and intensities of the each resonance line have the ratio of 1 : 2 : 2. This molecular conformation is predicted as structure of tetragonal complex to be formed by coordinating two sulfur atoms and the other two sulfur atoms which is affected by OH-groups.

  • The $Li_2Mn_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}SiO_4$ silicate was prepared by blending of $Li_2MnSiO_4$ and $Li_2FeSiO_4$ precursors with same molar ratio. The one of the silicates of $Li_2FeSiO_4$ is known as high capacitive up to ~330 mAh/g due to 2 mole electron exchange, and the other of $Li_2FeSiO_4$ has identical structure with $Li_2MnSiO_4$ and shows stable cycle with less capacity of ~170 mAh/g. The major drawback of silicate family is low electronic conductivity (3 orders of magnitude lower than $LiFePO_4$). To overcome this disadvantage, carbon composite of the silicate compound was prepared by sucrose mixing with silicate precursors and heat-treated in reducing atmosphere. The crystal structure and physical morphology of $Li_2Mn_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}SiO_4$ was investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The $Li_2Mn_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}SiO_4$/C nanocomposite has a maximum discharge capacity of 200 mAh/g, and 63% of its discharge capacity is retained after the tenth cycles. We have realized that more than 1 mole of electrons are exchanged in $Li_2Mn_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}SiO_4$. We have observed that $Li_2Mn_{0.5}Fe_{0.5}SiO_4$ is unstable structure upon first delithiation with structural collapse. High temperature cell performance result shows high capacity of discharge capacity (244 mAh/g) but it had poor capacity retention (50%) due to the accelerated structural degradation and related reaction.

  • A series of macrocyclic complexes of the type [M(L/L')$(NO_3)_n$].$mH_2O$ and [VO(L/L')($SO_4$)].$2H_2O$, where L/L' is a Schiff base "3,4,10,11-tetraphenyl/tetramethyl-1,2,5,6,8,9,12,13-octaaza cyclotetradeca-2,4,9,11-tetraene-7,14-dithione" derived from thiocarbohydrazide (TCH), benzilmonohydrazone (BMH)/diacetylmonohydrazone (DMH) and carbon disulphide, M = $UO_2$ (VI), Th(IV) and ZrO(IV), n = 2, 4, m = 2, 3, have been synthesized via metal ion template methods. The complexes are characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, thermal analysis, molar conductivity, magnetic moment, electronic, infrared and $^1H$-NMR spectral studies. The ESR and cyclic voltammetry studies of the vanadyl complexes have been carried out. The results indicate that the VO(IV) ion is penta-coordinated yielding paramagnetic complexes; $UO_2$(VI) and ZrO(IV) ions are hexacoordinated where as Th(IV) ion is octa-coordinated yielding diamagnetic complexes of above composition.

  • A diketo-type ligand was synthesized by the Knoevenagel condensation reaction of thiophene-2-aldehyde with acetylacetone, subsequently its transition metal complexes with Cu(II), Ni(II), and Co(II) chlorides were also prepared. All the complexes were characterized by various physico-chemical methods. The molar conductivity data reveals ionic nature for the complexes. The electronic spectrum and the EPR values suggest square planar geometry for the Cu(II) ion. Interaction of the Cu(II) complex with CTDNA (calf thymus DNA) was studied by absorption spectral method and cyclic voltammetry. The $k_{obs}$ values versus [DNA] gave a linear plot suggesting psuedo-first order reaction kinetics. The cyclic voltammogram of the Cu(II) complex reveals a quasi-reversible wave attributed to Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox couple for one electron transfer with $E_{1/2}$ values -0.240 V and -0.194 V. respectively. On addition of CTDNA, there is a shift in the $E_{1/2}$ values 168 mV and 18 mV respectively and decrease in Ep values. The shift in $E_{1/2}$ values in the presence of CTDNA suggests strong binding of Cu(II) complex to the CTDNA.

  • A relation between antimicrobial activities and the formation constants of solid complexes of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II) and Fe(III) with tridentate Schiff base ligand, 4-hydroxy-3(1-{2-(benzylideneamino)-phenylimino}-ethyl)-6-methyl-2Hpyran-2-one (HL) derived from o-phenylene diamines, dehydroacetic acid (DHA) and p-chloro benzaldehyde have been studied. The ligand and metal complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, conductivity, magnetic susceptibility, thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, IR, $^1H$-NMR, UV-vis and mass spectra. From the analytical data, the stiochiometry of the complexes was found to be 1:2 (metal:ligand) with octahedral geometry. The molar conductance values suggest the nonelectrolytic nature of metal complexes. The X-ray diffraction data suggests monoclinic crystal system for Ni(II) and orthorhombic crystal system for Cu(II) and Co(II) complexes. The IR spectral data suggest that the ligand behaves as tridentate ligand with ONN donor atoms sequence towards central metal ion. Thermal behavior (TG/DTA) and kinetic parameters calculated by Coats-Redfern method suggests more ordered activated state in complex formation. The protonation constants of the complexes were determined potentiometrically in THF:water (60:40) medium at $25^{\circ}C$ and ionic strength ${\mu}=0.1\;M$ ($NaClO_4$). Antibacterial activities in vitro were performed against Staphylococcus aureu and Escherichia coli. Antifungal activities were studied against Aspergillus Niger and Trichoderma. The effect of the metal ions and stabilities of complexes on antimicrobial activities are discussed.

  • Biochar (BC) from biomass pyrolysis is a carbonaceous material that has been used to remove various contaminants in the environment. The eliminatory action for burcucumber (Sicyos angulatus L.) as an invasive plant is being consistently carried out because of its harmfulness and ecosystem disturbance. In this study, burcucumber biomass was converted into BCs at different pyrolysis temperatures of 300 and $700^{\circ}C$ under a limited oxygen condition. Produced BCs were characterized and investigated to ensure its efficiency on antibiotics' removal in water. The adsorption experiment was performed using two different types of antibiotics, tetracycline (TC) and sulfamethazine (SMZ). For the BC pyrolyzed at a high temperature ($700^{\circ}C$), the values of pH, electrical conductivity, and the contents of ash and carbon increased whereas the yield, mobile matter, molar ratios of H/C and O/C, and functional groups decreased. Results showed that the efficiency of BCs on antibiotics' removal increased as pyrolysis temperature increased from 300 to $700^{\circ}C$ (38 to 99% for TC and 6 to 35% for SMZ). The reaction of ${\pi}-{\pi}$ EDA (electron-donor-acceptor) might be involved in antibiotics' adsorption to BCs. BC has potential to be a superior antibiotics' adsorbent with environmental benefit by recycling of waste/invasive biomass.
