Chitosan, a natural cationic macromolecular material, has been known for its moisturizing and healing effect due to the coating action based on strong ionic bonding when the chitosan is treated on hair strands. In this study, the acidic aqueous chitosan solution was prepared to treat healthy hair, and damaged hair due to bleaching, relatively thin hair and thick hair specimens. The chitosan treatment effect was reviewed by comparing spectrophotometric and mechanical characteristics of the chitosan treated and untreated specimens. Electrostatic voltage was somewhat reduced after the chitosan treatment. Smoothly coated surface was observed, in the SEM images, especially for damaged hair specimens. The values of breaking strength, which is one of the indicators of the internal characteristics of hair, was high in the case of chitosan treated samples. The values of elongation was also high in the case of chitosan treated samples, which proves the chitosan treatment effect. The friction force, one of the indicators of surface characteristics, was reduced for the case of chitosan treated samples.

Pericarpium castaneae extracts have variously potent activities, such as anti-oxidative activity and free radical scavenging activity. in vivo and in vitro studies both indicate that pericarpium castaneae extracts acts as a free radical scavenger($IC_{50}:7.6{\mu}g/ml$) stronger than gallic acid($IC_{50}:12.5{\mu}g/ml$) and ellagic acid($IC_{50}:15{\mu}g/ml$) which could prevent cutaneous UV damages and skin aging. The extracts showed a good effect as a anti-oxidant($IC_{50}:50{\mu}g/ml$). It was shown that the appearance of wrinkle in human skin was reduced by topical application of pericarpium castaneae extracts. And the treatment of human skin with the extracts increased the elasticity and moisture of the skin. We investigated the effect of the pericarpium castaneae extracts on production of extracellular matrix using cultured A431 fibroblast cells. The results indicated that the extracts had no detectable effect on collagen synthesis. But synthesis of cell adhesion protein was increased by the extracts. The results suggest that increase of cell adhesion protein synthesis by pericarpium castaneae extracts has closely related to reduction of wrinkle in skin.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of sea cucumber extract on skin as a natural cosmetics functional material. Subjective evaluation of cosmetics before and after were conducted with questionnaires regarding moisture content, sebum content, melanin index, and erythema index. Experiments were conducted on improvement efficacy using skin clinical trials and questionnaires to evaluate changes in perception of skin condition and efficiency of products. With the aim of minimizing skin irritation, the efficiency of the solvent used for extraction was an important factor, and the sea cucumber extract was harvested with efficient extraction conditions at a ratio of 1:10 of 50% ethanol. The study aimed to identify the suitability of sea cucumber extract as a functional cosmetics material to improve the moisturizing ability of skin and its effect on the skin by adding marine natural animal sea cucumber extract. Clinical studies on cosmetics skin containing sea cucumber extract, excellent skin improvement effect from all items of clinical experiment in experimental and control groups. Sea cucumber extract was proved to be a stable, non-adverse physiologically active substance against abnormal symptoms or side effects of skin reactions and skin problems. In addition, the study found excellent results that can lead to its use as a cosmetics material. This is expected to contribute to the development of various cosmetics industries.

Methanol extract (1.0 wt%) of Scutellaria baicalensis George satisfied preservation standard of CTFA (The Cosmetics, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association) against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans and Escherichia coli which were inoculated in skin lotion. Even at a low concentration (0.01 wt%) the extract showed high superoxide dismutase-like activity. The CTFA standard could also be satisfied for the above four strains when methanol extract of Liriope platyphylla were combined with the 1.0 wt% extract of S. baicalensis George. This result suggests that extract of L. platyphylla does not hinder the preservation activity of S. baicalensis George. Moreover, skin moisture content could be maintained for 6 hours after the application of a cream containing the extract of L. platyphylla.

Inner nutshell of Castanea crenata has been used as an anti-aging and anti-wrinkle agent from the ancient time in east Asia. In order to develop new anti-aging and anti-wrinkle, ethanolic extract of inner nutshell of Castanea crenata was prepared and various biological activities were evaluated. Cor-285 possessed potent tree radical scavenging activity in vitro compared to gallic acid. Cor-285 showed the preventive effect against UV-induced cytotoxicity of fibroblast at concentration of 25-250mg/ml. When Cor-285 was evaluated for its anti-allergic activity, it effectively inhibited histamine release from mast cells induced by compound 48/80. The inhibitory activity was stronger than that of glycyrrhizinate. Cor-285 also showed on vivo inhibition against delayed hypersensitivity as well as croton-oil induced ear edema in mice when topically applied. These results strongly suggest that Cor-285 may reduce immunoregulatory/inflammatory skin trouble. From the attempts to isolate the scavenger, were isolated. In a clinical trial of twenty healthy volunteers with aged skin, 6 weeks application of Cor-285 decreased wrinkle about 26% and increased moisturizing 20% on the skin. All of these results indicate that Cor-285 may be an effective anti-aging and anti-wrinkle agent.

The raw materials requiring new technology have been introduced to the market as highly functional cosmetics have been popularized recently. The doublesphere which is the new capsulation is thus born. The deublesphere is double-layered capsulation of which the primary film is the nanocapsulation of liposome and the secondary film is the visible capsulation. The main component of the primary film is lecithin and that of the secondary film is alginlcarrageenanslagarfcellulose. The doublesphere is characterized by that it is possible to keep active beautifying components stable and to improve the moisturizing effect, penetration power into the skin, roughness of the skin, etc. in view of its efficacy and effects since it is double-layered capsulation. The doublesphere-retinol is made in order to measure the stability, efficacy, and effects in the present study.

Liquid crystals offer plenty of useful activities as improving the stability of emulsion, increasing moisturizing power, drug release, improving skin feeling and visual effect for cosmetics fields. In order to prepare stable semi-transparent gel emulsion, liquid crystal emulsification method was used. The emulsion stabilities of systems containing glycerin, fatty alcohols, surfactants, water and oil were investigated at various temperatures as time passed. The stabilities of all emulsions were evaluated by means of a polarizing microscope, SEM, rheometer, colorimeter and DSC. Even though the samples stored at $50^{\circ}C$ thermostatic chamber were occurred the reduction of hardness, turbidity and ${\Delta}H$ and the peak shift, the semi-transparent gel emulsion was very stable without separation between water and oils phase in emulsion.

Toona sinensis (TS) leaf is known to antinociceptive, antioxidative stress and skin moisturizing effects. Acnes vulgaris is a chronic skin disease with various symptoms including itchiness, pain and interruption of normal skin function. Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is a major factor in the occurrence of inflammatory acnes. This study evaluated the antioxidant and anti-inflammation effects by TS extract from adventitious shoots. TS extract showed anti-inflammatory activities by suppression of pro-inflammation mediators (iNOS and COX-2) in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. TS extract also has anti-inflammatory activities by inhibiting the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines on P. acnes-stimulated HaCaT cells. These effects were regulated by MAPK signaling pathway. Therefore, we suggest that TS extract from adventitious shoots might have applications as a medicine for treating P. acnes-induced skin diseases.

더덕은 도라지과 다년생 초본으로 한방에서 진해, 거담 등으로 널리 사용되는 재료이다. 더덕에는 다당류, 페놀성 화합물이 다량 함유되어 있으며 항산화 효과 및 면역력 증가효과가 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 더덕을 유산균을 이용하여 발효 추출 후 화장품 제형에 적용하여 피부의 안전성과 제형 안정성을 평가하였다. 화장품 제제에서 경피의 수분증발량 196%, 경피 수분량 15%, 유분량 131%가 개선되어 인체피부에 보습력을 개선하는 것을 알 수 있었다.
