  • This study was carried out to evaluate the possibility of resource recovery for municipal solid waste(MSW) that sorted by a MBT system. First, physical property of MSW was similar to wastes carried into Sudokown landfill site. However, moisture of MSW was little higher than that. As a result of BMP test using organic fraction of MSW(OFMSWs), approximately 60 ~ 80 mL $CH_4/g$-VS of methane was occurred. Compared to the other studies, the value of methane is lower. It seems to be caused that high ratio of vinyl/plastic in OFMSWs. The other BMP test using sample of MBT system located in Sudokwon landfill was conducted each physical properties. According to the result of experiment, food waste makes 193 mL $CH_4/g$-VS, and paper is 102 mL $CH_4/g$-VS. However, there was not methane production in vinyl and rubber. Additionally, others that can't sort no more show 30 m $CH_4L/g$-VS of methane production. From the result of experimental data OFMSWs has high fraction of vinyl, rubber and other substance that difficult for biodegradation. Therefore it is need to sort of them.

  • These experiments were conducted to investigate the morphological characteristics, occurrence ecology, host preference, and oviposition of Locusta migratoria to create a forecasting manual in preparation for outbreaks of this species. The sex ratio (female:male) of 274 adult of L. migratoria which occurred naturally in the Muan region of Jeollanam-do was 18.2 : 81.8, 60.9% individuals were of the green type and 39.1% were of the brown type. Body length and body weight were 6.5 cm and 2.8 g for females and 5.0 cm and 1.5 g for males, respectively; body size did not differ between differently colored individuals. Spawning activity in the field was observed from late August to late October. Eggs laid between late September and early October hatched in late May the following year. Female adults fed 3.5 g of corn leaf and male adult was 1.6 g for a day. The host preference of L. migratoria was in the order corn > foxtail millet > millet > silver grass > rice, and preference for silver grass and rice was very low. Pure sand was most favorable for the spawning of L. migratoria, and the cumulative amount of hatching was higher when the soil moisture content was higher after spawning began.

  • This study analyzed the major chemical components of raw and dried persimmons (Diospyros kaki Thunb.). Raw and dried persimmons contained (respectively) 85.52% and 47.36% moisture, 0.10% and 0.13% crude fat, 0.30% and 1.89% crude protein, and 0.56% and 2.0% crude fiber. The main free sugar components in both raw and dried persimmons were glucose and fructose. Seventeen amino acids were identified in the dried persimmons, amongst which the dominant ones were aspartic acid, glutamic acid, histidine and arginine. The total amino acid content of raw and dried persimmons was 3,130.76 ppm and 12,849.33 ppm, respectively. The major fatty acids in total lipids were palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid and linolenic acid in both raw and dried persimmons. The raw persimmons had 23.22% palmitoleic acid and 32.70% linolenic acid, suggesting that they have a high ratio of unsaturated fatty acids. The mineral content of both raw and dried persimmons was Na < Fe < Ca < P < K.

  • To evaluate tritium level in some environmental samples, tissue-free water tritium (TFWT) and tissue-bound tritium (TBT) were analyzed in rices, chinese cabbages and pine needles collected at 12 locations in Korea. The TFWT was recovered by freeze-drying of the samples and the TBT was obtained in the form of water by combustion of the dried samples. Tritium was measured by liquid scintillation counter. The concentrations of TFWT were in the range of $0.96{\sim}3.96 Bq/1,\; 0.83{\sim}3.40 Bq/1\;and\;1.02{\sim}3.01 Bq/1$ in rices, chinese cabbages and pine needles, respectively. The mean specific activity ratios (TBT/TFWT) were 0.94, 1.71 and 1.39 in rices, chinese cabbages and pine needles, respectiviely. This excess TBT in the samples may be attributed to the fact that the residence time of TBT in the plant is longer than that of TFWT. The specific activity ratio depends on the plant species, the exposed time to tritiated atmosphere, atmospheric moisture, temperature and diffusion factor.

  • This study was conducted to establish an ideal condition for obtaining maximum extraction efficiencies using an array of soil types and under a wide variety of conditions. Nine characteristic compounds were studied: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene, n-propylbenzene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, and n-butylbenzene which were found in gasoline. Increasing the moisture content resulted in decreased recovery, and recovery of hydrocarbons from wet soils was significantly lower than from dry soils. For the batch extraction process, 4 hours of extraction time was sufficient to give optimum recovery of the contaminants. With methanol as an extraction solvent, maximum recovery time appeared to be reached quicker for BTEX components than with 2-propanol. The 2 to 1 ratio of solvent/soil was chosen as a compromise to provide for the indicated minimum solvent use and high extraction efficiency. The 0.4 mg/g soil contamination was adequate to show quantitative recovery. The percent recovery of BTEX was concentration dependent more than the semivolatile compounds. Methanol and 2-propanol consistently gave higher efficiency than water. Methanol was superior to 2-propanol in removing contaminants from silty clay loam soil. Using the most efficient extraction procedure, the average recovery of the light hydrocarbons from the three soils was 66 percent. Recoveries were also dependent on soil type, solvent type, extraction time, solvent amount, contaminant concentration, and compounds volatility. This study provided a useful screening technique for procedures that can be used to remediate soils contaminated with light hydrocarbons.

  • In this study, sponge cakes were prepared with substitution of 5, 10, 15, and 20% banana powder. The specific gravity and viscosity tended to increase as the ratio of banana powder increased. The foaming stability was highest at the 10% substitution level. The control group had significantly higher moisture content and volume index than the banana powder samples. The crust color values (a, b) decreased significantly with increased content of banana powder, but the a value increased. Crumb colors values (L, b) decreased as banana powder content increased while the a value increased. In terms of textural characteristics, the samples containing 5, 15, and 20% banana powder had significantly higher hardness than the 0 and 10% samples. Fracturability and resilience were maximal with 15% and 5%, respectively. Adhesiveness and chewiness were not significantly different among the samples. In the sensory evaluation, scores for banana flavor, coarseness, color, flavor, softness, and overall acceptability increased as the level of banana powder content increased. Sweetness was not significantly different among the samples. The control group had significantly higher egg-flavor as compared to the samples containing banana powder. The results indicated that substituting 10% banana powder to sponge cake is optimal for quality and provides a product with reasonably high overall acceptability.

  • Leaf fibers have many good properties; they are strong, long, cheap, abundant and bio-degradable. Since they, however, contain a great quantity of non-cellulose components, they have been used for the materials of mats, ropes, bags and nets rather than those of clothing. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of leaf fibers in order to promote the use of leaf fibers for the materials of clothing as well as develop the high value-added textile fibers. Leaf fiber plants including New Zealand Flax, Henequen and Banana plant, which have various nature and shape, were used. New Zealand Flax and Henequen leaves were cut from lower part of plants. Banana leaves and pseudo-stems were peeled and cut from the stem of Banana plants. First, the thin outer skins like film of leaves, veins and stems were removed before retting. The chemical retting had been processed for 1hour, at 100 in 0.4% $H_2SO_4$ aqueous solution(liquid ratio 50:1). Then, the retted leaf fibers had been soaked for 1hour, at room temperature in 0.5% NaClO solution(v/v) to remove the miscellaneous materials. We investigated the physical characteristics of three leaf fibers including the transversal and longitudinal morphology, the contents(%) of pectin, lignin and hemicellulose, the length and diameter of fibers, the tensile strength of the fiber bundles, and the fiber crystallinity and the moisture regain(%). The lengths of fiber from three leaf fibers were similar to their leaf lengths. The fiber bundles were composed of the cellulose paralleled to the fiber axis and the non-cellulose intersecting at right angle with the fiber axis. The diameters of New Zealand Flax, Henequen and Banana fibers were $25.13{\mu}m$, $18.16{\mu}m$ and $14.01{\mu}m$, respectively and their tensile strengths were 19.40 Mpa, 32.16 Mpa and 8.45 Mpa, respective. The non-cellulose contents of three leaf fibers were relatively as high as 40%. If the non-cellulose contents of leaf fibers might be controlled, leaf fibers could be used for the materials of textile fiber, non-wovens and Korean traditional paper, Hanjee.

  • This study has been implemented to investigate various characteristics of coals which are imported from abroad. KIER has developed 1 T/D bench-scale unit, entrained-flow coal-slurry gasification technology to investigate the followings: 1) to assess the appropriate foreign coals for gasification. 2) to establish the data base for gasification phenomena, 3) to minimize the technical risks prior to introduction of commercial scaled IGCC power plant, 4) to develop essential key technologies and to establish operational experiences for coal gasification. The foreign coals used in the gasification are Cyprus and Alaska coals from U. S. A. Cyprus coal(bituminous) and Alaska coal (lignite) were shown about 1.29$0^{\circ}C$. The concentrations of coal-slurry for Cyprus were maintained up to 58%, 62% and 65% in order to enable to feed satisfactorily it into the gasifier without any other problems at feeding systems. However, the Alaska coal was unable to maintain slurry concentration over the 60% due to its high viscosity. During the experiments, $O_2/coal$ ratios in both coals ere maintained from 0.6~1.2, but especially Alaska coal was required excessive oxygen feed due to its high ingerent moisture contents. During the experiments with two different coals, the concentrations of syngas $(H_2+CO)$ were shown as 40~62%, and the heating value of syngas were detected as 1,400~2,050 kcal/N㎥
