  • Gelatinization degrees of torn and waxy corn starches in the low-moisture environment were determined by DSC thermogram and enzymatic analysis, the results were compared each other As the moisture content increased from 20% to 70%, the enthalpy of endothermic peak of starch increased linearly in DSC thermograms. When the moisture content exceeded above 70%, the DSC enthalpy of starch remained constant in DSC thermogram. The enthalpies for gelatinization of corn and waxy corn starches were 3.23 cal/g and 4.2 cal/g, respectively. When gelatinization degrees of starches were measured by enzymatic analysis, the gelatinization degree increased linearly as the moisture content increased from 20% to 80%. A linear correlation between DSC and enzymatic analysis was obtained only when the moisture content was under 70%.

  • This study was executed to test the possibility of replacement for domestic Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis) for hardwoods and to acquire the information about the effects of drying temperature on internal temperature, moisture content and drying defects. In high-temperature drying, internal temperature increased rapidly to boiling point, immediately after that point the internal temperature rising rate was reduced. In the case of drying at temperature of $125^{\circ}C$, internal temperature could reach at boiling point in a very short time. Moisture content in high-temperature drying showed constant drying rate period and first period of falling rate drying together in 4 hours since experiment begun. There was no strong correlation between initial moisture content and final moisture content. Average drying rate at $115^{\circ}C$, $120^{\circ}C$ and $125^{\circ}C$ was 1.42%/hr, 1.88%/hr and 2.02%/hr, respectively; the case of drying temperature of $125^{\circ}C$ showed most rapid drying rate. Drying rate of $125^{\circ}C$ was so rapid that it showed more severe shrinkage, bow, collapse, end check, and internal check development than in other drying conditions. The result of this study showed the strong possibility of high-temperature drying for Japanese larch, and to dry Japanese larch optimally, dry bulb temperature should not exceed $120^{\circ}C$.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess drought tolerance of groundcover plants for extensive green roof. Form July to November 2013, plant height, chlorophyll content, soil moisture, evapotranspiration and survival rate was measured. As results, after unirrigation started, Aster koraiensis reached 0% of soil moisture earliest followed by Sedum kamtschaticum, Hemerocallis fulva, Hylotelephium spectabile, Iris sanguinea, Hosta longipes and control. Among the plants, A. koraiensis withered earliest on 19th day of unirrigation experiment, followed by H. longipes and H. fulva (27th day); and I. sanguinea (29th day). S. kamtschaticum and H. spectabile survived even after 120th day of the experiment. As for chlorophyll content, I. sanguinea showed constant values in early stage than rapidly decreased right before its withering. Chlorophyll content of A. koraiensis and H. fulva showed rapid decrease from the beginning, while that of H. spectabile and S. kamtschaticum showed continuous reduction for first 30 days and the reduction was slowed down since then. In conclusion, H. longipes, I. sanguinea and H. fulva were found most applicable for extensive green roof considering scenic aspect.

  • This study was to investigate the effect of .compressive load and cyclic humidity(2$0^{\circ}C$, 65% and 90% RH) on the physical and mechanical properties of corrugated board. Corrugated boards in the study were under compressive load and under cyclic humidity, and their properties were compared to those without load. Results were summarized as follows ; 1 Statistically significant correlation was shown between the ring crush of the boards and the compressive strength of cylinder specimen made from the boards. So we could study the compressive behavior of board with cylinder specimen. 2. The boards under the compressive load increased their moisture content and thickness much more than those without load both in constant and in cyclic RH. 3. The compressive and tensile strength of board samples were inversely and closely proportional to the sheet moisture content regardless of their load and humidity history. 4. The moisture content did not show any significant proportionality to the change of burst strength of boards within this experiment. 5. Board reconditioning in standard condition led to the recovery of the strength loss that had occurred under various load and humidity condition. 6. The handsheets prepared from the boards that had experienced compressive load and cyclic humidity, and those with no-load and 65% RH did not show any significant difference in strength properties. No physical damage or load-carrying properties of the wood fiber were observed by the compressive load and cyclic humidity history.

  • In tradition, there have been two kinds of drying methods, which are sun drying and artificial drying. The sun drying method which has been adopted traditionally has been replaced by the hot-air drying method which is one of the most general methods of artificial drying, with its simple drying system, low initial cost of drying plant, and easy operating method. But the hot-air drying method has some defects ; (1)much energy loss happens due to the discharge of hot air during the drying process, (2)control of drying rate is not easy on account of changing relative humidity of inlet air for uniform hot air temperature, (3)high temperature of floods in drying process brings about the production of low-grade drying products. Also, the hot-air drying method is inducing environmental and sanitary problems which are resulting from the emission of high temperature and high humidity air, including stick on the drying progress. Vacuum drying technique, whose drying time and 7uantity of exhausting energy is about 1/3 ~1/4 of hot air drying, is very excellent in the drying efficiency. As the results, it took about 20 hours for material to reach about 18% of the final moisture content in order to store products for a long time, from about 470% of the early moisture content at the beginning of drying, and maximum drying rate comes to about $0.35 kg/m^2hr$ at about 350% of the moisture content.

  • The unit-water content has a very significant effect on the durability of the construction structure and the quality of concrete. Although there are various methods for measuring the unit-water content, there are problems of time required for measurement, precision, and reproducibility. Recently, there is an FDR sensor capable of measuring moisture content in real time through an apparent dielectric constant change of electromagnetic waves. In addition, various artificial intelligence techniques that can non-linearly supplement the accuracy of FDR sensors are being studied. In this study, the accuracy of unit-water content measurement was compared and evaluated using machine learning and deep learning techniques after normalizing the data secured in concrete using frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) sensors used to measure soil moisture at home and abroad. The result of comparing the accuracy of machine learning and deep learning is judged to be excellent in the accuracy of deep learning, which can well express the nonlinear relationship between FDR sensor data and concrete unit-water content.

  • The osmotic blistering behavior of polymeric coating film which is in contact with an aqueous environment has been investigated. In this study, the coating film has been assumed to be linearly viscoelastic. Interfacial stresses induced in a laminate model consisting of the viscoelastic film and the elastic substrate as the film absorbs moisture from the ambient environment have been investigated using the time-domain boundary element method. The overall stress intensity factor for interfacial cracks subjected to a uniform osmotic pressure has been computed using the tractions at the crack tip node. The magnitude of stress intensity factors decreases with time due to viscoelastic relaxation, but remains constant at large times.

  • When plate anchors are embedded in soft clay, they may undergo a deformation under the pressure of sustained load. The critical depth at which the transition from a shallow to a deep anchor takes place depends on the properties of soil. Laboratory model tests were performed for the short-term net ultimate uplift capacity of a circular anchors with respect to various embedment depths and moisture content in saturated kaolinite. The tests have been conducted with the anchor at two different moisture contents. Based on the model test results, empirical relationships between the net load, rate of strain, and time have been developed. In creep tests of kaolinite for load versus ultimate uplift capacity, the displacement of plate anchors rapidly increases during the primary stage but thereafter becomes constant over a period of time.

  • We studied the possibility that an air capacitor can be used as a humidity sensor by measuring capacitance change. In order to investigate the possibility, the change of capacitance of an air capacitor due to moisture in air was first considered theoretically, and was then experimentally verified. The capacitance was measured by an LCR impedance meter with a 100-kHz and 1-V ac. The results revealed that the changes in the experimentally measured capacitances were greater than those in the theoretically calculated values. Based on this fact, we knew that an air capacitor could be used as part of a humidity sensing device. We expect the humidity sensor with an air capacitor has characteristics of fast response time, high reliability, and high durability compared with other conventional methods.

  • This study focused on the production of high quality compost for the growth of aero-thermophilic fungi, which has a promoting effect on the growth rate and production of oyster mushrooms. The automated solid-state bioreactor system was designed on the basis of a Three-Phase-One system, which controls the serial steps of prewetting, pasteurization and fermentation processes. High numbers of thermophilic fungi and bacteria were recovered from the mushroom composts prepared by this solid-state bioreactor. The rates of composting process were depended on physical as well as chemical factors. Among these factors, the parameters of moisture content and temperature were found to be particularly important. In our automated system, constant levels of moisture content, temperature and ventilation via mixing were provided by a centralized control apparatus including PLC, water tank and water jacket systems. These features induced higher microbiological activity of aero-thermophiles.
