  • As a consecutive work on stability for the quality of ginseng products, the sorption properties of red ginseng (RG), red ginseng powder (RGP), and red ginseng powder tablet (RGPT) were studied in order to set the optimum moisture level for them. The levels of moisture at BET monolayer of RGP and RGPT ranged 5.97 to 7.27 % and 4.73 to 5.14 % in wet basis, respectively. Based on these values, the optimum moisture content for both of them would preferably be set at $6.7{\pm}0.7%$ and $4.9{\pm}0.2%$. From the results of storage study on microorganism growth under the maltreated condition, $40^{\circ}C$, and 75% RH, the optimum level of moisture for RG could be extended up to $14.0{\pm}0.5%$, which is much higher than the circulating values of 10.416%.

  • The application of livestock manure to cropland is a practice that has been used for centuries. Agricultural crops can utilize nutrients from manure, and the producer can utilize land for disposal, although in a "sustainable system" the concept is manure utilization and not waste disposal. However, meeting regulatory criteria regarding microbial quality remains an expensive and time consuming process. The purpose of this study was to quantify the level of environmental impact of soil moisture and temperature on fecal coliform (Escherichia coli or E. coli) survival in upland soils for sound application of livestock manure. Samples were collected up to 30 days depending on the given conditions. The inactivation rate of E. coli increased linearly with increased temperature while the inactivation rate gradually decreased with decreased soil moisture level. The overall findings of this study showed that the temperature was the limited factor on E. coli survival in soils over soil moisture content. This study will provide useful and practical guidelines to applicators of soil in deciding appropriate handling and time frames for land application for sustainable agriculture.

  • Accurate and optimal water supply to cereal crop is critical in growing stalks and producing maximum yields. Recently, upland crops are cultivated in paddy field soils to reduce overproduced rice in Korea. In order to increase productivity of cereal crops in paddy fields which have poor percolation and drainage properties, it is necessary to fully understand crop response to excessive soil water condition and management of soil drainage system in paddy field. The objectives of this study were to investigate effects of excessive soil water to sesame growth and to quantify stress response using groundwater levels. Two cultivars of sesame were selected to investigate; Gunbak and Areum. These sesames were planted in paddy fields located in Miryang, Gyeongnam with different soil drainage levels and drainage systems. The experiment site was divided into two plots by drainage class; very poorly and somewhat poorly drained. Two different drainage systems were applied to alleviate excessive soil water in each plot: open ditch and pipe drainage system. Soil water contents and groundwater levels were measured every hour during growing season. Pipe drainage system was significantly effective to alleviate wet injury for sesame in paddy fields. Pipe drainage system decreased average soil moisture content and groundwater level during sesame cultivation. This resulted in greater yield and lignan contetns in sesame seeds than ones from open ditch system. Comparison between two cultivars, Gunbak had greater decrease in growth and yield by excessive soil water and high groundwater level than Areum. Seed components (lignan) showed decrease in seeds as soil water increased. When soil moisture content was greater than 40%, lignan content tended to decrease than ones from less soil moisture content. Based on these results, pipe drainage system would be more effective to reduce wet injury to sesame and increase lignan component in paddy field cultivation.

  • PURPOSES : The hydrated lime-modified asphalt, which improves moisture resistance, is normally used for pavements to reduce the number of potholes. However, the method of applying the material properties of the lime-modified asphalt mixture for use in pavements is not covered in the Korean Pavement Research Program (KPRP). The objective of this research is to find a method for the design application of lime-modified asphalt's material properties to the KPRP. METHODS: The section for test design is selected in some conditions which are related to the level of design regarding Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT). To define the application methods of hydrated lime in the KPRP, the models of fatigue, rut and international roughness index (IRI) are determined based on the M-EPDG test results from some earlier research results. Moreover, it is well known that dynamic moduli of the unmodified mixture are not different from those of the lime-modified mixture. RESULTS: The performance results of hydrated lime-modified asphalt pavement were not very much different from those of the unmodified pavement, which meant the limited design regulations regarding fatigue failure, rutting deformation and IRI. CONCLUSIONS: The KPRP uses the weather model from the data for previous 10 years. It implies that the KPRP cannot predict abnormal climate changes accurately. Hence, the predictive weather data regarding the abnormal climate changes are unreliable. Secondly, the KPRP cannot apply the moisture resistance of asphalt mixtures. Therefore, a second level of design study will have to be performed to reflect the influence of moisture. It means that the influence on pavement performance can be changed by the application of hydrated lime in asphalt mixture design.

  • The paper describes the rainfall-runoff. soil moisture distribution and subsurface flow of 'U-shaped Goll' valley head slope to evaluate quantitatively the interaction between the water circulation system and geomorphic development. The findings are as follows: The fissure and the pipe entrance in front of 'U-shaped Goll' introduce a lot of direct runoff into either the soil pipe or the soil layer to accelerate the erosion of the soil layer, so that they are likely to contribute to the expansion and development of the soil pipe. Most of soil water is to be drained in pipe flow, while some of remaining soil water is to be fed into groundwater. Therefore, low rainfall intensity is thought to let both the groundwater level and the pipe flow react sensitively by the effects of the precedent rainfall even at events: As a result, the soil pipe is said to be an important factor having influence upon the material balance of 'U-shaped Goll' valley head slope. On the other hand, the groundwater shows greater specific flux at the top than at the bottom, and relatively larger specific flux is applied to the top to make 'U-shaped Goll' valley head slope go back to the top.

  • The use of Self-Leveling material is increasing recently. This paper assesses the quality of surface layer of concrete floor when Self-Leveling material is defective. The paper shows how to predict the defect of SL material before construction begins. The relationship between the quality of surface layer of concrete floor and the defect of SL material was determined and the quality of surface layer of concrete floor was then estimated. The relations between the quality of surface layer and the defect of SL material were determine considering surface strength, moisture, and consistency of surface layer. Absorbing amount was used as the indicator of consistency and the absorbing amount of test material was measured. Then the relations between the test material and surface strength were determined. Generally concrete floor with greater consistency has greater surface strength, however in this study, we hound that high impact concrete floor could have lower surface strength as the consistency gets bigger. The relations between the level of defect occurred in SL material and the quality of surface layer were examined and we clarified that the surface layer with lower consistency gets higher possibility to occur exfoliation in early stage, one or two weeks after constructing SL material. When the consistency is sufficient, the occurring situation of defect depends upon the moisture of surface layer. Little amount of moisture gets higher possibility not to occur the defect. As the amount increases, fissure generates and early exfoliation may occur. In addition, the level of fissure is highly related with the surface strength.

  • This study was conducted to compare the contents of preservatives and general composition on four different types of cheese to provide useful data and information to the consumer. We analyzed preservatives (sorbic acid, benzoic acid, dehydroacetic acid, methyl p-hydroxy benzoate, ethyl p-hydroxy benzoate, propionic acid) and general composition (moisture, protein, fat) from total 102 cheeses which are 46 sliced cheeses, 22 string cheeses, 20 cream cheeses and 14 pizza cheeses. Preservatives were detected from total 14 samples, which are suitable for the authorized limits in Korea. Sorbic acid was detected from 13 samples (197.3~1,736.1 mg/kg) and propionic acid was detected from 1 sample (362.7 mg/kg). Considering from each type of cheese, cream cheese showed the high detection rate (60%); 12 samples of cream cheese contained sorbic acid. The moisture, protein and fat contents of cheeses were in the ranges of 44.3~56.8%, 7.2~24.6% and 19.6~26.8%. Cream cheese had the highest level of moisture (56.8%) and fat (26.8%), but protein level is very low (7.2%).

  • This study examined the physiochemical and organoleptic properties of the yanggaeng fabricated with different contents of ginger powder. The moisture contents ranged between 39.85% and 47.92%. The yanggaeng made with 0.5 g of ginger powder showed the lowest moisture content of 37.04%, whereas the yanggaeng made with 1.5 g of ginger powder showed the highest moisture content of 47.92%. As for the L value, which indicates lightuess, the yanggaeng made with 1.5 g of ginger powder showed a L value of 13.92, whereas the yanggaeng made with 0.5 g showed the lowest L value of 12.35, (p<0.05). The values for redness (a value) ranged between 4.69 and 5.58, and there was no significant difference as the content of ginger powder increased. The value for yellowness, (b value) ranged between 3.19 and 2.33, and showed a significant decreasing trend as the ginger powder content increased (p<0.05). The sugar concentrations were 53.82~46.56, and decreased as the ginger content increased. The pH ranged between 6.42~6.52, and showed significant differences. As the ginger content increased, changes in hardness, adhesiveness, gumminess, and chewiness, were all significant (p<0.05). Characteristics of cohesiveness and springiness, showed no significant differences. Although there were no significant differences in color, flavor, chewiness, and hardness, there was a decreasing flavor preference as the content of ginger powder increased. There were significant differences in sweetness, moistness, and overall-preference (p<0.05). For overall-preference, the yanggaeng with 1.0 g of added ginger powder showed a high preference level. The study results implied that ginger powder may be used in fabricating yanggaeng. and a 0.5% content of added ginger powder will improve the preference level.

  • This study focused on the characteristics of change soil water with respect to soil thickness and soil mixture ratio, in order to effectively carry out an afforestation system for a roof with a low level of management and a light weight. Soil hardness tended to increase as sand particle was increase regardless soil thickness and soil porosity had more higher artificial soil than natural soil mixture. In case of soil pH, natural soil mixture had between 6.7 and 7.4, and artificial soil mixture had 6.0~6.8. Organic matter, electrical conductance and exchangeable content were highest in $L_{10}$, which it had the highest leafmold ratio. Soil moisture tension(kPa) in 15cm soil thickness was observed natural soil mixture had a considerable change but artificial soil mixture had a gradual change when non-rainfall kept on. In the experimental $L_{10}$, $S_{10}$, $S_7L_3$ and $S_5L_5$ object, the amount of moisture tended to rapidly decrease. However, in the experimental $P_7P_1L_2$, $P_6P_2L_2$, $P_5P_3L_2$ and $P_4P_4L_2$ objects, which contained pearlite and peat moss, the amount of moisture tended to gradually decrease. As a result, the use of a artificial soil mixture soil seems to be required for the afforestation of a roof for a low level of management.

  • Seawater adaptability of steelhead trout increases along with the increase in the size of the fish, independent of parr-smolt transformation. Three 96 h seawater challenge tests were conducted to determine the size at which seawater adaptability of steelhead trout develops. Plasma Na+ and Cl- levels, moisture content, gill Na+/K+ ATPase activity, and mortality during the 96 h after direct transfer to seawater (32 ppt) were determined. Plasma Na+ and Cl- levels in 50 g fish continuously increased during the 96 h after the transfer to seawater (p<0.05), but the levels in 100 and 150 g fish leveled off after 24 h (p<0.05). Both 100 and 150 g size steelhead trout maintained muscle moisture content (%) better than 50 g size fish (p<0.05). Gill Na+/K+ ATPase activity in the 100 g size group increased in a time-dependent manner after transfer to seawater (p<0.05), whereas activity in the 50 and 150 g sizes did not increase (p>0.05), for which a possible explanation was discussed. A mere 2.6% mortality in both the 50 and 150 g size groups was observed. In conclusion, the current results indicate that 50 g size steelhead trout did not show development of a high level of hypoosmoregulatory capacity, whereas fish in the 100 and 150 g size groups showed a high level in our experimental conditions. Therefore, the steelhead trout larger than a 100 g size is recommended for transfer to seawater culture.
