This study compared moisture content measured by moisture meter of microwave resistance type(MMMRT) and standard moisture content of paddy, and developed the correction equation using linear and curvilinear regression analysis, and to explore its significance test. The correction factor according to the range of moisture content was developed to improve the measurement precision of MMMRT. The results were as followings. The coefficients of determination of correction equation by linear and curvilinear regression analysis with comparing the MMMRT and standard moisture content were 0.946 and 0.968, respectively. The moisture content error of MMMRT and standard moisture content measured after the MMMRT were corrected by moisture content rate of every 5% using the correction equation by curvilinear regression analysis appeared with 0~0.5% and 0.9~1.8% respectively in the moisture content range of 15~20% and 20~25%.

This study was conducted to measure the moisture content of powdered food using RF impedance spectroscopic method. In frequency range of 1.0 to 30㎒, the impedance such as reactance and resistance of parallel plate type sample holder filled with wheat flour and red-pepper powder of which moisture content range were 5.93∼-17.07%w.b. and 10.87 ∼ 27.36%w.b., respectively, was characterized using by Q-meter (HP4342). The reactance was a better parameter than the resistance in estimating the moisture density defined as product of moisture content and bulk density which was used to eliminate the effect of bulk density on RF spectral data in this study. Multivariate data analyses such as principal component regression, partial least square regression and multiple linear regression were performed to develop one calibration model having moisture density and reactance spectral data as parameters for determination of moisture content of both wheat flour and red-pepper powder. The best regression model was one by the multiple linear regression model. Its performance for unknown data of powdered food was showed that the bias, standard error of prediction and determination coefficient are 0.179% moisture content, 1.679% moisture content and 0.8849, respectively.

Soil moisture is a important factor in hydrologic analysis. So, if we have spatially distributed soil moisture data, it can help to study much research in a various field. Recently, there are a lot of satellite derived soil moisture data, and it can be served through web freely. Especially, NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) launched the Soil Moisture Aperture Passive (SMAP) satellite for mapping global soil moisture on 31 January 2015. SMAP data have many advantages for study, for example, SMAP data has higher spatial resolution than other satellited derived data. However, becuase many satellited derived soil moisture data have a limitation to data accuracy, if we have ancillary materials for improving data accuracy, it can be used. So, in this study, after applying the alogorithm, which is data assimilation methods, applicability of satellite derived soil moisture data was analyzed. Among the various data assimilation methods, in this study, Model Output Statistics (MOS) technique was used for improving satellite derived soil moisture data. Model Output Statistics (MOS) is a type of statistical post-processing, a class of techniques used to improve numerical weather models' ability to forecast by relating model outputs to observational or additional model data.
In this study, the moisture absorption and desorption properties presented by the Health-Friendly Housing Construction Standards of South Korea were compared using the wood of three tree species (Douglas-fir, Hinoki, Larch) and two types of wood-based materials(Plywood, WML BoardⓇ). The national standards for functional building materials present that the amounts of moisture absorption and desorption should be at least 65g/㎡ on average, respectively according to the test method under KS F 2611:2009. Therefore, in this study, the moisture absorption/desorption properties of materials with no treatment (Control), with punching, and with surface stain finishing and the moisture absorption/desorption property improvement effects of the treatments were compared and analyzed. According to the results of this study, it was evaluated that all five types of wood and wood-based materials tested did not satisfy the amount of moisture absorption/desorption of at least 65g/㎡, which is the performance standard for moisture absorption/desorption functional building materials, indicating that untreated wood and wood-based materials cannot be applied as functional finishing materials according to the Health-Friendly Housing Construction Standards. The surface stain finishing greatly reduced the moisture absorption and desorption rates of the materials, and the amounts of moisture absorbed and desorbed were also shown to decrease by at least two times on average. When the surfaces of the materials were punched with Ø4mm holes at intervals of 20 mm, the moisture absorption/desorption areas increased from 18% to 51%, and this increase was shown to be capable of increasing the amounts of moisture absorbed/desorbed by 29% on average at the minimum, and 81% on average at the maximum. The effects of punching were shown to be identical even in cases where the materials were stain finished. For the application of wood or wood-based materials as eco-friendly, health-friendly, and moisture absorption/desorption functional building materials hereafter, it is judged that new physical and chemical improvement studies should be conducted, and treatment methods should be developed.

Water for crop growth were supplied by irrigation in protected cultivation and these are accumulated in the soil and utilized for crop evapotranspiration. The study for analyzing soil moisture characteristics is necessary for adequate irrigation water and soil water management in protected cultivation. Soil moisture content, irrigation water quantity and meteorological data were monitored to analyze soil moisture increment and extraction characteristics in terms of soil layers and cucumber crop growth stages. In first cropping period, the total amount of irrigation water was 5.07 mm/day, soil moisture increment was 4.82 mm/day and soil moisture extraction was 5.56 mm/day. In second cropping period, the total amount of irrigation water was 4.82 mm/day, soil moisture increment was 4.65 mm/day and soil moisture extraction was 4.73 mm/day. Soil moisture extraction rate from 0 to 75 cm is 90.3 % in first cropping period and 79.1 % in second cropping period. The majority irrigation water were consumed in root zone, however, about 15 % of soil moisture were losses by infiltration in lower soil layer. Soil moisture extraction and extraction pattern of cucumber crop calculated in this study can be utilized as a basic data for irrigation water management in protected cultivation.

In this study, we evaluated daily root zone soil moisture dynamics and agricultural drought using a near-surface soil moisture data assimilation scheme with Soil Moisture Active & Passive (SMAP, $3km{\times}3km$) soil moisture footprints under different hydro-climate conditions. Satellite-based LANDSAT and MODIS image footprints were converted to spatially-distributed soil moisture estimates based on the regression model, and the converted soil moisture distributions were used for assessing uncertainties and applicability of SMAP data at fields. In order to overcome drawbacks of the discontinuity of SMAP data at the spatio-temporal scales, the data assimilation was applied to SMAP for estimating daily soil moisture dynamics at the spatial domain. Then, daily soil moisture values were used to estimate weekly agricultural drought based on the Soil Moisture Deficit Index (SMDI). The Yongdam-dam and Soyan river-dam watersheds were selected for validating our proposed approach. As a results, the MODIS/SMAP soil moisture values were relatively overestimated compared to those of the TDR-based measurements and LANDSAT data. When we applied the data assimilation scheme to SMAP, uncertainties were highly reduced compared to the TDR measurements. The estimated daily root zone soil moisture dynamics and agricultural drought from SMAP showed the variability at the sptio-temporal scales indicating that soil moisture values are influenced by not only the precipitation, but also the land surface characteristics. These findings can be useful for establishing efficient water management plans in hydrology and agricultural drought.
In this study, land surface model was used to simulate the soil moisture of South and North Korea for the past 30 years, and the difference in their variation was analyzed. In addition, satellite observed soil moisture data provided by Soil Moisture CCI was analyzed to evaluate the simulation results of VIC model. For the comparison between the simulated and observed data, the CSEOF analysis was applied to indirectly assess the performance of the VIC model rather than simply comparing soil moisture values. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the annual variability of soil moisture showed a similar tendency in both South and North Korea, but it was found that the soil moisture in South Korea was as high as 1%, up to 7%, higher than the soil moisture in North Korea. Secondly, the soil moisture in spring between April to June is similar in South and North Korea, whereas the soil moisture after the rainy season is up to 40% in South Korea, but remains at maximum 32% in North Korea. Third, the overall simulated soil moisture is about 4% smaller than the satellite observed soil moisture, but the degree of increase over the past 30 years is similar to that of satellite observed soil moisture. Finally, a comparison of the CSEOF from the satellite observed soil moisture and the VIC model derived soil moisture showed that the soil moisture from April to June shows a much different pattern from each other. However, in July and October, there was a slight similarity, and it was confirmed that August and September has quite similar patterns.
The film coated snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) seeds with five different coating materials treated with 3% increase in seed weight were planted at sandy loam soil controlled moisture content of 18, 19, 20 and 21 %. The oxygen diffusion rate (ODR) was calculated from the different moisture content soil. The number of normal seedlings, seedling vigor, and seedling capability in field (seed vigor x dry matter weight) were observed at 9 days after planting and compared to the changes of ODR. The germination rate and ODR were sharply decreased simultaneously in the seeds planted at 21 % soil moisture content. Seedling emergence did not occur at all as the soil moisture content increased above 22 %. Hence this value should be considered as the threshold of soil moisture content for seedling emergence. An ODR value under 20% did not influence the percent emergence significantly. The certain difference observing in the emergence at the same ODR was not related clearly to the condition of soil. So it can be assumed that the limit of soil moisture content for the emergence of snap bean was approximately 20%. The value of 18% soil moisture content may be considered as the optimum for snap bean emergence. There was close relationship between the mean value of ODR in different soil moisture contents and the emergence. The germination rates of the seeds coated with the different materials were quite different when the seeds were planted at 21 % soil moisture. Dry weight of the seedlings from film coated seeds was decreased slightly, but the germination rates were not much different from the non-treated control under relatively higher soil moisture content (21 %). Major factor lowering emergence rate was oxygen stress while film coating act as a minor constraint for snap bean sown in excess soil moisture condition.
Milling the rice with low moisture requires more energy, produces more cracked rice, and results in reducing taste of cooked rice. Accordingly, it is necessary to add moisture to the rice with low moisture to obtain optimum moisture level for milling and taste of rice. This study was performed to evaluate the influence of initial moisture content and absorption rate on rice crack, milling energy and whiteness of milled rice and to obtain the information for design of rewetting system mounted on stirring device in grain bin. The tests were conducted for the four levels of initial moisture content in the range of 11.4 to 14.5%(w.b.) and six levels of absorption rate in the range of 0.04 to 1.0%, w.b./hr. In the case of lower moisture content below 12%(w.b.), crack ratios of brown rice were remarkably high regardless of initial moisture contents. Therefore, it was found that rough rice below 12%(w.b.) in initial moisture content could not rewetted by spraying water without crack generation of low level. Absorption rate must be below 0.3%, w.b./hr to maintain crack ratio increase of less than 1% regardless of initial moisture contents. In the case of allowable crack ratio increase of 2% and 5%, it was found that the maximum absorprion rate was respectively 0.6%, w.b./hr and 1.0%, w.b./hr in the initial moisture content of above 13.5%(w.b.). Rewetting the rough rice in moisture content of 11.4 to 14.5%(w.b.) to 14.3 to 16.9%(w.b.) decreased milling energy consumption by 15.9 to 22.3%. The effect of energy saving was higher in the samples of higher initial moisture content. Whiteness of milled rice was decreased by 0.5 to 1.5.
The goal of this research was to an optimum conditions for the brown rice conditioning from data of milling characteristics after conditioning of the brown rice. The range of the initial moisture content of the sample was 13%, 14%, and 15%, the range of the increment of the moisture content was 0.4% and 0.8% with respect to the initial moisture content, and a ripe time after conditioning was eight hours. The results obtained from this research can be summarized as fellows. 1 The crack ratio after conditioning the brown rice with the initial moisture content was increased as the initial moisture content decreased and increment of the moisture content increased. The crack ratio of the milled rice was increased than that of the non-conditioned brown rice and decreased with the conditioned brown rice with the increment of the moisture content of 0.4% and 0.5%. 2. The broken rice ratio after conditioning the brown rice with the initial moisture content was a little higher than that of the non-conditioned brawn rice. The broken ratio of the conditioned brown rice with the increment of the moisture content of 0.4% was increased around 0.2∼0.4% with respect to the non-conditioned brown riced and the broken ratio of the brown rice was high with increased amount of water sprayed during conditioning process. 3. The moisture content of the milled rice after conditioning the brown rice with the initial moisture content increased around 0.3∼0.8% with respect to the non-conditioned milled rice. 4. The electric energy consumption on milling process with the conditioned brown rice by the initial moisture content was decreased 3.4∼39.1% with respect to the non-conditioned brown rice.
