  • Calculating the distribution of stresses and displacements around a circular tunnel excavated in infinite isotropic rock mass subjected to hydrostatic stress condition is one of the basic problems in rock engineering. While closed-form solutions for the distribution are known if rock masses are considered as elastic, perfectly plastic, or brittle-plastic media, a few numerically approximated solutions based on various simplifying assumptions have been reported for strain-softening rock mass. In this study, a simple numerical method is introduced for the analysis of strain-softening behavior of the circular tunnel in Mohr-Coulomb rock mass. The method can also applied to the analysis of the tunnel in brittle-plastic or perfectly plastic media. For the brittle-plastic case where closed-formsolution exists, the performance of the present method is verified by showing an excellent agreement between two solutions. In order to demonstrate the strain-softening behaviors predicted by the proposed method. a parameter study for a softening index is given and the construction of ground reaction curves is carried out. The importance of defining the characteristics of dilation in plastic analysis is discussed through analyzing the displacements near the surface of tunnel.

  • This study focuses on the numerical simulations of the cone penetration tests in a sand ground. The mechanical responses of sand were described using the modified Mohr Coulomb plasticity model based on the critical state soil mechanics. In the plasticity model, the dilatancy angle was not a constant, but a function of the distance to the critical state line from the current state of void ratio and mean effective stress. To simulate cone penetration tests numerically, this study relied on Lagrangian finite element method under the axisymmetric condition. To enable penetration of the cone penetrometer without tearing elements along the symmetric axis, the penetration guide concept was adopted in this study. The results of numerical simulations on the calibration chamber cone penetration tests had good agreement with the experimental results.

  • Friction angle and cohesion of rock masses can be estimated from Hoek and Brown failure criterion and then plastic corrections can be applied using Mohr-Coulomb yield function. This study finds that this estimation procedure would not be appropriate for weak rock masses and for cases where low confining stress is expected to develop. A procedure is outlined in this paper for estimating plastic corrections directly from Hoek and Brown material model. Comparative study shows that direct procedure would simulate non-linear failure surface better than indirect procedure especially in the low confining stress regime.

  • Several damages due to large displacement caused by liquefaction have been reported increasingly. Numerical procedures based on effective stress analysis are therefore necessary to predict liquefaction-induced deformation. In this paper, the fully coupled effective stress model called UBCSAND is proposed to simulate pore pressure rise due to earthquake or repeated loadings. The proposed model is a modification of the simple perfect elasto-plactic Mohr-Coulomb model, and can simulate a continuous yielding by mobilizing friction and dilation angles below failure state. Yield function is defined as the ratio of shear stress to mean normal stress. It is radial lines on stress space and has the same shape of Mohr-Columob failure envelope. Plastic hardening is based on an isotropic and kinematic hardening rule. The proposed model always causes plastic deformation during loading and reloading but it predicts elastic unloading. It is verified by capturing direct simple shear tests on loose Fraser River sand.

  • A new concept of ammunition without the use of explosive gunpowder has been recently studied, which achieves performance equal to or higher than that of high explosives. Frangible Armor Piercing (FAP) is one of the concepts, which utilizes a tungsten alloy penetrator specialized for fragmentation. To investigate the fracture behavior of the tungsten alloy penetrator, Taylor impact tests were conducted at various impact velocities. Additionally, finite element analysis was performed to predict the fracture behavior of the tungsten alloy. Compression tests were also carried out at six strain rates for dynamic material properties and the dynamic hardening behavior was successfully predicted with the Lim-Huh model. Finally, the Mohr-Coulomb fracture model based on the mean stress was adopted to predict impact failure in Taylor impact simulation. The analysis predicts the deformation and fracture behaviors of the tungsten alloy successfully.

  • Polymeric foams are excellent energy absorber and have found a wide range of applications especially in the automotive industry. The purpose of the present study is to develop experimental and theoretical methodology to characterize the pressure dependent yield behavior of polymeric foams. For the compression test in a triaxial stress sate a specially designed device was placed in a press machine to produce and control oil pressure. From the experiment results it was observed that the size of Mother circles is changed with mean normal stress in contrast to general metal. Then the Coulomb-Mohr criterion was applied to the data.

  • Finite element or difference methods are applied to the analysis of the tunnel stability and they provide detailed behaviour of analyzed tunnel sections but it is rather inefficient to analyze all the section of tunnel by using these methods. In this study, the authors suggest a new stability analysis method for whole tunnel to provide an efficient and easy way to understand the behaviour of whole tunnel by using an analytical solution with the assumption of equivalent circular tunnel. The mechanical behaviour, radial strain and plastic zone radius of whole tunnel were analyzed and appropriate support pressure to maintain the displacement within the allowable limit was suggested after the application of this method to the tunnel. Consequently, it was confirmed that this method can provide quick analysis of the whole tunnel stability and the quantitative information for subsequent measures such as selection of tunnel sections for detailed numerical analysis, set up of the monitoring plan, and so on.

  • This paper proposes an elasto-plastic finite difference method which is useful for the stability evaluation of concrete lining installed in a deep circular tunnel. Mohr-Coulomb criterion is assumed for the condition of yielding in both the rock mass and concrete lining. In order to take into account the installation delay of lining after the excavation, the outer boundary pressure acting on the lining was calculated with the consideration of the convergence occurred before the lining installation. The distributions of stress and displacement in the rock mass and lining were calculated based on the method proposed Lee & Pietruszczak (2008). The applicability of the proposed method was demonstrated by conducting the elasto-plastic analysis of concrete lining supporting an imaginary compressed air storage tunnel. The analysis result revealed that the exact determination of the boundary pressures acting on the concrete lining is of importance in the stability analysis of concrete lining.

  • Various numerical analysis models can be used to evaluate the behavior characteristics of tunnel facilities which are representative underground structures. In general, the Mohr-Coulomb model, which is most often used for numerical analysis, is an elastic-perfect plastic behavior model. And the deformation characteristics are the same during the load increase-load reduction phase. So there is a problem that the displacement may appear different from the field situation in the case of excavation analysis. In contrast, the HS-small strain stability model has a wide range of applications for each ground. And it is known that soil deformation characteristics can be analyzed according to field conditions by enabling input of initial elastic modulus and nonlinear curve parameter and so on. However, civil engineers are having difficulty using nonlinear models that can apply material nonlinear properties due to difficulties in estimating ground property coefficients. In this study, the necessity of rational model selection was reviewed by comparing the results of seismic performance evaluation using the Mohr-Coulomb model, which civil engineers generally apply for numerical analysis of tunnels, and the HS Small strain Stiffness model, which can consider ground nonlinearity.
