  • The objective of this study was to establish technology for removing bacteria with human- and eco-friendly material. Staphylococcus aureus as an important component for balanced equilibrium among microbiomes, was cultured under various concentrations of phosphate. Experimental observation relating to physical properties was performed in an addition of phosphate buffer. Statistically minimum value of size and hardness using atomic force microscope was observed on the matured biofilm at 5 mM concentration of phosphate. As a result of absorbance for the biofilm tagged with dye, concentration of biofilm was reduced with phophate, too. To identify whether this reduction by phosphate at the 5 mM is caused by counter ion or not, sodium chloride was treated to the biofilm under the same condition. To elucidate components of the biofilm counting analysis of the biofilm using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry was employed. The secondary ions from the biofilm revealed that alteration of physical properties is consistent to the change of extracellular polymeric substrate (EPS) for the biofilm. Viscoelastic characterization of the biofilm using a controlled shear stress rheometer, where internal change of physical properties could be detected, exhibited a static viscosity and a reduction of elastic modulus at the 5 mM concentration of phosphate. Accordingly, bacteria at the 5 mM concentration of phosphate are attributed to removing the EPS through a reduction of elastic modulus for bacteria. We suggest that the reduction of concentration of biofilm induces dispersion which assists to easily spread its dormitory. In conclusion, it is elucidated that an addition of phosphate causes removal of EPS, and that causes a function of antibiotic.

  • This paper deals with the performance comparison of blind adaptive equalization algorithm, the MMA and S-MMA, that is used for compensation of the amplitude and phase distortion simultaneously which occurs in the time dispersive channel. The present CMA algorithm is possible to compensates the amplitude only, but not in phase, so it needs to the another additional circuit for compensating the phase. In order to overcoming the abovemensioned shorthand, the improved cost function is applied to the MMA algorithm. In MMA algorithm, the error is consists of the dispersion constant only, but in S-MMA, the error is consists of the dispersion constant considering the output of decision device (sliced symbol) in order to updating the tap coefficients. By using the two kind error signal, the adaptive equalization algorithm has different performance. In this paper, we compare to the adaptive equalization algorithm performance by using the recovered constellation, residual isi, MD (Maximum Distortion) and SER as a index when the transmitting signal is 16 and 64-QAM and then passing through the same communication channel. As a result of simulation, the S-MMA can improving the Roburstness in SER performance compared to the MMA in the high order QAM signal.

  • The effect of raw wheat flour on starch retrogradation retardation was investigated in a rice starch paste model. Specifically, in terms of amylase activity present in the wheat flour, the retardation effect was investigated depending on reaction temperature (40, 60, and $80^{\circ}C$), incubation time (0, 20, 40, and 60 min), and wheat flour addition levels (0-10%). An increase in wheat flour concentration resulted in a rapid decrease in the elastic modulus (G') as the incubation time increased. The G' changes of the rice starch pastes were furthermore fitted by the first order reaction for the reaction rate estimation on the temperature basis. The experimental reaction rate of the paste sample incubated with 10% wheat flour at $40^{\circ}C$ exhibited good agreement with the predicted value. This result implied that the first order reaction kinetics could be suitable to predict the changes in the G' as a function of incubation temperature and wheat flour concentration.

  • An analytical method capable of predicting various stress-strain responses in axially loaded concrete confined with FRP (fiber reinforced polymers) composites in a rational manner is presented. Its underlying idea is that the volumetric expansion due to progressive microcracking in mechanically loaded concrete is an important measure of the extent of damage in the material microstructure, and can be utilized to estimate the load-carrying capacity of concrete by considering the corresponding accumulated damage. Following from this, an elastic modulus expressed as a function of area strain and concrete porosity, the energy-balance equation relating the dilating concrete to the confining device interactively, the varying confining pressure, and an incremental calculation algorithm are included in the solution procedure. The proposed method enables the evaluation of lateral strains consecutively according to the related mechanical model and the energy-balance equation, rather than using an empirically derived equation for Poisson's ratio or dilation rate as in other analytical methods. Several existing analytical methods that can predict the overall response were also examined and discussed, particularly focusing on the way of considering the volumetric expansion. The results predicted by the proposed and Samaan's bilinear equation models correlated with observed results with a reasonable degree, however it can be judged that the latter is not capable of predicting the response of lateral strains correctly due to incorporating the initial Poisson's ratio and the final converged dilation rate only. Further, the proposed method seems to have greater benefits in other applications by the use of the fundamental principles of mechanics.

  • Concrete has excellent mechanical properties, high durability, and economical advantages over other construction materials. Nevertheless, it is not an easy task to apply concrete to long span bridges. That's because concrete has a low strength to weight ratio. Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) has a very high strength and hence it allows use of relatively small section for the same design load. Thus UHPC is a promising material to be utilized in the construction of long span bridges. However, there is a possibility of crack generation during the curing process due to the high binder ratio of UHPC and a consequent large amount of hydration heat. In this study, adiabatic temperature rise and mechanical properties were modeled for the stress analysis due to hydration heat. Adiabatic temperature rise curve of UHPC was modeled superposing 2-parameter model and S-shaped function, and the Arrhenius constant was determined using the concept of equivalent time. The results are verified by the mock-up test measuring the temperature development due to the hydration of UHPC. In addition, models for mechanical properties such as elastic modulus, tensile strength and compressive strength were developed based on the test results from conventional load test and ultrasonic pulse velocity measurement.

  • Fiber fracture is one of the dominant failure phenomena affecting the total mechanical Performance of the composites. Fiber fracture locations were measured through the conventional optical microscope and the nondestructive acoustic emission (AE) technique and then were compared together as a function of the epoxy matrix modulus and the fiber surface treatment by the electrodeposition method (ED). Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was measured using tensile fragmentation test in combination of AE method. ED treatment of the fiber surface enlarged the number of fiber fracture locations in comparison to the untreated case. The number of fiber fracture events measured by the AE method was less than optically obtained one. However, fiber fracture locations determined by AE detection corresponded with those by optical observation with small errors. The source location of fiber breaks by AE analysis could be a nondestructive, valuable method to measure interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of matrix in non-, semi- and/or transparent polymer composites.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the flexural strength and reliability of highly translucent colored zirconia for all ceramic restoration. Materials and Methods: Bar-shaped specimens (25 × 4 × 2.5 mm) were prepared from highly translucent monolithic zirconia. Three experimental groups were set up according to color (shade A0, A1, and A3). For each group, 20 specimens were prepared. Flexural strength was determined using a 3-point flexural test and results were analyzed with one-way ANOVA test. Weibull statistical analysis provided 2 parameter estimates: Weibull modulus and characteristic strength. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was performed. Results: There was statistically significant difference between uncolored (Shade A0) and colored (shade A1 and A3) (P < 0.05), but there was no difference between colored groups (P > 0.05). The uncolored group had higher reliability compared with colored study groups. On x-ray diffraction analysis of each group, typical peaks of tetragonal phase appeared in all groups. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this in vitro study, coloring highly translucent zirconia had significant effect on flexural strength and reliability. Therefore, clinicians should be careful when using highly translucent colored zirconia to prevent breakage of veneering ceramic and enhance aesthetics.

  • Commercially pure titanium (CP Ti) and Ti-6Al-4V alloys have been widely used for biomedical applications. However, the use of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy in biomaterial is then a subject of controversy because aluminum ions and vanadium oxide have potential detrimental influence on the human body due to vanadium and aluminum. • Blast-induced anisotropic rock damage around a blast-hole was analyzed by a using numerical method with user-defined subroutine based on continuum damage mechanics. Anisotropic blasting pressure was evaluated by applying anisotropic ruck characteristics to analytical solution which is a function of explosive and rock properties. Anisotropic rock damage was evaluated by applying the proposed anisotropic blasting pressure. Blast-induced isotropic rock damage was also analyzed. User-defined subroutines to solve anisotropic and isotropic damage model were coded. Initial rock damages in natural ruck were considered in anisotropic and isotropic damage models. Blasting pressure and elastic modulus of rock were major influential parameters from parametric analysis results of isotropic rock damage. From the results of anisotropic rock damage analysis, blasting pressure was the most influential parameter. Anisotropic rock damage area in horizontal direction was approximately 34% larger and about 12% smaller in vertical direction comparing with isotropic rock damage area. Isotropic rock damage area under fully coupled charge condition was around 30 times larger than that under decoupled charge condition. Blasting pressure under fully coupled charge condition was estimated to be more than 10 times larger than that of decoupled charge condition.
