The compaction control method of national road substructure is using field density test to determine the relative compaction and plate bearing test to check the load bearing capacity. However, these two tests digitize a construction site manager's judgment based on his experience, so mechanical basis is weak. Resilient modulus method, which is recently being used to resolve such problem, is evaluated as a rational design method of pavement structure that can rationally reflect the stress-strain state of pavement materials that is caused by the condition of load repetition of vehicle load. However, the method of measuring the resilient modulus is difficult and lengthy, and it has many problems. To replace it, light falling weight test is recently being proposed as a simple test method. Therefore, this research uses dynamic plate loading test, which quickly and simply measures the elastic modulus of the subgrade and sub-base construction and site of maintenance, to judge the possibility of compaction control of the stratum under the road, and it proposes relation formula by analyzing the result of static load test.

The end bearing behavior of piles socketed in weathered/soft rock is generally dependent upon the mass conditions of rock with fractures rather than the strength of intact rock. However, there are few available data and little guidance in the prediction of the end bearing capacity of drilled shafts socketed in weathered/soft rock, considering rock mass weathering. Therefore, a database of 13 load tests was constructed first, and new empirical relationships between the base reaction modulus of piles in rock and rock mass properties were developed. No correlation was found between the compressive strengths of intact rock and the base reaction modulus of weathered/soft rock. The ground investigation data regarding the rock mass conditions(e.g. Em, Eur, RMR, RQD) was found to be highly correlated with the base reaction modulus, showing the coefficients of correlation greather than 0.7 in most cases. Additionally, the applicability of existing methods for the end bearing capacity of piles in rock was verified by comparison with the field test data.
This study examined the structural performance of experimental parallel strand lumber (PSL) from a Larch veneer strand. The prototype of PSL from a Larch veneer strand was manufactured in the experimental laboratory and tested. The bending and dowel bearing strength were determined from the modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), and dowel bearing strength based on a 5% offset yield load. The test results indicated that the average MOR of PSL was higher than that of 2 × 4 dimension lumber, and the average MOE of PSL was lower than that of 2 × 4 dimension lumber. A linear relationship was observed between the MOR and MOE. The allowable bending stress of PSL was derived as specified in ASTM D2915 and compared with other research. The dowel bearing strength of PSL in parallel to the grain was approximately double that perpendicular to the grain of PSL. A comparison of several theoretical calculations based on each national code for the dowel bearing strength was conducted, and some theoretical equations produced results closer to the experimental results when it was parallel to the grain, but the difference was higher in the case perpendicular to the grain. The test results showed that PSL made with Japanese larch veneer strands appeared to be suitable for a raw material of structural composite lumber (SCL) appeared to be used as a raw material for SCL.

In this study, the Johnson-Kendall-Roberts(JKR) theory was combined with the instrumented indentation technique (IIT) to evaluate work of adhesion and modulus of elastomeric polymer. Indentation test was used to obtain the load-displacement data for contacts between Tungsten Carbide indenter and elastomeric polymer. And the JKR contact model, contrived to take viscoelastic effects of polymer into account, was applied to compensate the contact area and the elastic modulus which Hertzian contact model would underestimate and overestimate, respectively. Besides, we could obtain the thermodynamic work of adhesion by considering the surface energy in this contact model. In order to define the relation between JKR contact area and applied load without optical measuring of contact area, we used the relation between applied load and contact stiffness by examining the correlation between JKR contact area and stiffness through dimensional analysis with 14 kinds of elastomeric polymer. From this work, it could be demonstrated that the interfacial work of adhesion and elastic modulus of compliant polymer can be obtained from a simple instrumented indentation testing without area measurement, and provided as the main algorithm of compliant polymer characterization.

The end bearing behavior of piles socketed in weathered/soft rock is generally dependent upon the rock mass conditions with fractures rather than the strength of intact rock. Therefore, a database which includes 13 load tests performed on cast-in-place concrete piles and soil investigation data at the field test sites was made first, and new empirical relationships between the base reaction modulus of piles in rock and rock mass properties were developed. No correlation was found between the compressive strengths of intact rock and the base reaction modulus of weathered/soft rock. The ground investigation data regarding the rock mass conditions (e.g. Pressuremeter modulus and limit pressure, RMR, RQD) was found to be highly correlated with the base reaction modulus, showing the coefficients of correlation greater than 0.7 in most cases. In addition, the applicability of existing methods for the end bearing capacity of piles in rock was verified by comparison with the field test data.
Resilient modulus has been used for characterizing the stress-strain behavior of subgrade soils subjected to traffic loadings. With the recent release of the M-E Design Guide, highway agencies are further encouraged to implement the resilient modulus test to improve subgrade design. The subgrade design for the trackbed, however, is primarily relying on the static test results such as $K_{30}$ and deformation modulus, Ev. Therefore applicability of the resilient modulus for the design of trackbed needs to be evaluated. In this study, physical property tests, unconfined compressive tests and resilient modulus tests were conducted to assess the resilient and permanent strain behavior of 14 cohesive subgrade soils. A predictive model for estimating the resilient modulus is proposed based on the results of unconfined compressive tests and tangent elastic modulus, unconfined compressive strength, failure strain, secant modulus at peak, and yield strain. The predicted resilient moduli using the predictive models compared satisfactorily with measured ones. Although the permanent strain occurs during the resilient modulus test, the permanent behavior of subgrade soils is currently not taken into consideration.
In order to analyze the effect of the cyclic lateral loading on the response of a pile-soil system, a full-scale single steel pile was subjected to one-way cyclic loading. The test pile was driven into a bi-layered soil consisting of a normally consolidated saturated clay overlying a silty sandy layer, the site being submerged by water up to one meter above the mudline in order to reproduce the conditions of an offshore pile foundation. The aim of this paper is to present the main results of interpretation of the cyclic lateral tests in terms of pile deflections, bending moment, and cyclic P-Y curves. From these latter an absolute secant reaction modulus EAS,N was derived and a simple calculation model of the test single pile is proposed based on this modulus. Two applications of the proposed model are carried out, one with a 2D finite element modelling, and the second with a load transfer curves-based method.

The characteristics of resilient modulus(Mr) which dominates the life of pavement and the design of pavement were investigated on the test specimens which were cement treated and non-treated of the three different soil types. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The resilient modulus was decreased by increasing the cyclic deviator stress ($\sigma$d) , especially the resilient modulus was gradually decreased or sometimes increased when the value of ad was greater than 0.75- 1. 0kg/cm$^2$. 2. The resilient modulus was increased by increasing the homogeneous confined stress ($\sigma$do) and such phenomena were distinct on the coarse soils. 3. The resilient modulus was increased by increasing the ratio of confined stress(Kc), and this phenomena were eminent on the coarse soils too, and the higher permanent strain was showed by increasing the value of Kc. 4. In the drained cyclic triaxial compression test, the value of ad, Kc, and (Oho) was introduced by the following interrelated equations which were similar to the Mr model of Cole. Kcn/Mr=K1(J$_2$/ $\tau$oct)K2 ............. (coarse soli) Mcn/Mr=K3($\sigma$dp/ $\tau$f)k4 ...............(fine soils) 5. The stress path was not much affected by the value of Mr, however, moisture content, dry desity, and contant of fines affected the value of Mr. 6. In the soil-cement specimens, the resilient compression strain($\varepsilon$d) was decreased by the increment of the $\sigma$ho, and Mr was decreased by increasing the $\sigma$d 7. In the flexible pavement. the cement treated layer should be designed not to fail by the fatigue before the designed traffic load, and actually the pavement could cover the traffic load to a certain extent under the post-crack phase, therefore farther studies on this phenomena' are required in the design analysis. 8. The finite element computer program (ANALYS) was used for displacement analysis of pavement containing the cement-treated layer, The result showed that the program used for this analysis was proved to be usable.
The hardness and elastic modulus of three bulk materials are computed from the load and displacement data which are measured during basic nanoindentation test and compared with values determined by independent means to assess the accuracy of the method. The results show that with this technique, modulus and hardness and elastic modulus profile through depth of silicon nitride and silicon oxynitride films. The results show that for silicon nitride film deposited on silicon, hardness and elastic modulus increase as the volume ratio of NH3 : SiH4, which had been used for deposition, increases up to 20.0; and for silicon oxynitride film on silicon, the hardness and elastic modulus profile changes distinctly as the relative amount of oxygen in deposition gas mixture changes.
An experimental investigation on the flexural fatigue behavior of a RC bridge slab retrofitted with Carbon Fiber Sheet (CFS) is presented. The test slab was almost identical to the slab of a highway viaduct in terms of the amount of reinforcement, quality of concrete and thickness of the slab, which was 18cm. Repeated load corresponding to 3.0, 4.5 or 6.0 times of the design load was applied to the test slab. Normal type and high-elastic modulus type of CFS were used for strengthening. The test slabs were loaded in dry or wet condition. Two different types of an-choring system were adapted. Some of the test slabs were damaged by the repeated load and retrofitted by CFS, then loaded again to see the improvement of the fatigue life. Infrared Thermography was also performed to investigate the debonding condition of CFS. From the test results, Carbon Fiber Sheet can be applied to the RC bridge slabs as a feasible retrofitting material.
