  • The switched diversity, although its performance is a little inferior to the selection diversity, is widely used due to its advantage that only one RF circuit is required for its operation without respect to the number of antennas in use. In this paper, we propose an application of the antenna switched diversity to a spread spectrum system with adaptive modulation and derived the optimal antenna switching threshold to maximize the average transmission bit rate. We also compared the performances of the proposed system with those of the two cases using a single antenna and the selection diversity with two antennas in terms of the average number of bits per symbol(BPS), the probability of no transmission, and the average BER. The performance analysis shows that, if the number of paths in a multipath channel environment increases, the performance of the proposed scheme becomes closer to that of the selection diversity based system in terms of the average BPS. Furthermore, the proposed scheme produces as almost high the probability of no transmission as the selection diversity based system for the case of low average SNR, although the former yields a little higher probability of no transmission than the latter fer the case of high average SNR.

  • System performances in terms of image quality between an amorphous silicon DR system and a conventional film-screen system were evaluated. Various aspects of image quality MTF (modulation transfer function), NPS (noise power spectrum), SNR(signal-to-noise ratio) and contrast were measured and calculated. The MTF of the DR system was comparable to the film-screen systems. The noise was mainly dominated by the quantum mottle in both systems and the electronic noise was found in the DR system. The contrast of the DR system was better than the film-screen systems by virtue of high sensitivity and image processing. Compared to the film-screen systems in general radiography, the DR system had similar resolution and showed better contrast with the same exposure condition after contrast manipulation. The results of this study provide some useful information about the performance of the DR system in connection with medical applications.

  • For two well-known modulation methods, stepwise current modulation (SCM) and pulse width modulation (PWM), the effects of driving current modulation conditions on chromaticity were experimentally investigated in a white LED lighting system. For the experimental implementation of both SCM and PWM, a white LED lighting was fabricated using phosphor converted (PC) white light emitting diodes (LEDs) and a driving circuit module was developed. By using them, the variations of illuminance, color coordinates, and spectrum were evaluated under various forward current conditions. Through the analysis in color coordinates, yellow shift in SCM and blue shift in PWM were observed on chromaticity diagrams with increasing average driving current. In addition, in order to analyze color deviation quantitatively, color distance before and after current increase, and the correlated color temperature (CCT) were calculated. As a result, for the white LED lighting in both modulation conditions, the maximum difference in the calculated CCT was obtained close to 1000 K. It means that careful consideration is required to be taken in the design of illumination systems to avoid serious problems such industrial accidents.

  • In this paper, we analyze the algorithm of the methodology developed by ITU for the calculation of spectrum requirements of IMT-Advanced. We propose an approach to estimate user density using traffic statistics, and to estimate spectrum efficiencies using carrier-to-interference ratio distribution and capacity theory as well as experimental data under Korean mobile communication environments. We calculate the IMT-Advanced spectrum requirements based on the user density and spectral efficiencies acquired from the new method. In the case of spectral efficiency using higher modulation and coding schemes, the spectrum requirement of IMT-Advanced is approximately 2700 MHz. When applying a $2{\times}2$ multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system, it is approximately 1500 MHz; when applying a $4{\times}4$ MIMO antenna system, it is approximately 1050 MHz. Considering that the development of new technology will increase spectrum efficiency in the future, the spectrum requirement of IMT-Advanced in the Korean mobile communication environment is expected to be approximately 1 GHz bandwidth.

  • The error probability for coherent frequency-hopped spread-spectrum multiple-access communications is computed by using characteristic function method. We employ PSK as a modulation scheme. The channel capacity is performance measure and the minimum bit signal-to-noise ratio for reliable communications is obtained.

  • In this paper, we propose and evaluate OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing)-SSB(Singe Side Band) for improving spectral efficiency. The proposed system is based on OFDM system using DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform) and DHT(Discrete Hilbert Transform) for SSB modulation, this proposed system transmit a BPSK modulation signal through a single sideband and BPSK modulation signal through the other single sideband. In other words, we design and evaluate the proposed system which transmit two BPSK signal through each other single sideband. Also each BPSK BER performance is similar with theoretical BPSK BER performance. the proposed system transmits BPSK signal using half of spectrum of conventional OFDM system or transmit two BPSK signal in same time.

  • A heterogenous network is the one of key technologies for 5G, where one cell is divided into small cells in order to extend coverage and support high data rates. Divided cells aggravates the intercell interference problem as the cell edge increases. In order to avoid the intercell interference, it is the best to allocate the different spectrum for each cells. However, it also decreases the spectral efficiency. Therefore, the trade-off between the spectral efficiency gain and the signal quality loss by the interference should be considered for an efficient spectrum sharing in the heterogenous network. The adaptive modulation is the method to change the transmitted bit according to the channel quality, which is adopted as the standard in the most practical communication systems. It should be considered to applied the performance analysis into the practical systems. In this paper, the overall cell data rates is analyzed for the heterogenous network under the adaptive modulation. The Monte Carlo simulation results verify the correctness of the analysis.

  • In this paper, we propose a biomimetic communication method using a dolphin whistle to covertly transmit the communication signal. A conventional CSS (Chirp Spread Spectrum) modulation technique divides dolphin whistle into several slots and modulates with up and down chirp signals. That causes the time-frequency characteristic difference between the original dolphin whistle and the camouflage performance is degraded. In this paper, we propose a delay based modulation scheme to eliminate distortions. The simulation results show that the bit error rate of the proposed method is better performance than that of the conventional CSS modulation method by about 3.5 dB to 8 dB. And the camouflage performance that evaluated through the cross correlation in the time-frequency domain is also better than that of the CSS modulation method.

  • In the field of visible light communication (VLC), light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are used for transmitting data via visible light. In this study, we analyze pulse dual slope modulation (PDSM) as a means of delivering information in VLC. PDSM involves the modulation of symmetrical slope pulses to encode binary 0s and 1s, and owing to the moderately increasing and decreasing pulse shapes that are created, this method enables more spectral efficiency than the variable pulse position modulation (VPPM) technique currently adopted in IEEE 802.15.7. In particular, PDSM allows for the avoidance of intra-frame flicker by providing idle pulses in a spectrum-efficient way. A simple detection scheme is proposed for PDSMsignals, and its bit error rate (BER) is analyzed mathematically at varying slopes to validate the process through simulation. The BER performance of PDSM detection using dual sampling is compared to the performances of PDSM and VPPM using correlation detection. It is found that, when the probability of idle pulse transmission is less than 0.08 and higher than 0, the BER of dual sampling PDSM is lower than that of PDSM using correlation detection over the entire light intensity range.

  • A novel ultra-wideband (UWB) transceiver structure is presented to be used in wireless body area networks (WBANs). In the proposed structure, a data channel and a control channel are combined into a single transmission signal. In the signal, a modulation method mixing pulse position modulation and pulse amplitude modulation is proposed. A mathematical framework calculating the power spectrum density of the proposed pulse-based signal evaluates its coexistence with conventional radio systems. The transceiver structure is discussed, and the receiving performance is investigated in the additive white Gaussian noise channel. It is demonstrated that the proposed scheme is easier to match to the UWB emission mask than conventional UWB systems. The proposed scheme achieves the data rate requirement of WBAN; the logical control channel achieves better receiving performance than the logical data channel, which is useful for controlling and maintaining networks. The proposed scheme is also easy to implement.
