  • This paper considers technological requirements to broadcast digital television signals using distributed frequency network (DFN) in the advanced television systems committee (ATSC) transmission system and proposes distributed translator (DTxR) to meet such requirements. In the DFN, DTxR uses different frequency from main transmitter, but same among DTxRs. In addition, this paper introduces digital signal processing (DSP) techniques, which consist of demodulation, equalization, transmitter identification (TxID) generation and insertion, and modulation, to implement DTxR.

  • An SDR (Software Defined Radio) system based on general purpose computing platform has benefits of ease of software development process, high degree of software compatibility, and cost-effectiveness of general purpose processors. This paper discusses design and implementation of a dual-mode SDR system that supports both cordless phone and walkie-talky system running on Linux-based general purpose computing platform. For this purpose, we designed modulation and demodulation software on open source-based GNU radio middleware. We also designed a customized RF front-end hardware which performs frequency conversion between RF and IF. The proposed SDR system successfully exhibited its ability to operate both cordless phone and walkie-talky communication on Intel processor-based general purpose computing platform. But experience with the prototype SDR system shows that further research is required for run-time software reconfiguration and efficient integration with conventional TCP/IP protocol stacks.

  • Recently, it is possible to high speed transmission of the non-voiced data, including voice, data, moving image instead of voice only in the past by changing the communication method to digital form from analog owing to the development of semiconductor and computer technology which for information transmission of the remote point. By doing so, we can get the improvement of the noise effect and low cost but the loss of transmission bandwidth. It is necessary to take some method in oreder to reducing the fading which is propotional to transmission bandwidth during the transmission of radio communication channel, especially. When we design the digital communication system, we must considered to the fading effect in order to determination of the transmitting power, modulation /demodulation method, transmission speed, bit error rate. This paper mainly concerns to the method to the channel simulator which descrives the fading effect during the transmission by computer model and digital filter modeling of the radio fading channel by unsing the transmitting and received signal. By taking the inverse of the characteristic of the modeled filter, it is possible to improvement of the communication system by reducing the distortion and inter-symbol interference which occurs in the channel.

  • Recently, the demand of broadband communications such as high-speed internet, HDTV, 3D-HDTV and ATM backbone network has been increased drastically. For transmitting the broad-bandwidth data using wireless network, it is needed to use ka-band frequency. However, the use of this ka-band frequency is seriously affected to the received data performance by rain fading and atmospheric propagation loss at the Ka-band satellite communication link. So, we need adaptive MODEM to endure the degraded performance by channel environment. In this paper, we will present the structure and design of the 155Mbps adaptive Modem adaptively compensated against channel environment. In order to compensate the rain attenuation over the ka-band wireless channel link, the adaptive coding schemes with variable coding rates and the multiple modulation schemes such as trellis coded 8-PSK, QPSK, and BPSK are adopted. And the blind demodulation scheme is proposed to demodulate without Information of modulation mode at the multi-mode demodulator, and the fast phase ambiguity resolving scheme is proposed. The design and simulation results of adaptive Modem by SPW model are provided. This 155Mbps adaptive MODEM was designed and implemented by single ASIC chip with the $0.25\mu{m}$ CMOS standard cell technology and 950 thousand gates.

  • In this paper, we proposed a burst mode AGC loop and preamble detector applicable for VDL(VHF Digital Link) mode-2 using D8PSK modulation scheme and the performance analysis of proposed schemes is described. Generally the AGC scheme can be divided into two types, continuos and burst mode AGC. The continuos mode is performed well only with an analog feedback AGC loop. But the analog feedback AGC loop is not suitable for burst mode since its gain lock time is more than preamble duration, which causes the preamble detector misses preamble. Hence a fast digital AGC loop is required for burst mode. Also the AGC loop has to be designed with full gain during idle time to detect bursts although the signal level is very low. If the time to acquire gain lock is slow, the preamble detector fail to detect burst due to saturation of a lot of preamble samples. The receiver performance might be down even if the burst was detected because the preamble is used to estimate several parameters need to demodulation at receiver. In this paper we analysed relationships between the AGC loop and preamble detector. we present an AGC loop and preamble detector in burst mode.

  • Vehicle communication can facilitate efficient coordination among vehicles on the road and enable future vehicular applications such as vehicle safety enhancement, infotainment, or even autonomous driving. In the $3^{rd}$ Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), many studies focus on long term evolution (LTE)-based vehicle communication. Because vehicle speed is high enough to cause severe channel distortion in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) environments. We can utilize channel estimation methods to approach a reliable vehicle communication systems. Conventional channel estimation schemes can be categorized as least-squares (LS), decision-directed channel estimation (DDCE), spectral temporal averaging (STA), and smoothing methods. In this study, we propose a smart channel estimation scheme in LTE-based V2V environments. The channel estimation scheme, based on an LTE uplink system, uses a demodulation reference signal (DMRS) as the pilot symbol. Unlike conventional channel estimation schemes, we propose an adaptive smoothing channel estimation scheme (ASCE) using quadratic smoothing (QS) of the pilot symbols, which estimates a channel with greater accuracy and adaptively estimates channels in data symbols. In simulation results, the proposed ASCE scheme shows improved overall performance in terms of the normalized mean square error (NMSE) and bit error rate (BER) relative to conventional schemes.

  • Recently, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has developed device-to-device (D2D) communication to cope with the explosively increasing mobile data traffic. The D2D communication uses sidelink based on single carrier-frequency division multiple access (SC-FMDA) due to its low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). In addition, demodulation reference signal (DMRS) is designed to support multiple input multiple output (MIMO). In this paper, we propose the DFT-based channel estimation scheme for sidelink in D2D communication. The proposed scheme uses the 2-Dimensional Minimum Mean Square Error (2-D MMSE) interpolation scheme for the user moving at a high speed. We perform the system level simulation based on 20MHz bandwidth of 3GPP LTE-Advanced system. Simulation results show that the proposed channel estimation scheme can improve signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), throughput and spectral efficiency of conventional scheme.

  • The SSB modem performs the modulation process which converts the digital voltage level to the audible frequency band signal and the demodulation process which converts reversely the audible frequency signal to the digital voltage level. The modulator and the demodulator are implemented with a single DSP chip. Because of the SSB specific character, the distortion occurs when the frequency is changed. This distortion has no effect on voice communication, but it has an significant effect on data communication. In other words, it is impossible to send data stream with adjacent 2 periods. Therefore, in case of using 2-tone FSK, it is needed to send at least 3 periods to transmit 1 bit. Therefore we implemented the modem using modified phase-delay shift keying to transmit 1 tone signal for high speed transmission. In the 1200[bps] mode, it generates 0, $187{\mu}s$ delay time at 1.3kHz symbol frequency, and in the 2400[bps] mode, 0, $70{\mu}s$, $130{\mu}s$, $200{\mu}s$ delay time at 1.5kHz symbol frequency. Finally, in the maximum 3600[bps] mode, it generates 0, $100{\mu}s$, $160{\mu}s$, $250{\mu}s$ delay time at 2.0kHz symbol frequency. The measured results of the implemented SSB modem shows a good transfer functional characteristic by spectrum analyzer, almost same bandwidth in pass band and 20dB higher SNR comparing the German PACTOR and American CLOVER and in the experimental transmitting test, we verified the transmitted data is received correctly in platform.

  • This paper describes a design of 8192/2048-point FFT/IFFT processor (CFFT8k2k), which performs multi-carrier modulation/demodulation in OFDM-based DVB-T receiver. Since a large size FFT requires a large buffer memory, two design techniques are considered to achieve memory-efficient implementation of 8192-point FFT/IFFT. A hybrid structure, which is composed of radix-4 single-path delay feedback (R4SDF) and radix-4 single-path delay commutator (R4SDC), reduces its memory by 20% compared to R4SDC structure. In addition, a memory reduction of about 24% is achieved by a novel two-step convergent block floating-point scaling. As a result, it requires only 57% of memory used in conventional design, reducing chip area and power consumption. The CFFT8k2k core is designed in Verilog-HDL, and has about 102,000 Bates, RAM of 292k bits, and ROM of 39k bits. Using gate-level netlist with SDF which is synthesized using a $0.25-{\um}m$ CMOS library, timing simulation show that it can safely operate with 50-MHz clock at 2.5-V supply, resulting that a 8192-point FFT/IFFT can be computed every 164-${\mu}\textrm{s}$. The functionality of the core is fully verified by FPGA implementation, and the average SQNR of 60-㏈ is achieved.
