This paper describes a research study on the durability and strength properties of thin quiet-permeable asphalt concrete. Such asphalt mixes have high porosity, which offers significantly better drainages than normal mix designs. However, these materials also exhibit poor durability and strength limiting their use in pavement application. To remedy this, fiber and polymer modifiers have been proposed. All samples were added to modified binder which were prepared with or without the modifiers and fiber using Marshall mix procedures and were experimentally tested using various standardized testing procedures including percent air void for porosity, cantabro test and marshall stability. In general, the results of marshall stability showed that modified mixtures were equivalent to unmodified mixtures. Especially, the result of cantabro tested modified mixtures was superior to unmodified mixtures.
PURPOSES : The main distress of asphalt pavements in monsoon climate regions are caused by water damage and plastic deformation due to repeated rain season and increased heavy vehicle traffic volume. In this study, the mechanical properties of polymer-modified warm mix asphalt (PWMA) materials are evaluated to use in monsoon climate regions such as Indonesia. METHODS : Comprehensive laboratory tests are conducted to evaluate moisture resistance and permanent deformation resistance for three different asphalt mixtures such as the Indonesian conventional hot-mix asphalt (HMA) mixture, the polymer-modified asphalt mixture, and the polymer-modified warm mix asphalt (PWMA) mixture. Dynamic immersion test and indirect tensile strength ratio test are performed to evaluate moisture resistance. The wheel tracking test is performed to evaluate rutting resistance. Additionally, the Hamburg wheel tracking test is performed to evaluate rutting and moisture resistances simultaneously. RESULTS :The dynamic immersion test results indicate that the PWMA mixture shows the highest resistance to moisture. The indirect tensile strength ratio test indicates that TSR values of PWMA mixture, Indonesian PMA mixture, and Indonesian HMA mixture show 87.2%, 84.1%, and 67.9%, respectively. The wheel tracking test results indicate that the PWMA mixture is found to be more resistant to plastic deformation than the Indonesian PMA. The dynamic stability values are 2,739 times/mm and 3,150 times/mm, respectively. Moreover, the Hamburg wheel tracking test results indicate that PWMA mixture is more resistant to plastic deformation than Indonesian PMA and HMA mixtures. CONCLUSIONS :Based on limited laboratory test results, it is concluded that rutting resistance and moisture susceptibility of the PWMA mixture is superior to Indonesian HMA and Indonesian PMA mixtures. It is postulated that PWMA mixture would be suitable for climate and traffic conditions in Indonesia.
Moisture damage of asphalt mixtures can occur because of a loss of bond between the asphalt binder and the fine and coarse aggregates. Therefore, moisture damage on asphalt pavements is the main cause of potholes, which is one of the main distress type of asphalt pavement. The purpose of this study is to evaluation effect moisture damage on material properties of asphalt mixtures through the laboratory performance test. The existing Modified Lottman test procedure was improved and the number of times that thermal cyclic conditioning can be added until the asphalt mixtures is damaged, was tested in order to exhibit the changes of the material properties because of moisture damage by immersion. Through the above experiments, it was found that the material properties of asphalt mixtures on room-temperature were rapidly decreased with loss of about 50% at initial stage of moisture damage caused by the amount of repeated immersion. Also, it was found that the property damage ratio using material properties of failure energy and $DCSE_f$ by test temperature $25^{\circ}C$ were showed a high relationship to moisture damage of the asphalt mixtures caused by the amount of repeated immersion.

This study was performed to evaluate performance of polymer-modified asphalt mixtures and specially designed reinforcement techniques against reflection cracking of the asphalt pavement overlay. Selected polymers were used for asphalt modification and polyester fiber, a polypropylene film (vinyl) and a grid were used for mixture reinforcement. Using the asphalt mixture with optimum asphalt content, a slab was made and cut into two pieces of specimen. A layer of grid or vinyl was placed at the bottom of specimen to strengthen the pavement layer against crack. A repeated loading was applied to the asphalt mixture specimen which is Placed on a cement concrete with a pseudo-crack. Crack propagation under repeated loading was monitored and effectiveness of the devised crack retarding techniques was evaluated. From the test results. a significant retardation of mode I crack progress was monitored from some of the modified and reinforced asphalt mixtures.

PURPOSES : Reflection cracking has been one of the major causes of distress when asphalt pavement is laid on top of concrete pavement. This study evaluated the reflection cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures reinforced with asphalt embedded glass fiber and carbon fiber using a Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) overlay tester. METHODS : Different asphalt mixtures such as polymer-modified mastic asphalt (PSMA) and a dense graded asphalt mixture were reinforced with asphalt-embedded carbon fiber and glass fiber. For comparison purposes, two PSMA asphalt mixtures and one dense graded asphalt mixture were evaluated without fiber reinforcement. Two different overlay test modes, the repeated overlay test (R-OT) and monotonic overlay test (M-OT), were used to evaluate the reflection cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures at $0^{\circ}C$. In the R-OT test, the number of repeated load when the specimen failed was obtained. In the M-OT test, the tensile strength at the peak load and tensile strain were obtained. RESULTS : As expected, the fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture showed a higher reflection cracking resistance than the conventional nonreinforced asphalt mixtures based on the R-OT test and M-OT test. The dense graded asphalt mixture showed the least reflection cracking resistance and less resistance than the PSMA. CONCLUSIONS : The TTI overlay tester could be used to differentiate the reflection cracking resistance values of asphalt mixtures. Based on the R-OT and M-OT results, the carbon-fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture showed the highest reflection cracking resistance among the nonreinforced asphalt mixtures and glass-fiber-reinforced asphalt mixture.
Asphalt pavements have to perform under the conditions of heavily-loaded vehicles due to the industrialization and large temperature variance between the summer and the winter. Due to these factors, a characteristics change of early permanent deformation becomes a big issue, and to remedy this problem many research to use modified asphalt are being widely conducted. However, most of the modified asphalt is being paved after milling the surface course and applying tackcoating, and it is being used mostly for the repair and maintenance purpose rather than pavement of new national road. The purpose of this investigation is to obtain some fundamental data for the evaluation of the performance and long-term performance of the construction material mixtures by the laboratory test and field experiments. For the field experiment, 200m of two-lanes national road, that is being paved for the new national road under the direction of Pusan Regional Construction Management Office, was paved with SBS PMA and PSMA asphalt mixtures, which are an modified asphalt mixtures used for the surface course, on top of the base course paved with other modified asphalt mixtures. The remaining section of the new national road was paved with dense grade mixture. The laboratory tests assessed and analyzed the mixture characteristics by Marshall's stability test, strength tests and wheel-tracking test. On the basis of the evaluation result of the temperature control and roughness of the newly constructed road at the field experiment site, it is desired to evaluate and identify the most economic modified asphalt mixtures by long-term performance evaluation and LCC(Life Cycle Cost) analysis in order to apply the test result to the design of new road construction in the future.
Many temperature-related problems are created in asphalt pavement due to the low temperature. In particular, loss of tensile strength due to low temperature is known to be responsible for thermal failure of pavements in cold regions under $-20^{\circ}C$. The objective of this study is to evaluate characteristics of resistance against low-temperature cracking of polymer asphalt concrete mixtures modified with LDPE and SBS. The test results showed that the mixtures had the maximum indirect tensile strength(ITS) at low temperature ranging from $-10^{\circ}C. It was proved through ITS test that the stress due to differential thermal contraction over the tensile strength did generate internal damage at the temperature below $-20^{\circ}C$. It was shown that the asphalt mixtures modified with polymer had better ITS than the normal asphalt mixture at the temperature below $-20^{\circ}C$. Thus the effect of modification was revealed as tensile strength improvement. From the results of this study, it was recommended that polymer-modified asphalt should be used in order to prevent low-temperature cracking in cold region.

PURPOSES: The objective of this study was to determine the optimum ratio of mix design, for a reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) content of 100%, for spray injection application. METHODS: A literature review revealed that spray injection is an efficient and cost-effective application for fixing small defective regions of an asphalt pavement. Rapid-setting polymer-modified asphalt mixtures prepared from two types of rapid-setting polymer asphalt emulsion were subjected to Marshall stability and wet track abrasion tests, in order to identify the optimum mix designs. RESULTS and CONCLUSIONS : Different mix designs of type A and type B emulsions were prepared using RAP and virgin aggregates, in order to compare the performance and determine the optimum mix design. The performance of mixtures prepared with RAP was superior to that of mixtures containing virgin aggregates. Moreover, for optimum ratio of the design, the binder content prepared from RAP was set to 1~2% lower than that consisting of virgin aggregates. Compared to their Type A counterparts, type B mixtures consisting of a reactive emulsion performed better in the Marshall stability and wet track abrasion tests. The initial results confirmed the advantages associated with using RAP for spray injection applications. Further studies will be performed to verify the difference in the optimum mix design and performance obtained in the lab-scale test and tests conducted at the job site by using the spray injection machine.
The effect of modified asphalts is evaluated by simple comparison of a single parameter (i.e., tensile strength, stiffness, etc.) between modified asphalt mixture and unmodified mixture. The use of a single parameter to evaluate the effect of modified asphalt must be questioned. Rather, a single unified framework that accounts for changes in key mixture properties is needed to effectively evaluate the modified asphalt mixtures. This study used a new performance-based fracture parameter as a single unified framework, the Energy Ratio (ER), for quantifying the effect of modified asphalts oil the fracture resistance of mixtures. The Energy Ratio was then used as a performance criterion for calculating the construction cost of two modified asphalt pavements (SBS and Crumb Rubber) and unmodified asphalt pavement. The results showed that the Energy Ratio of SBS modified asphalt was higher than those of crumb rubber and unmodified asphalt. Cost analyses indicated that the construction cost of the AC layer would be reduced by up to 24% by SBS modification. Based on the results, the Energy Ratio is capable of evaluating the effect of modified mixtures, and may form the basis of a promising fracture criterion for performance-based thickness design in asphalt pavements.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum mix design of the content of 100 % reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) for spray injection application with different binder types. METHODS : Literature review revealed that spray injection method is the one of the efficient and economical methods for repairing a small defective area on an asphalt pavement. The Rapid-Setting Polymer modified asphalt mixtures using two types of rapid setting polymers-asphalt emulsion and a quick setting polymer asphalt emulsion-were subjected to the following tests to determine optimum mix designs and for performance comparison: 1) Marshall stability test, 2) Retained stability test, 3) Wet track abrasion test, and 4) Dynamic stability test. RESULTS and CONCLUSIONS : Type A, B, and C emulsions were tested with different mix designs using RAP aggregates, to compare the performances and determine the optimum mix design. Performance of mixtures with Type A emulsion exceeded that of mixtures with Type B and C emulsion in all aspects. In particular, Type A binder demonstrated the highest performance for WTAT at low temperature. It demonstrated the practicality of using Type A mixture during the cold season. Furthers studies are to be performed to verify the optimum mix design for machine application. Differences in optimum mix designs for machine application and lab application will be corrected through field tests.
