  • As ship's propulsion shafting system has been complicated, many linear methods that have been used until now are not sufficient enough to produce proper solutions and these solutions are ofter unreasonable. So we need to solve nonlinear systems, and many methods for solving nonlinear vibration system have been developed. In this study, the propulsion shafting system was modeled with Duffing's nonlinear vibration system and multi-degree-of-freedom, and analyzed by using Quasi-Newton method. And for the purpose of confirming the reliability of the calculating results for nonlinear forced torsional vibration of the propulsion shafting system, the nonlinear calculated results were compared with the linear calculated ones for ship's propulsion shafting system. In the result, for analysis of the forced torsional vibration of the propulsion systems with nonlinear elements, the modified Newton's method is confirmed reasonable.

  • In this paper, an iterative inversion method in angular spectral domain is presented for microwave imaging of a perfectly conducting cylinder. Angular spectra are calculated from measured far-field scattered fields. And then both the propagating modes and the evanescent modes are defined. The center and initial shape of an unknown conductor may be obtained by the characteristics of angular spectra and the total scattering cross section (TSCS). Finally, the orignal shape is reconstructed by the modified Newton algorithm. By using well estimated initial shape the local minima can be avoided, which might appear when the nonlinear equation is solved with Newton algorithm. It is shown to be robust to noise in scattered fields via numerical examples by keeping only the propagating modes and filtering out the evanescent modes.

  • In most boundary estimation algorithms estimation in EIT (Electrical Impedance Tomography), anomaly boundaries can be expressed with Fourier series and the unknown coefficients are estimated with proper inverse algorithms. Furthermore, the number of anomalies is assumed to be available a priori. The prior knowledge on the number of anomalies may be unavailable in some cases, and we need to determine the number of anomalies with other methods. This paper presents an algorithm for the boundary estimation in EIT (Electrical Impedance Tomography) using the prior information from the conventional Newton-Raphson method. Although Newton-Raphson method generates so poor spatial resolution that the anomaly boundaries are hardly reconstructed, even after a few iterations it can give general feature of the object to be imaged such as the number of anomalies, their sizes and locations, as long as the anomalies are big enough. Some numerical experiments indicate that the Newton-Raphson method can be used as a good predictor of the unknown boundaries and the proposed boundary discrimination algorithm has a good performance.

  • To the unconstrained programme of non-convex function, this article give a modified BFGS algorithm associated with the general line search model. The idea of the algorithm is to modify the approximate Hessian matrix for obtaining the descent direction and guaranteeing the efficacious of the new quasi-Newton iteration equation $B_{k+1}s_k=y^*_k,\;where\;y^*_k$ is the sum of $y_k\;and\;A_ks_k,\;and\;A_k$ is some matrix. The global convergence properties of the algorithm associating with the general form of line search is proved.

  • Accurate load-carrying capacities and moment distributions of thin circular plates are obtained for clamped or simply-supported boundary condition under various concentrated circular loadings. The material is regarded as perfectly-plastic based on an arbitrary yield function such as the Tresca yield function, the Johansen yield function, and the farmily of .betha.-norms which possesses the von Mises yield function and the Frobenius norm. To obtain the lower bound solutions, a maximization formulation is derived and implemented for efficient numerical calculation with a finite difference method and the modified Newton's method. The numerical results demonstrate plastic collapse behavior of circular plates and provide their design criteria.

  • In this paper, we propose a license plate detection method with improved Adaboost learning and MCT (Modified Census Transform). The MCT represents the local structure patterns as integer numbered feature values which has robustness to illumination change and memory efficiency. However, since these integer values are discrete, a lookup table is needed to design a weak classifier for Adaboost learning. Some previous research efforts have focused on minimization of exponential criterion for Adaboost optimization. In this paper, a method that uses MCT and improved Adaboost learning based on Newton's optimization to exponential criterion is proposed for license plate detection. Experimental results on license patch images and field images demonstrate that the proposed method yields higher performance of detection rates with low false positives than the conventional method using the original Adaboost learning.

  • This paper is concerned with modified integration algorithm on the strain-space for rate and temperature dependent elasto-plastic constitutive relations in order to obtain more accurate results in numerical implementation. The proposed algorithm is integrated analytically using integration by part and chain rule and then is applied to the 2-stage Lobatto IIIA with second-order accuracy. It has advantage that is able to consider the convective stress rates on the yield surface of the strain-space. Also this paper is carried out the iteration procedure using the Newton-Raphson method to enforce consistency at the end of the step. And the performance of the proposed algorithm for rate and temperature dependent constitutive relation is illustrated by means of analysis of adiabatic shear bands.

  • The algorithm Proposed utilizes the two-levels technique. In the first level which consists of two phases, the cross-sectional area of the truss member is optimized by transforming the nonlinear problem into SUMT, and solving SUMT utilizing the modified Newton-Rahson method. In the second level, the geometric shape is optimized utilizing the unindirectional search technique of the Powell method which make it possible to minimize only the objective function. The algorithm Proposed in this study is numerically tested for several truss structures with various shapes, loading conditions and design criteria, and compared with the results of the other algorithms to examine its applicability and stability. The numerical comparisons show that the two-Levels algorithm Proposed in this study is safely applicable to any design criteria, and the convergency rate is relathely fast and stable compared with other iteration methods for the geometric optimization of truss structures.

  • In the present article, functionally graded small-scaled plates based on modified strain gradient theory (MSGT) are studied for analyzing the nonlinear bending and post-buckling responses. Von-Karman's assumptions are applied to incorporate geometric nonlinearity and the first-order shear deformation theory is used to model the plates. Modified strain gradient theory includes three length scale parameters and is reduced to the modified couple stress theory (MCST) and the classical theory (CT) if two or all three length scale parameters become zero, respectively. The Ritz method with Legendre polynomials are used to approximate the unknown displacement fields. The solution is found by the minimization of the total potential energy and the well-known Newton-Raphson technique is used to solve the nonlinear system of equations. In addition, numerical results for the functionally graded small-scaled plates are obtained and the effects of different boundary conditions, material gradient index, thickness to length scale parameter and length to thickness ratio of the plates on nonlinear bending and post-buckling responses are investigated and discussed.

  • The algorithm proposed utilizes the tow-levels technique. In the first level which consists of teeatment only the applied load and design stress as the random variables whose parent distribution has the normal distribution, the cross-sectional areas of the truss members such that the their probabilities of failure have the preseribed failure probabilites are optimized by transforming the nonlinear problem into SUMT, and solving it utilizing modified Newton-Raphson method. In the second level, the geometric shape of truss structure is optimized by utilizing the unidirectional search technique of Powell method which makes it possible to minimize only the objective function. The algorithm proposed is numerically tested for the several truss structures with various shapes and loading conditions. The numerical analysis shows that the rate of decreasing the weight of truss structures is dependent on the prescribed failure probability of the each member of truss structure and the covariance of the applied load and design stress.
