Low density polyethylene (LDPE) films incorporated with 1% antimicrobial agents of Rheum palmatum extract, Coptis chinensis extract, and Ag-substituted inorganic zirconium matrix, were applied to modified atmosphere packaging of 200 g fresh strawberries. Plain LDPE film package, PVC wrap and perforative pinhole package of the film impregnated with 1% Rheum palmatum extract were also constructed for comparative purpose. All the packages were stored for 13 days at $5^{\circ}C$ and measured in package atmosphere, microbial count and quality attributes of the strawberry fruits. The antimicrobial LDPE films retarded the growth in total aerobic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria and yeast on the fruits, and resulted in significantly lower decay. The degrees of reduced microbial growth and fruit decay in the antimicrobial film packages were more pronounced, when applied by hermetical sealing to produce the modified atmospheres of low $O_2$ (<4.0%) and $CO_2$ concentrations with $6.3{\sim}9.0%$. The hermetically sealed packages of antimicrobial LDPE films also showed better retention of fruit firmness and did not give any negative effect on the physical and chemical qualities of strawberries.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) in combination with BN/PE film on the shelf life and quality of fresh-cut iceberg lettuce during cold storage. The total mesophilic population in the sample packed in BN/PE film under MAP conditions was dramatically reduced in comparison with that of PE film, PE film under MAP conditions, and BN/PE film. The $O_2$ concentration in the BN/PE film under MAP conditions decreased slightly as the storage period progressed. The coloration of the iceberg lettuce progressed the slowest when it was packaged in BN/PE film under MAP conditions, followed by BN/PE film, PE film, and PE film under MAP conditions. The shelf life of fresh-cut iceberg lettuce packaged in the BN/PE film under MAP conditions was extended by more than 2 days at $10^{\circ}C$ as compared with that of the BN/PE film in which the extension effect was more than 2 days longer than that of PE, PET, and OPP films.
To develop a wrapping film, which suppresses the microbial decay through the storage and distribute of greenhouse fresh produce, the antimicrobial packaging films were made and applied to the preservation of grapes(Campbell early). For the purpose the films were made by adding 1% grapefruit seed extract(GFSE) to LDPE film(Control). Graps were separately wrapped with packaging films in the state of closely-adhered packaging as well as modified atmosphere packaging(MAP). The wrapped grapes were stored at 5$^{\circ}C$ for 65 days and then the colony count of contaminated microorganims, decay ration of grapes, the gas component within the packages and chemical qualities were investigated. The antimicrobial film packaging showed the efficient results to suppress microbial growth as compared with control. The total number of containated microorganisms were decreased gradually through all the storage period. In the closely-adhered packaging and MAP the decay ratios of grapes was 31% and 19%, indivisually. After the storage period of 65 days, the interior gas components of MAP were 4.5% of O2 and 17.6% of CO2, which were efficient for the storage of grapes. In addition, no negative effects in sweetness and acidities occurred.
This study examined the effects of vacuum packaging and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on the meat quality of ${\alpha}$-tocopherol supplemented broiler chicks after prolonged refrigeration. The supplemented ${\alpha}$-tocopherol levels had no effect on the body weight and feed efficiency. The dietary treatments and packaging methods had no significant effects on the level of microbial growth, lightness, and the metmyoglobin content. The vacuum packaging showed the highest level of purge loss. The broilers supplemented with either 200 or 400 IU of ${\alpha}$-tocopherol had a lower level of malondialdehyde than the control group. The vacuum packaged meats from chicks fed the control diet showed the highest levels of lipid oxidation. The lipid oxidative stability was most improved in modified atmosphere (20% $CO_2$ + 80% $N_2$) packaged breast meat from the broilers supplemented with either 200 or 400 IU of ${\alpha}$-tocopheryl acetate.
A Polypropylene (PP) film was ablated using a femtosecond laser with a center wavelength of 785 nm, a pulse width of 184 fs and a repetition rate of 1 kHz. Increments of both pulse energy and the shot number of pulses lead to co-occurrence of photochemical and thermal effect, demonstrated by the spatial expansion of rim on the surface of PP. The shapes of the laser-ablated PP films were imaged by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and measured a 3D optical measurement system (NanoFocus). And, the oxygen transmission rate (ORT) of periodically laser-ablated PP film were characterized by oxygen permeability tester for modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) of fresh fruit and vegetable. Our results demonstrate that femtosecond pulsed laser is efficient tools for breathable packaging films in modifying the flow of air and gas into and out of a fresh produce container, where the micropatterns are specifically tailored in size, location and number which are easily controlled by laser pulse energy and pulse patterning system.

The aim of this study was to develop a model that could be used in the design of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) for Mandarin oranges. Respiratory data at 5, 10, 20$^{\circ}C$ for mandarin oranges were gathered and altered for create useful respiration model. The maximum rate of oxygen uptake increased with increasing temperature. The packaging materials were conventional low density polyethylene and polypropylene with anti-fog, and anti-fungi treatments, and thickness was 30 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and 50 $\mu\textrm{m}$. Permeability tests were performed to find their oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapor transmission rate as increases in temperature. Test results were then converted to logarithm format for MAP modeling. Optimum gas composition in the package system for fruits were set according to literature and upper or lower limits of oxygen and dioxide established. To predict gas composition at certain storage time, weight of fruits, film thickness, film type, and other variables, respiration rate was studied at various storage conditions. The validity of the model was tested experimentally by observing actual atmospheric changes inside packages. It is concluded that the strategy developed is of use in designing dynamic gas exchange MAP systems, and also has potential uses in similar agricultural products.
This study was conducted to investigate the minimization of off-flavor occurrence and the maintenance of high quality in modified atmosphere packaged Pleurotus ostreatus during the storage. There are 4 treatments used to preserve high quality and for deodorization of MAP mushroom: Artemisia princeps, Artemisia capillaries, green tea and activated charcoal. The mushrooms were packed in polyethylene film with each treatment and were stored at 5 and $20^{circ}C$. No difference was observed in weight loss, $CO_2\;and\;O_2$ concentration, or color of mushrooms packed with or without treatment. However, the principal component analysis (PCA), electronic nose, revealed differences in off-flavor occurrence between control (MAP mushroom without treatment) and treatment groups at $5^{\circ}C$. This result suggested that Artemisia princeps and Artemisia capillaries was masking the off-flavor in MAP mushroom because the unique flavor of them was strongly revealed and green tea and activated charcoal might have a role of removing the off-flavor by adsorbing ethanol and acetaldehyde, which is known to cause off-flavor. The sensory test showed that Artemisia princeps and Artemisia capillaries dough treatment inhibited microbial growth.
The containment filtered venting system (CFVS) filters the atmosphere of the containment building and discharges a part of it to the outside environment to prevent containment overpressure during severe accidents. The Korean CFVS has a tank that filters fission products from the containment atmosphere by pool scrubbing, which is the primary decontamination process; however, prediction of its performance has been done based on researches conducted under mild conditions than those of severe accidents. Bubble behavior in a pool is a key parameter of pool scrubbing. Therefore, the bubble behavior in the pool was analyzed under various injection flow rates observed at the venturi nozzles used in the Korean CFVS using a wire-mesh sensor. Based on the experimental results, void fraction model was modified using the existing correlation, and a new bubble size prediction model was developed. The modified void fraction model agreed well with the obtained experimental data. However, the newly developed bubble size prediction model showed different results to those established in previous studies because the venturi nozzle diameter considered in this study was larger than those in previous studies. Therefore, this is the first model that reflects actual design of a venturi scrubbing nozzle.
This study compared the effects of cocopeat and perlite growth media on the storability and quality of sweet pepper fruit stored using modified atmosphere packages (MAP) and carton boxes. The fruits were stored at 8℃ for 35 and 30 days, respectively. Perlite-grown fruits had a significantly lower size at harvest due to the medium's inability to hold plenty of water during the growing stage. Contrary to what is expected for small fruits, the result shows box-stored perlite-grown fruits to have lower weight loss and a longer shelf life than cocopeat-grown fruits, while MAP fruits have indifference. Perlite fruits also had a higher quality in terms of dry matter, soluble solids, and vitamin C, while box-stored fruits had a better visual quality. As expected, respiration and ethylene production rates were high, and fruits had similar after-storage firmness values. Based on the findings, perlite-grown sweet pepper fruits may have a better quality and give preference in a box storage condition.
