This study examined the adsorption of a synthetic cutting fluid and cutting fluid effluent on chitosan and SDS-modified chitosan, Chitosan and SDS-modified chitosan were prepared in form of beads and fibers. A series of batch experiments were carried out as a function of the initial concentration of cutting fluid, contact time and pH of the fluid. The contact angle study suggested that the SDS-modified chitosan was more hydrophobic than chitosan. The Zeta potential study showed that chitosan, SDS-modified chitosan and synthetic cutting fluid had a point of zero charge (PZC) at pH 7.8, 9 and 3.2, respectively. SDS-modified chitosan has a greater adsorption capacity than chitosan. The experimental results show that adsorption capacity of the cutting fluid on 1.0 g of SDS-modified chitosan at pH 3 and for a contact time of 120 min was approximately 2,500 g/kg. The adsorption capacity of chitosan and SDS-modified chitosan increased with decreasing pH. The Langmuir, Freundlich, and Brunauer Emmett and Teller (BET) adsorption models were used to explain the adsorption isotherm. The Langmuir isotherm fitted well with the experimental data of chitosan while the BET isotherm fitted well with the SDS-modified chitosan data. Pseudo first- and second-order kinetic models and intraparticle diffusion model were used to examine the kinetic data. The experimental data was fitted well to a pseudo second-order kinetic model. The significant uptake of cutting fluid on chitosan and SDS-modified chitosan were demonstrated by FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM and heat of combustion.
Background: Thoracoscopic T2 sympathicotomy had been performed as a simple and effective method in treating palmar hyperhidrosis, however, this method had the complications of compensatory hyperhidrosis and facial anhidrosis. Therefore, a more limited and modified methods for T2 sympathicotomies were introduced and comparative analysis of the modified upper and lower T2 sympathicotomy were made in the treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis. Material and Method: From January 1997 to December 1998, 41 patients with palmar hyperhidrosis had been treated by modified T2 sympathicotomy at the Kon-Kuk University Seoul Hospital. Twenty-four patients underwent a modified upper T2 sympathicotomy(Group A), and seventeen patients underwent a modified lower sympathicotomy(Group B). A comparison between groups A and B were made according to the medical records and interview results. Result: All patients showed symptomatic improvements after the operation. The anisocoria, facial anhidrosis and dissatisfaction for compensatory hyperhidrosis were more common in Group A and the individual satisfaction for the operations were higher in Group B. Conclusion: The modified lower T2 sympathicotomy might be a more effective and less complicated method than the modified upper T2 sympathicotomy.
To investigate surface properties and interception performances of the new modified PVDF membrane coated with Graphene Oxide (GO) and nano-$TiO_2$ (for short the modified membrane) via the interface polymerization method combined with the pumping suction filtration way, filtration experiments of the modified membrane on Humic Acid (HA) were conducted. Results showed that the contact angle (characterizing the hydrophilicity) of the modified membrane decreased from $80.6{\pm}1.8^{\circ}$ to $38.6{\pm}1.2^{\circ}$. The F element of PVDF membrane surface decreased from 60.91% to 17.79% after covered with GO and $TiO_2$. O/C element mass ratio has a fivefold increase, the percentage of O element on the modified membrane surface increased from 3.83 wt% to 20.87%. The modified membrane surface was packed with hydrophilic polar groups (like -COOH, -OH, C-O, C=O, N-H) and a functional hydrophilic GO-polyamide-$TiO_2$ composite configuration. This configuration provided a rigid network structure for the firm attachment of GO and $TiO_2$ on the surface of the membrane and for a higher flux as well. The total flux attenuation rate of the modified membrane decreased to 35.6% while 51.2% for the original one. The irreversible attenuation rate has dropped 71%. The static interception amount of HA on the modified membrane was $158.6mg/m^2$, a half of that of the original one ($295.0mg/m^2$). The flux recovery rate was increased by 50%. The interception rate of the modified membrane on HA increased by 12% approximately and its filtration cycle was 2-3 times of that of the original membrane.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of high-heels (HH) modification on metatarsal stress in female workers. Method: Seven females who work in clothing stores ($heights=160.4{\pm}3.9cm$; $weights=47.4{\pm}4.1kg$; $age=31.3{\pm}11.1yrs$; $HH\;wear\;career=8{\pm}6.5yrs$) wore two types of HH (original and modified). The modified HH had been grooved with 1.5 cm radius and 0.2 cm depth around the first metatarsal area inside of the shoes using the modified shoe-last. Participants were asked to walk for 15 minutes on a treadmill and to stand for 10 minutes with original and modified HH, respectively. Kinetics data were collected by the F-scan in-shoe system. After each test, participants were asked to rate their perceived exertion using the Borg's 15-grade RPE scale and interviewed about their feeling of HH. Nonparametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test and effect size (Cohen's d) were used to determine the difference of the variables of interest between the original and modified HH. Results: In the present study, modified HH of the peak contact pressure of 1st metatarsal (PCP) left, PCP right, pressure time integral (PTI) left, peak pressure gradient (PPG) left during standing and PPG right during walking are greater than original HH. And even it didn't show statistically significant, the average in all pressure values of modified HH showed bigger than original HH. It surmised to be related to awkward with modified HH. Even though they said to feel the comfortable cause of big space inside of HH in the interview, they seemed to be not enough time to adapt with new HH. So their walking and standing postures were unstable. Conclusion: Modified the fore-medial part of HH can reduce the stress in the first metatarsal head and big toe area during standing and walking.
This study was examined closely physiological activation and intended to present the possibility of developing food low-fat food. Developing carbohydrate fat replacer as materials for low-fat food made of Korean potato starch, it is expected that the new demand of fat replacer will be created. Potato starch was modified by chemical modification. The calorie of starch of GPS was measured to be 3.0 kcal/g, those of chemically modified starch, HPR showed 2.5 kcal/g respectively, suggesting that calorie is decreased by modified treatment. The appropriateness of processing food was experimented by substituting the existing oil and fat containing food with gel of starch and modified starch in constant rate through utilization of modified starch. When producing mayonnaise by substituting edible oil with gel of modified starch in 10-50%, calorie was reduced by 44${\sim}$45% when substituted by 50%, suggesting the potential of low-fat food. Measuring viscosity of mayonnaise by Brookfield viscometer, the mayonnaise with HPR showed high viscosity and the chemical modified starch group of EZ also showed high viscosity. Generally, the material property of mayonnaise tended to reduce in all measured items when oil and fat are substituted by starch substituting materials and the substituting materials increase. When it comes to the emulsification stability of mayonnaise with starch substituting materials, emulsification stability of all mayonnaise with starch substituting materials is lower than that of compared group. While the group with NL as commercial fat replacer showed emulsification stability which was slightly higher than group with modified starch and the substitution group of HPR showed higher emulsification stability. Sensory evaluation for low-fat mayonnaise by substituting oil the products substituted by modified starch was more preferred than general starch substituting products such as GPS. While NL as commercially fat replacer showed the hight preference, products with H40, EZ were also highly preferred.

Preplaced aggregate concrete in the building fields has recently been used in the partial repair works for damaged reinforced concrete structures, and polymer-modified mortars have been employed as grouting mortars for the preplaced aggregate concrete. The objective of this study is to clear the properties of polymer-modified grouting mortars. Polymer-modified mortars using a polystyrene acrylic(St/Ac) emulsion as grouting mortars for preplaced aggregate concrete are prepared with various mix proportions, and tested for flexural and compressive strengths, adhesion in tension. The flexural strength of emulsion-modified grouting mortars does not give much variation with increasing fly ash replacement for cement and sand-binder ratio. With increasing polymer-binder ratio, the flexural strength and adhesion in tension of St/Ac emulsion-modified grouting mortars increases, become nearly constant or reaches a maximum at a polymer-binder ratio of 5%. From the test results, St/Ac emulsion-modified grouting mortar with a polymer-binder ratio of 5%, a fly ash replacement of 10% for cement and sand-binder ratio of 1.0 is recommended as a grouting mortar for preplaced aggregate concrete.

We propose modified exact inferential methods in logistic regression model. Exact conditional distribution in logistic regression model is often highly discrete, and ordinary exact inference in logistic regression is conservative, because of the discreteness of the distribution. For the exact inference in logistic regression model we utilize the modified P-value. The modified P-value can not exceed the ordinary P-value, so the test of size $\alpha$ based on the modified P-value is less conservative. The modified exact confidence interval maintains at least a fixed confidence level but tends to be much narrower. The approach inverts results of a test with a modified P-value utilizing the test statistic and table probabilities in logistic regression model.
In this paper, a new method of modified second order slope rotatable designs (SOSRD) using balanced incomplete block designs (BIBD) for $4{\le}v{\le}16$ is presented. In this method the number of design points required is in some cases less than the number required in Victorbabu (2305) modified slope rotatable central composite designs. Further, a new method of construction of three level modified SOSRD using BIBD is presented. The modified SOSRD can be viewed as SOSRD constructed with the technique of augmentation of second order rotatable design (SORD) using BIBD to SOSRD. These designs are useful in parts to estimate responses and slopes with spherical variance functions.

This paper discusses the strength properties of the polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powders, which is widely used for the manufacture of prepackaged-type polymer-modified mortar products at present. The polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powders are prepared with various polymer-cement ratios, and tested for air content, flexural and compressive strengths, and tensile strength. The strength properties are almost the same as those of polymer dispersion-modified mortars, depending on the polymer-cement ratios, and are improved over unmodified mortar. In particular, between tensile strength and glass transition point of polymer powder have a high correlation. It is concluded from the test results that polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powders can be used in the same manner as ordinary polymer dispersion-modified mortars.
The development of high tenacity, high modulus monofilaments from Polypropylene/Clay nanocomposite has been investigated. Pure sodium montmorillonite nanoclay was modified using hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HTAB) via an ion exchange reaction. Pure and modified clay were characterized through X-ray diffraction, FTIR and TGA. The modified clay was melt blended with polypropylene (PP) in presence of a swelling agent. Composite filaments from PP/Clay nanocomposite were prepared at different weight percentages of nanoclay and the spinning and drawing conditions were optimized. The filaments were characterized for their mechanical, morphological and thermal properties. The composite PP filaments with modified clay showed improved tensile strength, modulus and reduced elongation at break. The composite filaments with unmodified clay did not show any improvement in tensile strength but the modulus improved. The sharp and narrow X-ray diffraction peaks of PP/nanoclay composite filaments indicate increase in crystallinity in presence of modified clay at small loadings (0.5 %). The improved thermal stability was observed in filaments with modified as well as unmodified clays.
