Today's wireless access networks consist of several tiers that overlap each other. Provisioning of real time undisrupted communication to mobile users, anywhere and anytime through these heterogeneous overlay networks, is a challenging task. We extend the end-to-end approach for the handoff management in hybrid wireless data network by designing a fully mobile-controlled handoff for mobile devices equipped with dual mode interfaces. By handoff, we mean switching the communication between interfaces connected to different subnets. This mobile-controlled handoff scheme reduces the service disruption time during both horizontal and vertical handoffs and does not require any modification in the access networks. We exploit the IP diversity created by the dual interfaces in the overlapping area by simultaneously connecting to different subnets and networks. Power saving is achieved by activating both interfaces only during the handoff period. The performance evaluation of the handoff is carried out by a simple mathematical analysis. The analysis shows that with proper network engineering, exploiting the speed of mobile node and overlapping area between subnets can reduce service disruption and power consumption during handoff significantly. We believe that with more powerful network interfaces our proposal of dual interfaces can be realized.
Hull form development and Anti-rolling tank of G/T 360ton class fishery patrol ship was carried out in the CWC at Chosun university, cooperatively with WJFEL(The West Japan Fluid Engineering Laboratory). Same size of 15 knots class fishery patrol ship was selected as a parent form(Model number: CU-015), and modified fore and after body hull form under the slightly lengthened to be suitable for the operation at 20 knots. This paper investigated for a rolling performance and an effective using method when fishery patrol ship was equipped with anti-rolling tank. On several occasions of rolling test was made reference to design data of a similar ship. Although the hull form was highly constrained in being limited to modification of a parent hull form, significant wave resistance improvement was made.
This paper presents a fabrication of hydrophilic Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) with periodic wrinkling surface. The proposed periodic wrinkling surface was fabricated using the sequential processes of typical curing process of PDMS, cutting process, platinum deposition process, and wrinkling transfer process. The surface morphology of the fabricated wrinkling surface was observed by using optical and dynamic atomic force microscopy and discussed. The measured period and amplitude of wrinkling was about $2.2{\mu}m$ and $0.31{\mu}m$, respectively. And, the contact angles of water droplets on the wrinkled surface were measured in order to understand effect of the wrinkling surface on surface modification of hydrophobic PDMS. Our new finding was that the proposed wrinkling surface was hydrophilic and the measured contact angle was about $62^{\circ}$. Moreover, it was found out from the simple cell culture test that the fabricated wrinkling surface was more effective for cell spreading and adhesion than the case of native PDMS substrate.
Digital redesign techniques are to derive a digital controller fred the existing continuous controller and its plant so that the performance of the digitally controlled system is matched as closely as possible to that of the original continuous system at the sampling instants. Recently a new digital redesign technique, was developed to use the generalized sampled-data hold function(GSHF) based on the the grammian matrix. With this new technique the digitally redesigned system showed several good features compared with any existing technique in terms of the state match at the sampling instants, the large sampling period, and the transient reponses. This paper concerns a further improvement of the new digital redesign technique by employing the discrete grammian matrix instead of the continuous grammian matrix in defining GSHF. With this modification, it was observed by simulation that the transient response of the modified digital system shows far better performance than the digital system based on the continuous grammian matrix.
Database segmented and labeled up to phoneme level plays an important role in phonetic research and speech engineering. However, it usually requires manual segmentation and labeling, which is time-consuming and may also lead to inconsistent consequences. Automatic segmentation and labeling can be introduced to solve these problems. In this paper, we investigate a method to improve the performance of automatic segmentation and labeling system, where Spectral Variation Function(SVF), modification of silence model, and use of energy variations in postprocessing stage are considered. In this paper, SVF is applied in three ways: (1) addition to feature parameters, (2) postprocessing of phoneme boundaries, (3) restricting the Viterbi path so that the resulting phoneme boundaries may be located in frames around SVF peaks. In the postprocessing stage, positions with greatest energy variation during transitional period between silence and other phonemes were used to modify boundaries. In order to evaluate the performance of the system, we used 452 phonetically balanced word(PBW) database for training phoneme models and phonetically balanced sentence(PBS) database for testing. According to our experiments, 83.1% (6.2% improved) and 95.8% (0.9% improved) of phoneme boundaries were within 20ms and 40ms of the manually segmented boundaries, respectively.
The dependence of activities of Aspergillus phoenicis on the culture conditions in the progesterone transformation reaction was investigated. In the beginning of the reaction, $6{\beta},\;11{\alpha}-dihydroxyprogesterone$ was not produced even at high concentration of $11{\alpha}-hydroxyprogesterone$. However, large amount of the product was obtained after the complete exhaustion of progesterone. When spores of A.phoenicis replaced mycelia as enzyme source, $11{\alpha}-hydroxyprogesterone$ was produced after a considerably long indyction period, and its maximum production rate followed the exponential growth phase. The $6{\beta}-hydroxylation\;of\;11{\alpha}-hydroxyprogesterone$ continued, even after the stationary growth phase. A. phoenicis showed high enzyme activity for these reactions when the phosphate buffer solutions were used in place of the ordinary culture medium. The buffer solutions of low pH gave more yield of $11{\alpha}-hydroxyprogesterone$ than those of high pH. However, the addition of flucose to the buffer solutions did not activate the transformation reaction. The presence of progesterone seems to be necessary for the induction of enzymes for the $6{\beta}-hydroxylation\;of\;11{\alpha}-hydroxyprogesterone\;since\;6{\beta},\;11{\alpha}-dihydroxyprogesterone$ is not produced in the reaction medium containing only $11{\alpha}-hydroxyprogesterone$ as a substrate.
Obesity during childhood is a dominant risk factor for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), and is itself considered a disease that needs to be treated. Recently, the growth in childhood obesity in Korea has become stagnant; however, two in every ten children are still overweight. In addition, 60% or more of overweight children have at least one metabolic syndrome risk factor. Thus, childhood obesity should be controlled through lifestyle modification. This paper reviews studies of the modifiable risk factors of obesity in Korean children. According to the life-course approach, preschool-aged children (<5 years) are influenced by their parents rather than individual habits because they are under mostly parental care. Elementary school-aged children (6 to 11 years) are affected by overlapping individual and parental effects. This may mean that the establishment of individual behavior patterns begins during this period. The conditions of poor eating habits such as skipping meals, eating out, and high fat intake, along with low physical activity, facilitate increased obesity among adolescents (12 to 18 years). Notably, adolescent girls show high rates of both underweight and obesity, which may lead to the development of NCDs in their offspring. Therefore, the problem of NCDs is no longer limited to adults, but is also prevalent among children. In addition, early intervention offers cost-effective opportunities for preventing NCDs. Thus, children need primary consideration, adequate monitoring, diagnosis, and treatment to reduce the burden of NCDs later in adulthood.
