  • This paper reports the design of a multiwavelength fiber laser source that utilizes a linear cavity of hybrid Brillouin/Erbium fiber laser (BEFL). The output power, threshold power and free running cavity modes were investigated against the pump powers. The structure exhibited low threshold operation of 4 mW at 2.3 mW injected Brillouin pump power. The optimization of Brillouin pump wavelength, power and Erbium gain led to a maximum possible number of channels generated. Simultaneous and stable operation of 21 channels with 10.88 GHz channels spacing were obtained from this architecture at 1 mW injected Brillouin pump power and 90 m W Erbium doped fiber pump power in the 1555 nm region.

  • The paper deals with the vibration and dynamic stability of cantilevered pipes conveying fluid on elastic foundations. The relationship between the eigenvalue branches and corresponding unstable modes associated with the flutter of the pipe is thoroughly investigated. Governing equations of motion are derived from the extended Hamilton's principle, and a numerical scheme using finite element methods is applied to obtain the discretized equations. The critical flow velocity and stability maps of the pipe are obtained for various elastic foundation parameters, mass ratios of the pipe, and structural damping coefficients. Especially critical mass ratios, at which the transference of the eigenvalue branches related to flutter takes place, are precisely determined. Finally, the flutter configuration of the pipe at the critical flow velocities is drawn graphically at every twelfth period to define the order of the quasi-mode of flutter configuration.

  • This paper deals with a switching method to minimize the current ripple component of 3-phase interleaved bidirectional DC-DC converter for charging and discharging of the battery. The characteristics of the output current ripple in 3-phase and 2-phase operation modes according to the variation of battery voltage is analyzed and a phase conversion method for minimizing the magnitude of the current ripple is proposed. The proposed method can extend the light load range because the switching frequency is lower than that of a 3-phase operating system. Simulation and experimental results show the usefulness of the proposed method.

  • Clinical analysis were performed on 247 cases of thoracic trauma, those were admitted & treated at the department of thoracic & cardiovascular surgery,Hanyang University Hospital during the period from Jan,1989 to June,1992. Age distribution of those was from 2 to 80 years old & mean age was 38 years old. The ratio of male to female patient was 186:61 [3:1].This ratio revealed high incidence in male patient. The most common cause of trauma was traffic accident in this series. The modes of injury were as follows: traffic accident 124 cases[50.2%],fall down 52 cases[21.05%], stab wound 47 cases[19.03%] and gun-shut wound 1 case.Ellapse time from accident to admission were 141 cases [57.09%] under 6 hr.Rib fracture were observed in 159 cases[64.37%], hemo or pneumothorax were observed 134 cases[54.25%] of total cases and location distributed Right:Left:Both[74:112:37], in left predominant. Conservative,non-operative treatment were performed in 128 cases and operation[open thoracotomy] 32 cases.Mortality was 1.6%[4 cases] & most common cause of death were due to irreversible shock with brain edema. Conclusively, more evaluation & co-operation of other department were expected treatment & better prognosis.

  • At the high speed operation, the high demagnetization voltage can reduce the negative torque, so the output power and efficiency can be improved. In this paper, a novel power converter for single phase SRM with high demagnetization voltage is proposed. A simple passive capacitor circuit is added in the front-end, which consists of three diodes and one capacitor. Based on this passive network, the two capacitors can be connected in series and parallel, so the phase winding of SRM obtains general do-link voltage in excitation mode and the double dc-link voltage in demagnetization mode. The operation modes of the proposed converter are analyzed in detail. Some computer simulation results is done to verify the performance of proposed converter.

  • This paper presents a study on evaluating the reliability indices considering a transmission system. Because successful operation of electric power under the deregulated electricity market depends on transmission system reliability management, quantity evaluation of transmission system reliability is very important. This paper introduces features and operation modes of the Transmission Reliability Evaluation for Large-Scale Systems(TRELSS) Version 6.0, a commercial program made in EPRI, and TranRel-I V3.2, a educational program made in GSNU(GyeongSang National University) for assessing reliability indices of composite power system. The packages access not only bulk but also bus indices for reliability evaluation of composite powers system. The practicality, effectiveness and future works of this methodology are illustrated by demonstrations of two case studies of modified IEEE 25 buses reliability test system using TRELSS and TranRel-I and a brief case study for the KEPCO size system using TranRel-II made in GSNU.

  • In this paper, a tightly regulated triple output asymmetrical half bridge flyback (ASHF) converter is proposed. In order to regulate all output voltages, pulse frequency modulation (PFM), pulse width modulation (PWM) and phase delay (PD) are used simultaneously. In comparison with the conventional PWM-PD method, the interactions among the control variables are minimized and the operating range is increased. By the utilization of a multi winding transformer, the auxiliary transformer and the blocking capacitor are eliminated and the size and cost of the proposed converter is reduced. The operation principle of the converter is explained and the modes of operation are investigated. Based on the results, the steady state characteristics of the converter are explored. A 24V/10A, 12V/5A, 5V/10A hardware prototype is built and tested to verify the analysis results and the voltage regulation of the triple outputs of the proposed converter.

  • A new small signal stability analysis method for eigenvalue analysis is presented. This method utilizes the Resistive Companion Form (RCF) for the computation of the transition matrix over a specified time interval, which corresponds to a single cycle operation of the system. This method is applicable to any system, with or without switching element. An illustrative example of the method is presented and the eigenvalues are compared with those of the conventional state space method (analog) in order to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed eigenvalue analysis method. Also, the variations of oscillation modes that are caused by the switching operation can be precisely analyzed using this method.
