This paper has focused on comprehending the interior designs and characteristics of modern department stores in Korea by looking into the birth and changes of those built under the Japanese Forced Occupation Period. The first modem department stores including Mitsukoshi, Georgia and Hwashin Department Stores began to appear in Korea under the Japanese Colonial Rule. They considered a variety of architectural elements like construction planning, shop arrangement, path of customer movement and interior design. The interior of modem department stores aimed to pursue the so-called modernization movement, but failed to fully contain the unique characteristics of the times in that particular period. Modem department stores took on new western styles prevailed in Korea and were characterized by the eclecticism in which various architectural forms exist together. In other words, their interiors implied a sign of the times in the confusing and corrupt world then. Especially those modern department stores were designed, repaired and extended by foreign designers who were ignorant of the history of Korean architecture. What is worse, their further remodelling practices made big mistakes by considering only functional and economical aspects and giving a back seat to the architectural and historical value of existing modern department stores. Therefore, we should make more efforts to study and conserve the fundamentals of modem architectures like modem department stores in order to have better understanding of the aesthetic value of indoor space and facilitating smooth communication between past and present.

Modem society has been complicated and diverse, and then various paradigms coexist. We can see Postmodernism moving in the flows of modern architecture. Therefore looming large is the Fold architecture that can surmount the limit of design in Postmodernism and Deconstruction and suits to the modern culture as an architectural alternative. So I believe this research can make us perceive the streams of modern interior space by considering the features and meanings of Fold conception which has been noticeable in the overall architecture and culture since the middle of 1990's with analyzing and defining atypical organic Fold characteristics appearing in modern interior since 2000, and also predict the next changing direction.

The modern architecture has to find more essential configuration order rather than the spatial order in the reasonable feint. In other side, paintings and sculptures as a part of the building in the past become a pure art and develop an abstract art. Also they make many affects on the modern architecture as a paradigm. New material has brought to the new forms and the changes of the overall culture and art. One of the new changes has made the object that is one of unique culture symptoms in the 20C and the general part of the modem art includes it. The wall that limits the inside area through mass and volume before the recent times had treated as the object to express the special mean and character. However, the wall has developed as a component that consists of the internal space through surface and volume rather than mass or structure since the recent times. Now, I survey the objective tendency of the wall in the modem interior architecture mainly focused on the relation between object in the abstract art and wall inside.

One of the big difference between Aalto and other modem architects lies in an attitude that Aalto went beyond the principle of dogmatic functionalism. As an architect of Northern Europe, Aalto made unique architecture that showed both the language of modem architecture and vernacular architecture. He presented the best example which showed modernity in architecture without losing the meaning of the context including site, region and cultural tradition. With this background, Aalto developed his own typological design approach. As Wolfsburg church was designed in his prime of time, it showed the origin and evolutionary process of religious architecture as well as general features of Aalto's design. Clustered site plan, dynamic space of interior, the adequate control of natural light are representative characteristics found in Aalto's religious architecture. Wolfsburg church also demonstrate these features in more specific way including the continuity of wall and ceiling that showed spatial dynamics, free opening of wall which reflects on functions, and careful adjust of natural light. As a result, Aalto showed his typological design strategy that added new design ideas to the accumulated design vocabularies in the design of Wolfsburg church.

As Dutch structuralism discovered a possibility that can improve the problem of modem architecture through study on non-western area. Dutch structuralism had tremendous impact on Philosophy, psychology, art history and the style of a dress and many other cultural trend. In architecture, Aldo van Eyck embodied that theory and succeeded to Herman Hertzberger and Piet Blom. As result Structuralism related with architecture has dealt with the participation and domain of residents, namely public domain and private domain, the approach property of public space, middle domain which shows the harmony between public domain and private one, and the structuralism discovered that each element of public space and private space has been developed as an architectural type that makes a group by repetitive arrangement and it found out a possibility that can make up problems overlooked in modem architecture through development and change.

In the 21st century modem architecture, not only environmental problems and sustainable development but also two subjects, 'Globalization' and 'Localization', have become important issues. The modern application of vernacular design which is the design model including the characteristics of region, a people and tradition can be a solution for localization and sustainable development. Vernacular design gives many ideas in respect of organic art and design, the dilemma of modern architecture, and practical solution of its problems, and is considered as an important resource of modern ecological architecture. This study aims to investigate the meaning and types of vernacular design and confirm the development possibility of this design as the important element of modem regional ecological architecture. In addition, through case studies, it will demonstrate that the regional ecological architecture based on vernacular design can solve new multidimensional architectural problems in the 21st century.

Nowdays, transparency is one of important design concept in architectural expression and the new architectural probability of transparency is pursued continuously. This study is focused on the expressional characteristics of transparency in the comtemporary interior architecture. The purpose of this study is that defines the concept of transparency and analyzes the characteristics and effects of transparency that is expressed variously in comtemporary interior architecture. The development of science and technology came true a entirely new architecture with material and skills made a foundation of comtemporary interior architecture. We have seen many modern architectural projects succeeded in obtaining one-way and two-way transparency with the modem technical advancement.

Ecological traces appearing in contemporary architecture are based on modern architecture and most aspects on the contemporary architecture are related with the successive trend or break of the modern architecture. The concept of environment in the modern age has established clear destination, as it has been considered as nature. The architecture under a mechanical world view in the modem age has sustained the opposing connection with nature as environment. However, there have been architects maintaining the sympathy with nature in that vortex. This trend has been regarded as same context as ecological architecture and estimated to the outpost of ecological characteristics appearing in the contemporary architecture. This study is to make it clear that the ecological manifestation in the contemporary architecture is based on the ecology in the modem architecture through considering ecological ideals of architects in the modern architecture and considering space composition and structural properties in the modern architecture of ecological paradigm. The scope of this study contains spacial analysis, design strategy, and design types of organic architecture in nature, which has appeared from the modern age. First, the division into period is carried out according to the organic tendency of non-mainstream in the modern architecture: Arts and Crafts Movement, Art Nouveau, Sezession, Expressionism, Organic Architecture, Regionalism, Internationalism. Therefore, this study is significant to be on the search for a start to suggest ecological point of view to architectural space in modern architecture and is search organic characteristics for ecological characteristics in modern architecture; organic relation, thermal buffer space, regionalism, multi-layer, energy efficiency.

Construction space of Japan suggests the factor of speculation to human and reveals tradition. The speculation can be embodied in the aspect of space and human's mental aspect is expressed as a main factor of tradition space of Japan. The purpose of this study is to research expression characteristic of speculation space, shown in the architecture of modem architect, Tadao Ando, who succeeds the concept. His works surveyed through research contain the emotion of nature and human, which are traditional factors of Japan. Moreover, it is reinterpreted by modem space, delivers its function of space and physical factor to user and grants value to activity and behavior of user residing in the space. Users recognize movement, create new meaning of space and accept physical barrier in the space. In conclusion, it can be said that the space of speculation is not a simple visual thing but a frame of visual structure, which is invented for embodiment. The factors show the Japanese architecture, real and contemplating one, which is positive in real life and allows experience. Through the conditions above, the researcher can find the meaning from the aspect that modem architecture of Japan is planned on the basis of concept of speculation.

Modern architecture does a role in terms of connecting traditional and current architecture. In the same time, Which is important part of korean architecture history because of introduction of western architecture. Accordingly, At this meaninglessly going out and leaving of modern architecture, the purpose of this study is systematic researching of 'Cho-sun government-general' interior which is disappeared. I progressed this study to research into the period context at construction of Cho-sun government-general md tendency of architecture and interior at that time. And then understand interior space organization of it. Cho-sun government-general adopted Neo-Baroque style from tendency of that time. Also, showed composite order which is mixed in the Greek temple, the Renaissance and the classic style representing the power. This characteristic is different from current composit order, which is comprehended by our. In order to understand aesthetic value of current straight interior space, It have to be interacted the present and past. But It's averted because it was made in the period of Japanese imperialism. Therefore, We should explore history of interior design that is endowed with sociality and historicity between modern and future interior space as well as current.
