  • The cost-benefit analysis is a technique for assisting with decision about the use of society's scare resources. There exists no detailed assessment like cost-benefit analysis. But recently, many policy analysts criticized the merit of cost-benefit analysis. As it is, it can be said that partial or approximate estimates of benefit and cost may be more dangerous than helpful. The purpose of this study is to overcome the limit of traditional cost-benefit analysis. For this purpose, we use the system dynamics approach for setting up new cost-benefit analysis, which we named that ‘Dynamics Cost-Benefit Analysis'. The usefulness of ‘Dynamics Cost-Benefit Analysis' is as follows; finding structural causal relationship between cost factors and benefit factors, understanding the long-term behavior of systems economic feasibility. In this study, we apply 'Dynamic Cost-Benefit Analysis' to case that is construction investment of funeral house by local government sector.

  • At this point that port industry brings a new change as the concept of 'Green Logistics' appears, studies on an economic analysis of existing port Re-modeling have normally been conducted focused on market value factors such as Benefit-Cost analysis, On the other hand, there have been few studies on the analysis of Non-market value factors such as environmental value. Therefore, the purpose of this study is aimed to establish a Feasibility analysis model of Incheon inner port Re-modeling in the aspect of Non-market Benefit Factors classified by related factors such as, marine environment, waterfront facility and welfare of users by using AHP methodology based on the extracted result through previous studies.

  • The notion of System of Systems (SoS), which is composed by many independent systems (i.e., Constituent Systems, CS), has emerged in various domains including social infrastructure. It is widely expected that complex requirements, which cannot be achieved in each CS-level, will be achieved in an SoS-level. While verification of SoS-level goal achievement is one of the most important problems, concrete case studies on SoS modeling and verification are still rare. In this paper, we focus on the fact that each CS performs an action for its own purpose by its own decision-making mechanism. We propose a novel Action-Benefit-Cost (ABC) SoS model which caters to the independent decision-making mechanisms of CSs. Using an abstract SoS example, this proposal provides a case study for the modeling and quantitative verification of the ABC SoS model.

  • Virtual Manufacturing is a technology facilitating effective development and agile production of products via computer models representing physical and logical schema and the behavior of the real manufacturing systems. For the successful application of this technology, a virtual plant as a well-designed and integrated environment is essential. We propose a series of systematic approaches and effective methods for construction and operation of a virtual plant in this paper, such as a 3-D CAD modeling, cell and line simulations and databases. We developed key technologies for measuring and 3-D CAD modeling of many equipments, facilities and structures of the buildings. In order to study the benefit of virtual manufacturing, we constructed a sophisticated virtual plant model of a Korean automotive company's body shop, and conducted precise simulations of unit cell, lines and the whole plant. We could obtain the benefit of savings in time and cost in many manufacturing preparation activities in the new car development processes.

Analyzing local perceptions toward the new nuclear research reactor in Thailand

  • Understanding public perception on nuclear research reactor is necessary for the policy maker to adopt such technology in Thailand, especially the locals who live in the proposed location. The study compared perceptions between the locals living near the proposed nuclear research reactor location (within 5 km) and those living in the outer region (5-15 km). Structural equation modeling technique was adopted by assuming casual relationships between latent variables including social status, information perception, trust, benefit perception and risk perception on the local acceptance of research reactor. The results showed that the strongest relationships for both the inner and the outer perimeters were from information perception toward technology acceptance via trust and benefit perception. While both zones showed similar results, the outer perimeter seemed to show slightly stronger effects than those in the inner perimeter.

iPSC technology-Powerful hand for disease modeling and therapeutic screen

  • Cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases are major health threats in many developed countries. Recently, target tissues derived from human embryonic stem (hES) cells and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), such as cardiomyocytes (CMs) or neurons, have been actively mobilized for drug screening. Knowledge of drug toxicity and efficacy obtained using stem cell-derived tissues could parallel that obtained from human trials. Furthermore, iPSC disease models could be advantageous in the development of personalized medicine in various parts of disease sectors. To obtain the maximum benefit from iPSCs in disease modeling, researchers are now focusing on aging, maturation, and metabolism to recapitulate the pathological features seen in patients. Compared to pediatric disease modeling, adult-onset disease modeling with iPSCs requires proper maturation for full manifestation of pathological features. Herein, the success of iPSC technology, focusing on patient-specific drug treatment, maturation-based disease modeling, and alternative approaches to compensate for the current limitations of patient iPSC modeling, will be further discussed.   • This paper has shown that Linear Induction Motor(LIM) and Rack and pinion type are efficient in selecting railway routes and systems after considering time, geo-spatial characteristics and the floating population by benchmarking domestic and overseas mountain trains. The benefit-cost analysis through the use of modeling on user's willingness to pay is conducted as a means that provides access to tourism resources. this paper concludes that the benefit-cost varies in response to changes in the amount of user's willingness to pay by age. It is expected that this paper serves as a reference data in the introduction stage of the mountain train project implemented by central or local governments with tourism resources in mountainous areas as the mountain train has turned out to be economically efficient while various potential benefits that have not been included in the benefit-cost analysis need to be quantified and remain to be studied further.

Hydrodynamic modeling of semi-planing hulls with air cavities

  • High-speed heavy loaded monohull ships can benefit from application of drag-reducing air cavities under stepped hull bottoms. The subject of this paper is the steady hydrodynamic modeling of semi-planing air-cavity hulls. The current method is based on a linearized potential-flow theory for surface flows. The mathematical model description and parametric calculation results for a selected configuration with pressurized and open air cavities are presented.

A Study on Building of Underpass for Small Vehicles by Benefit and Cost Analysis (편익과 비용 분석을 통한 소형차전용지하차도 도입에 관한 연구)

  • PURPOSES : This study is to analysis for benefit and construction cost in underpass for small vehicles. METHODS : The study was performed using the traffic software VISSIM 5.20 for analysis on a variety of traffic conditions and analysed of benefits of changes through analysis of travel speed and travel time after modeling of existing underpass and small vehicle underpass. RESULTS : Results of this study, the benefits will be reduced by the introduction underpass for small vehicles were analyzed because heavy vehicles use the intersection above the underpass. However, it was required economic analysis considering both the benefits reduction and the construction costs reduction because it has the effect of reducing the construction cost. Showed that the difference in benefit changes depending on the v/c and heavy vehicles ratio and construction cost was difference by types of underpass. As a result of performing economic analysis with total benefits and construction cost, it was analyzed to be economical in underpass over a certain size. CONCLUSIONS : The result of this study are expected to be able to contribute to reviewing for feasibility due to the small vehicles underpass introduction and economic analysis. The study is case study to the underpass in Daegu. Therefore, the future requires the calculation of benefits reflect a wider range of traffic conditions and the economic analysis to construction cost calculation for various types of grad separation facilities.

Intention to Disclose Personal Information in LBS : Based on Privacy Calculus Perspective (스마트폰 위치기반서비스에서 정보제공의도 : 프라이버시 계산 관점을 중심으로)

  • LBS(Location-Based Service) is one of the smartphone application services which has been receiving great attention recently. Various applications of smartphone use LBS to provide innovative services. However, use of LBS raises privacy concerns because the location information of users is constantly exposed. Privacy calculus perspective attempts to understand the characteristics of the user's privacy. It is based on the risk-benefit analysis in the economics' perspective. That is, when the benefit expected through personal information disclosure is higher than risk, we are willing to provide personal information. This research suggested a research model based on the privacy calculus perspective to clarify the effect of information disclosure intention of smartphone LBS application users. Based on the main factors of privacy calculus, perception of privacy risk and privacy benefit, the relationship of the perceived value and the information disclosure intention was empirically analyzed by utilizing structural equation modeling(SEM) methodology. According to the results of the empirical analysis, it was found that all relations have statistically significant explanatory power except the relation between privacy concern and information disclosure intention. This study showed a strong evidence of antecedent factors based on privacy calculus of personal information disclosure in smartphone LBS applications.
