TCM has been used for many environmental impact assessments and many case studies in Korea. TCM was applied to urbvan areas and rolling terrains. But original TCM was developed for rural area, and this model could not reflect the characteristcs of these study sites. This paper analyzed the characteristics of TCM, and modified the algorithm of area source, and modified the vertical wind speed profile exponents and diffusion parameter to make it applicable in urban area. In the process of modification, an important error in area source calculation of original TCM program was found. So that was corrected as follows. $$ Before modification $QC = 0.79788456^*(0.5^*GRID)^**BA/(U(IA, IRUN)^*AA^*BA TCM09310$ After modification $QC = 0.79788456^*(500^*GRID)^**BA/(U(IA, IRUN)^*AA*BA) modified$ $$ Then original TCM and modified TCM-urban mode were compared, and it was found that predicted mean value by original TCM was 7 times higher than observed mean value. But mean value by modified TCM-urban mode was very similar to observed value.
In this paper, a modification of PISO algorithm based on standard k-ε turbulence model was proposed. The numerical technique used in this research is finite volume method, hybrid scheme for discretizing convection term, Euler implicit scheme for discretizing time term, and non-staggered grid. The basic idea of the modification of PISO algorithm is to perform an additional corrector stage for turbulence kinetic energy and dissipation rate to correct the inconsistence of flow and turbulence. In order to validate this algorithm, simulation of flow around a square cylinder (Re=3000) was performed in two-dimensional case. The results obtained from the proposed scheme show better agreement with those from the experiment than using original PISO algorithm in coherent velocity field.
The paper presents a simplified force-based seismic design procedure for the preliminary design of steel haunch retrofitting for the seismic upgrade of deficient RC frames. The procedure involved constructing a site-specific seismic design spectrum for the site, which is transformed into seismic base shear coefficient demand, using an applicable response modification factor, that defines base shear force for seismic analysis of the structure. Recent experimental campaign; involving shake table testing of ten (10), and quasi-static cyclic testing of two (02), 1:3 reduced scale RC frame models, carried out for the seismic performance assessment of both deficient and retrofitted structures has provided the basis to calculate retrofit-specific response modification factor Rretrofitted. The haunch retrofitting technique enhanced the structural stiffness, strength, and ductility, hence, increased the structural response modification factor, which is mainly dependent on the applied retrofit scheme. An additional retrofit effectiveness factor (ΩR) is proposed for the deficient structure's response modification factor Rdeficient, representing the retrofit effectiveness (ΩR=Rretrofitted /Rdeficient), to calculate components' moment and shear demands for the retrofitted structure. The experimental campaign revealed that regardless of the deficient structures' characteristics, the ΩR factor remains fairly the unchanged, which is encouraging to generalize the design procedure. Haunch configuration is finalized that avoid brittle hinging of beam-column joints and ensure ductile beam yielding. Example case study for the seismic retrofit designs of RC frames are presented, which were validated through equivalent lateral load analysis using elastic model and response history analysis of finite-element based inelastic model, showing reasonable performance of the proposed design procedure. The proposed design has the advantage to provide a seismic zone-specific design solution, and also, to suggest if any additional measure is required to enhance the strength/deformability of beams and columns.
This study analyzed the pressure patterns and local pressure of tall buildings with corner modifications (recessed and chamfered corner) using wind tunnel tests and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). POD can distinguish pressure patterns by POD mode and more dominant pressure patterns can be found according to the order of POD modes. Results show that both recessed and chamfered corners effectively reduced wind-induced responses. Additionally, unique effects were observed depending on the ratio of corner modification. Tall building models with recessed corners showed fluctuations in the approaching wind flow in the first POD mode and vortex shedding effects in the second POD mode. With large corner modification, energy distribution became small in the first POD mode, which shows that the effect of the first POD mode reduced. Among building models with chamfered corners, vortex shedding effects appeared in the first POD mode, except for the model with the highest ratio of corner modifications. The POD confirmed that both recessed and chamfered corners play a role in reducing vortex shedding effects, and the normalized power spectral density peak value of modes showing vortex shedding was smaller than that of the building model with a square section. Vortex shedding effects were observed on the front corner surfaces resulting from corner modification, as with the side surface. For buildings with recessed corners, the local pressure on corner surfaces was larger than that of side surfaces. Moreover, the average wind pressure was effectively reduced to 88.42% and 92.40% in RE1 on the windward surface and CH1 on the side surface, respectively.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to report the instrument modification and validation processes to make existing health belief model scales culturally appropriate for Korean Americans (KAs) regarding colorectal cancer (CRC) screening utilization. Methods: Instrument translation, individual interviews using cognitive interviewing, and expert reviews were conducted during the instrument modification phase, and a pilot test and a cross-sectional survey were conducted during the instrument validation phase. Data analyses of the cross-sectional survey included internal consistency and construct validity using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Results: The main issues identified during the instrument modification phase were (a) cultural and linguistic translation issues and (b) newly developed items reflecting Korean cultural barriers. Cross-sectional survey analyses during the instrument validation phase revealed that all scales demonstrate good internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha=.72~.88). Exploratory factor analysis showed that susceptibility and severity loaded on the same factor, which may indicate a threat variable. Items with low factor loadings in the confirmatory factor analysis may relate to (a) lack of knowledge about fecal occult blood testing and (b) multiple dimensions of the subscales. Conclusion: Methodological, sequential processes of instrument modification and validation, including translation, individual interviews, expert reviews, pilot testing and a cross-sectional survey, were provided in this study. The findings indicate that existing instruments need to be examined for CRC screening research involving KAs.

Gears, crucial components in modern precision machinery for power transmission mechanisms, are required to have low contacting noise with high torque transmission, which makes the use of gear-tooth profile modifications and gear-tooth surface crowning extremely efficient and valuable. Due to the shortcomings of current techniques, such as manual rectification, mechanical modification, and numerically controlled rectification, we propose a novel electrochemical gear-tooth profile modification method based on an artificial neural network control technique. The fundamentals of electrochemical tooth-profile modifications based on real-time control and a mathematical model of the process are discussed in detail. Due to the complex and uncertain relationships among the machining parameters of electrochemical tooth-profile modification processes, we used an artificial neural network to determine the required processing electric current as the tooth-profile modification requirements were supplied. The system was implemented and a practical example was used to demonstrate that this technology is feasible and has potential applications in the production of precision machinery.

This paper discuss about structure modification method of the reciprocating compressor to reduce its vibration and noise in small refrigeration system. The structure modification is applied using analytic FE models and then applying suggested Component Mode Synthesis(CMS) algorithms. The efficient CMS algorithms to a compressor's fixed base design problem are analytically tried and verified from some experiments.

There is a purpose of this study for the proposal of the optimum technique utilized for the vibration design initial step. The stiffened plate structure for the ship hull is made for analysis model. To begin with, dynamic characteristics of stiffened plate structure is analysed using FEM. Main vibrational mode of the structure is decided in the analytical result of FEM. The simplified equation on the natural frequency of the main vibrational mode is induced. Next, sensitivity analysis is carried out using the simplified equation, and rate of change of dynamic characteristics is calculated. Then, amount of design variable is calculated using this sensitivity value and optimum structural modification method. The change of natural frequency is made to be an objective function. Thickness of panel, cross section moment of stiffener and girder become a design variable. The validity of the optimization method using simplified equation is examined. It is shown that the result effective in the optimum modification for natural frequency of the stiffened plate structure.
This paper considers the value of warehousing contract under probabilistic demands. We consider a supply chain consisting of a supplier, a retailer and its third-party warehousing partner who provides the warehousing service to the retailer through an outsourcing contract. A typical contract is specified by initial space commitment and modification schedule. The retailer decides the order quantity for the supplier and space commitment for the outsourcing contract. Since there is close relationship between order quantity and space commitment to minimize the total cost including ordering cost, inventory carrying cost, shortage cost, and warehousing cost, we develop an analytical model under probabilistic demands, where the retailer can determine the optimal order size and space commitment level jointly. We found the closed-form optimum for a single-period case and the optimal conditions for a two-period case. To evaluate the value of contract flexibility for the two-period case, we compared the total cost under two policies; one with modification, under which the base commitment can be changed at the start of each period and the other without modification. From results of our numerical analysis, we showed that the modification policy is more cost-effective as the variability of demand increases.

The goal of this research is to reduce noise level of an outdoor unit of air conditioner by changing its dynamic characteristics using SDM (structural dynamics modification) technique. At first, the emitting noise was measured and analyzed. The measurement records show the most critical frequency components which influences on the noise level. Then it was tried to move the natural frequencies outside the critical frequency region by SDM. Since it is very difficult to get a reliable FE model of air conditioner, experimentally measured frequency response functions were used to derive sensitivities that are very important to obtain design changes. The positions of modification and the thickness of modifying structures were determined to improve the dynamic characteristics of air conditioner. The recommended design guideline to move its natural frequencies outside the targeting frequency range was obtained. Then in order to prove its effectiveness, the changed design was experimentally tested and found that the SDM result is very effective to reduce not only its vibration but also its emitting noise.
