  • Cold rolling mill process in steel works uses stands of rolls to flatten a strip to a desired thichness. At Pohang Iron and Steel Company (POSCO) in Pohang, Korea, precalculation determines the mill settings before a strip actually enters the mill and is done by an outdated mathematical model. A corrective neural network model is proposed to improve the accuracy of the roll force prediction. Additional variables to be fed to the network include the chemical composition of the coil, its coiling temperature and the aggregated amount of processed strips of each roll. The network was trained using a standard backpropagation with 2,277 process data collected form POSCO from March 1995, then was tested on the unseen 200 data from the same period. The combined model reduced the prediction error by 55.4% on average.

  • A basic experimental study has been carried out to find out the design parameters of fuel 2-staging atomizers in order to reduce nitrogen oxides(NOx) rate emitted from the steam boilers used the liquid fuel. The heavy fuel oil(B-Coil) and fuel 2-staging Y-jet twin-fluid atomizers were adopted in this study. The results of this paper were obtained from the real as well as the model scale atomizers. In the case of model atomizers test, NOx reduction rate was strongly dependent on the staged fuel rate, but it was weakly dependent on the injection hole arrangement and air swirl conditions. The real scale atomizers was designed and manufactured on the base of these test results, and those was mounted and operated in the real boiler generates 185 ton steam per an hour. The reduction rate of the model and real plant was reached 10∼30% of base NOx by atomizers. but dust was sharply increased in the low O$_2$combustion region of the real plant.

  • Magnetic resonance wireless power transfer (WPT) in the marine environment can be utilized in many applications. However, energy loss in seawater through eddy loss (EL) is another consideration other than WPT in air. Therefore, the effect of system parameters on electric field intensity (EFI) needs to be measured and ELs calculated to optimize such a system. In this paper, the usually complicated analytical expression of EFI is simplified to the product of frequency, current, coil turns, and a coefficient to analyze the eddy current loss (ECL). Moreover, as the calculation of ECL through volume integral is time-consuming, the equivalent eddy loss impedance (EELI) is proposed to help designers determine the optimum parameters quickly. Then, a power distribution model in seawater is conceived based on the introduction of EELI. An optimization flow chart is also proposed according to this power distribution model, from which a prototype system is developed which can deliver 100 W at 90% efficiency with a gap of 30 mm and a frequency of 107.1 kHz.

  • Dimensional accuracy of hot coil is improved by precise control of thickness profiles, flatness, width and winding profile. Especially, precise width control is important because yield could be increased significantly. Precise width control can be improved by predicting the amount of width spread. The purpose of this study is to develop the advanced prediction model for width spread in hot finish rolling for controlling width precisely. FE-simulations were performed to investigate the effect of process variables on width spread such as reduction ratio, forward and backward tension and initial width at each stand. From the statistical analysis of simulated data, advanced model was developed based on the existing models for strip width spread. The experimental hot rolling trials showed that newly developed model provided fairly accurate predictions on the strip width spread during the whole hot finishing rolling process.

  • To obtain thermal performance data, an experiment was performed with the two selected thermosyphon systems. The system parameters obtained by experimental data were used to perform TRNSYS simulation and verified TRNSYS model of thermosyphon solar hot water system. The thermosyphon solar hot water system was TYPE 145 which is modified from non-linear model. This model can describe heat exchange type and non-linear efficiency equation. It is possible to analyze the annual energy rate with efficiency equation and system specification. In this paper, we could compare the annual performance of the coil heat exchanger with that of the tank-in-tank heat exchanger. Under the same efficiency and parameter, heat exchange, drain, initial tank temperature, ratio of tank volume over collector area(V/Ac), regional annual performance rating were performed.

  • Numerical method for analyzing the reading process in magnetic recording system is described. Hysteresis characteristics must be included in numerical analysis not only recording process but also reading process because of hysteretic behavior of recording media. Algorithm which is consisted of finite clement method for numerical analysis and Preisach model considered to be more appropriate method than Stoner-Wohlfarth model with spin curling mode for describing hysteresis characteristics is constructed. Equations to calculate waveform of reproduced voltage is proposed. Then, this is applied to perpendicular magnetic recording systems with pole type head and double layer media. Waveform of magnetic flux density and reproduced voltage induced in head coil is obtained. If the recording current increase in recording process, magnitude of reproduced voltage in reproducing process saturates. From this saturation curve, value of current which produce maximum voltage can be obtained.

  • Radio Frequency (RF) coils in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems interact with a patient's tissues, resulting in the absorption of RF energy by the tissues. The presence of an electrically conducting medical implant may concentrate the RF energy and causes tissue heating near the implant devices. Here we present a novel design for a medical lead to reduce this undesired heating. Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), an indicator of heating, was calculated. Remcom XFdtd software was used to calculate the peak SAR distribution (1g and 10 g) in a realistic model of the human body. The model contained a medical lead that was exposed to RF magnetic fields at 64 MHz (1.5 T MRI), 128 MHz (3 T MRI) and 300 MHz (7 T MRI) using a model of an MR birdcage body coil. Our results demonstrate that, our proposed design of adding nails to the medical lead can significantly reduce the SAR for different MRI systems.

  • 80pF capacitive couplers were connected to six 6.6kV motor model coil terminals. The voltage applied to the coils were 3.81kv, 4.76 kV and 6.6kV, respectively. These stator coils have various types of artificial insulation defects such as large voids, semi-conductive coating damage and strand insulation fault. Digital PD detector(PDD) and turbine generator analyzer(TGA) were used to measure PD activity. TGA summarizes each plot with two quantities such as the normalized quantity number(NQN) and the peak PD magnitude(Qm). The PD levels in PD were measured with a conventional digital PD detector. Most of the defect mechanism of large motor stator winding can be associated with PD patterns such as internal and slot discharges. PD patterns coincide with PDD and TGA. These instruments have an input bandwidth of 40-400kHz and 0.1-350MHz. Surge testing detects faults in inter-turn winding of high voltage motor model coils.

  • Magnetically levitated (Maglev) vehicles maintain a constant air gap between guideway and car bogie, and thereby achieves non-contact riding. Since the straightness and the flatness of the guideway directly affect the stability of levitation as well as the ride comfort, it is necessary to monitor the status of the guideway and to alert the train operators to any abnormal conditions. In order to develop a signal processing algorithm that extracts guideway irregularities from sensor data, virtual testing using a simulation model would be convenient for analyzing the exact effects of any input as long as the model describes the actual system accurately. Simulation model can also be used as an estimation model. In this paper, we develop a state-space dynamic model of a maglev vehicle system, running on the guideway that contains jumps. This model contains not only the dynamics of the vehicle, but also the descriptions of the power amplifier, the anti-aliasing filter and the sampling delay. A test rig is built for the validation of the model. The test rig consists of a small-scale maglev vehicle, tracks with artificial jumps, and various sensors measuring displacements, accelerations, and coil currents. The experimental data matches well with those from the simulation model, indicating the validity of the model.
