  • The mechanical limited slip differential (LSD) in vehicles is being replaced by the electromagnetic LSD because of its fast response and better active control characteristics. The coil housing made of STS 304 is one of the most important parts in the solenoid assembly of the electromagnetic LSD. High geometrical accuracy is a prerequisite for the manufacture of such coil housings, but precision machining is difficult because of the use of STS 304 thin plate and the variance in machining variables. The aim of this study is to optimize the mean and variance of the shape accuracy in the coil housing by finding a robust solution for the machining process conditions. The mean and standard deviation of the jaw contact pressure, cutting speed, and feed rate are considered to be the major parameters for minimizing the geometrical mean and variance. The response surface model based on the second-order Taylor series is combined together to minimize the mean and variance of the shape accuracy of the coil housing.

  • This paper presents an optimal design of a permanent magnet actuator(PMA) using a parallel genetic algorithm. Dynamic characteristics of permanent magnet actuator model are analyzed by coupled electromagnetic-mechanical finite element method. Dynamic characteristics of PMA such as holding force, operating time, and peak current are obtained by no load test and compared with the analyzed results by coupled finite element method. The permanent magnet actuator model is optimized using a parallel genetic algorithm. Some design parameters of vertical length of permanent magnet, horizontal length of plunger, and depth of permanent magnet actuator are predefined for an optimal design of permanent magnet actuator model. Furthermore dynamic characteristics of the optimized permanent magnet actuator model are analyzed by coupled finite element method. A displacement of plunger, flowing current of the coil, force of plunger, and velocity of plunger of the optimized permanent magnet actuator model are compared with the results of a primary permanent magnet actuator model.

  • It was proposed to identify Thiele Small Parameters for loudspeaker attached to closed-box using known dynamic mass of moving parts. Also, enhanced PSPICE circuit model for closed-box loudspeaker system was proposed to more accurately simulate real closed-box loudspeaker system. Frequency dependent parameters were used to model voice coil inductor. Acoustic pressure response curves and electrical impedance curves were simulated and investigated by PSPICE circuit model according to compensation filter's parameters. Finally, proposed method is expected to be utilized for identification of pseudo Thiele Small parameters of microspeaker.

  • A whole-body voxel model of a 7-year-old male volunteer was developed from 384 axial magnetic resonance images (MRIs). The MRIs were acquired with intervals of 3 mm for the entire body in a body coil. In order to reduce the MRI acquisition time for the child, the repetition and echo times under T1 weighted image were chosen to be 566 ms and 8 ms, respectively. The MRIs were classified according to 30 types of tissues with known electrical parameters. The developed voxel model was adjusted to the physical average of 7-year-old Korean boys. The body weight of the adjusted model, calculated with the mass tissue densities, is within a 6% difference from the 50th percentile weight.

  • Naval ships are particularly required to maintain acoustic and magnetic silence due to their operational characteristics. Among them, underwater magnetic field signals derived by ships are likely to be detected by threats such as surveillance systems and mine systems at close distance. In order to increase the survivability of the vessels, various techniques for reducing the magnetic field signal are being studied and it is necessary to consider not only the magnitude of the magnetic field signal but also the gradient of it. In this paper, we use the commercial electromagnetic finite element analysis tool to predict the induced magnetic field signal of ship's scaled model, and arrange the degaussing coil. And the optimum degaussing current of the coil was derived by applying the particle swarm optimization algorithm considering the gradient constraint. The validity of the optimal degaussing technique is verified analytically by comparing the magnetic field signals after the degaussing with or without gradient constraint.

  • To evaluate the newly designed gastroduodenal coil catheter:in-vitro test. The coil catheter that we made in our laboratory was 150 cm. The coil that is made of stainless steel wire was composed 1.3 mm inner diameter and this coil spring was covered with heat-shrinkable polyethylene tube. To measure the length under fluorocopy, 8 radiopaque marks were attached at 5 cm, 10 cm, 11 cm, 12 cm, 13 cm, 14 cm, 15 cm, 20 cm apart from distal end of the catheter and 6, 2, 1 pores were made at 7 cm, 13 cm, 19 cm apart from the distal end. Radio-opacity and the amount of injected contrast was investigated in formerly used 5 Fr. vessel catheter, which is possible in measuring length, and newly designed coil catheter. Film density was tested for radio-opacity with autodensitometer. For measuring the volume of injected salin, the catheter was located in the acryl box(26 cm, 3 cm, 16 cm) that divided into 4 chambers. After injection 50 cc of contrast with autoinjector, the contrast's quantity in each chamber was measured with and without over the guide wire. Radio-opacity was 0.51 in 5 Fr. vessel catheter, 0.31 in newly made catheter. The amount of injected contrast was measured. In case of 5 Fr. vessel catheter, the amount was 99.5% from the distal part, there was no difference between with and without the guide wire. Otherwise, using a coil catheter, the pacentage the ejected saline was 1.17%, 18.8%, 41.8%, 38.2% from the distal part with the guide wire, 19.5%, 32.6%, 27.7%, 20.3% without the guide wire. Compare with formerly established catheter, this new coil catheter is easy to measure the length thanks to easy confirming under fluoroscopy and excellent in injecting contrast. Therefore, newly designed gastrointestinal catheter seems to be useful in gastrointestinal intervention procedure.

  • Cold rolling mill process in steel works uses stands of rolls to flatten a strip to a desired thickness. At cold rolling mill process, precalculation determines the mill settings before a strip actually enters the mill and is done by an outdated mathematical model. A corrective neural network model is proposed to improve the accuracy of the roll force prediction. Additional variables to be fed to the network include the chemical composition of the coil, its coiling temperature and the aggregated amount of processed strips of each roll. The network was trained using a standard backpropagation with 4,944 process data collected from no.1 cold rolling mill process from March 1995 through December 1995, then was tested on the unseen 1,586 data from Jan 1996 through April 1996. The combined model reduced the prediction error by 32.8% on average.

  • A finite element aerodynamic model that can be used to analyse flutter instability of long span bridges in the time domain is presented. This approach adopts a simplified quasi-steady formulation of the wind forces neglecting the vortex shedding effects. The governing equations used are effective only for reduced velocities $V^*$ sufficiently great: this is generally acceptable for long-span suspension bridges and, then, the dependence of the wind forces expressions of the flutter derivatives can be neglected. The procedure describes the mechanical response in an accurate way, taking into account the non-linear geometry effects (large displacements and large strains) and considering also the compressed locked coil strands instability. The time-dependence of the inertia force due to fluid structure interaction is not considered. The numerical examples are performed on the three-dimensional finite element model of the Great Belt East Bridge (DK). A mode frequency analysis is carried out to validate the model and the results show good agreement with the experimental measurements of the full bridge aeroelastic model in the wind tunnel tests. Significant parameters affecting bridge response are introduced and accurately investigated.

  • The superconducting synchronous machine(S.S.M) including generator and motor has different electromagnetic structure from the conventional machine. With the help of superconductor having much higher operating current density than normal conductor, S.S.M can eliminate most of iron core filling inside of the conventional machine. This air-cored structure could be analysed and designed theoretically based on 2-dimensional(2-D) magnetic field distribution assuming that the windings are extended infinitely toward the axial direction. However the actual structure of S.S.M has the end regions interconnecting the straight parts of the same cross-section with the 2-D model. Therefore, this actual 3-D model has smaller field distribution than the 2-D model. In this paper, we consider the effect of the end regions on the output of a HTS model motor and suggest more accurate design approach through comparison of 2-D and 3-D magnetic field analysis.

  • In this paper, finite element modeling was performed for vibration analysis of a rotor system installed in sunroof motor, and analysis process was developed for natural frequency and unbalance response analysis. At the same time, to reduce analysis modeling error caused by the difference between analysis and measured values, finite element model updating was conducted using an optimization algorithm, i.e. hybrid genetic algorithm and simulated annealing (HGASA) method. For this end experimental modal test was carried out and by using the measured frequency response function (FRF), model updating was performed considering both cases where core coil was removed and included. And acceptable result was obtained. Also, dynamic property coefficient of bush bearing which influences vibration response of the rotor system was estimated.
