  • Fire characteristics of a typical apartment building in Korea was studied through full scale experiment and zone model simulation. The fire was ignited at the living room and allowed to spread to other parts of a single unit in a five storied apartment building. Various data including temperatures, species concentrations, and images were collected in the experiment. A zone model(CFAST) was used to analyze the same apartment building that represents the average households in Korea. The results were compared with a full scale experiments. While CFAST allows one compartment involved with fire, the experiment allowed the fire to spread to other compartments. Therefore, the comparison between experimental data and Zone-Model data is valid until the living-room fire spread to other parts of the apartment. Flashover occurred at approximately 380 seconds in a fire experiment, and at approximately 420 seconds in Zone-Model. Based on all of data between experimental data and Zone-Model data, it is concluded that the safe escape time is about 250 seconds.

  • The data model for structural experiment information formally organizes the information involved in the structural experiments before the data repository using the data model is implemented. The data model is particularly required for the data repositories for the large-scale structural experiment information and the general information for various types of experiments, such as the NEEShub Project Warehouse developed by NEES. This paper proposes criteria for evaluating the organization and the use of design model for structural experiment information. The term of AVE(attribute value existence) indicates the ratio of attributes who values exist in objects, and then used for defining the Attribute AVE for the use of an attribute, the Class AVE for a class, the Class Level AVE for a class including its lower-level classes, the Project AVE for a project including all classes at class levels, and the Data Model AVE for a data model including projects. These criteria are applied to the projects in the NEES data model, and it is successively possible to numerically describe the evaluation of the use of classes and attributes in the data model.

  • The environmental education with ideal teaching tools (e.g., a small-scaled experimental kit) is essential for raising the public's, especially student's, awareness of many environmental issues. This study was undertaken to develop a do-it-yourself model instrument of acid rain and estimating its applicability to the environmental education. Our novel model tool consists of a body (17 cm width, 6 cm depth, and 17 cm height), an acid gas injector, acid four rain reservoirs, and a drop supply pump. An alternative model instrument that can be more readily assembled was also suggested. Based on our novel approach, we carried out several model experiments with educatees (i.e., high school and college students, and adults). The results of questionnaires indicated that educatees achieved a very deep understanding of acid rain through an experienced model experiment. A 77 to 89% of educatees experienced the reappearance experiment of acid rain by our model instrument felt that it was very useful as a teaching tool of environmental education.

  • This study investigates the uplift capacity of a single vertical belled pile buried at shallow depth in dry sand. The laboratory model experiments are conducted with different pile-tip angles and relative densities. In addition, image and FEM analyses are performed to observe the failure surface of the belled pile for different pile-tip angles and relative densities. Accordingly, the uplift capacity and failure angle in the failure surface of the belled pile were found to depend on the belled pile-tip angle and relative density. A predictive model for the uplift capacity of the belled pile was proposed considering the relative density and belled pile-tip angle based on a previous limit equilibrium equation. To validate the applicability of the proposed model, the values calculated using the proposed and previous models were compared to those obtained through a laboratory model experiment. The proposed model had the best agreement with the laboratory model experiment.

  • An experimenal study on flight control of high-speed AEV(Aero-levitation Electric Vehicle) scale model in wind-tunnel is conducted. The AEV is to fly at very low altitude in predesigned track so that it is always under the wing-in-ground effect. The experiment is intended to fly the scale model to follow the predesigned altitude schedule while holding its attitude (pitch, roll, and yaw). Especially, the altitude changes for climb, cruise, and descent with constant pitch angle are most important maneuvers. The experiment shows that the required mission flights can be performed with appropriate sensors, processors, and actuators.

  • The nonlinear analysis was perforned for a 2-bay 2-story moment-resisting reinforced concrete plane frame with seismic detail using KDARC 2D program. The analytical models consist of the material model, the member model, the hysteretic model, and the damage model etc. The conclusion based on the results of analysis is as following. : (1) Story shear-displacement relationship is similar to the experiment result but from the energy point of view, the analysis relationship is similar to the experiment result but from the energy point of view, the analysis result was different from the experiment result. (2) Plastic hinges were found to occur mainly in beams at first story while all the columns had plastic hinges throughout the structure. (3) Failure mode is a little different from experiment result in the yielding mechanism. (4) Damage index isabout 0.25. This means that the degree of damage is moderate and can be repairable.

  • Approximate optimization has become popular in engineering field such as MDO and Crash analysis which is time consuming. To accomplish efficient approximate optimization, accuracy of approximate model is very important. As surrogate model, Kriging have been widely used approximating highly nonlinear system . Because Kriging employs interpolation method, it is adequate for deterministic computer simulation. Because there are no random errors and measurement errors in deterministic computer simulation, instead of classical DOE ,space filling experiment design which fills uniformly design space should be applied. In this work, various space filling designs such as maximin distance design, maximum entropy design are reviewed. And new design improving maximum entropy design is suggested and compared.

  • Diallel analysis was conducted with FI's derived from crossing in all combinations without reciprocals among six rice varieties; three tropical japonica and three temperate japonica varieties, with different traits associated with panicle and flag leaf. Epistasis was observed in the number of primary branches (PB) per panicle and of spikelets per panicle, while flag leaf length, flag leaf color, PB length and neck node thickness were explained with the additive-dominance model. The estimated genetic mode of flag leaf length and PB length was a positive complete dominance model with high heritability, and that of flag leaf color and neck node thickness was an incomplete dominance model. In particular, tropical japonica varieties with low-tillering and heavy-panicle appear to have higher number of dominant genes for flag leaf length and PB length than temperate japonica varieties.

  • The Metropolitan Tracer Experiment (METREX) was performed over the Washington, D.C. area using two inert, non-deposition perfluorocarbon gases for over 1 year period (November 1983∼December 1984). Two perfluorocarbon gas tracers (PDCH, PMCH) were released simultaneously at intervals of every 36 hours for 6 hours, regardless of the meteorological conditions in metropolitan area. Samples were collected continuously for 8 hours at a central downtown and two adjacent suburban locations. Monthly air samples were collected at 93 sites across the whole region (at urban, suburban, and rural locations). The purpose of this study is to simulate INPUFF and ISCST model using METREX data, and to compare calculated and observed concentrations. In the case of INPUFF simulation, two meteorological input data were used. One is result data from wind field model which was calculated by diagnostic wind model (DWM), the other is meteorological data observed at single station. Here, three kinds of model calculation were performed during April and July 1984; they include (1) INPUFF model using DWM data (2) INPUFF model using single meteorological data (3) ISCST model. The monthly average concentration data were used for statistic analysis and to draw their horizontal distribution patterns. Eight-hour-averaged concentration was used to describe movement of puff during the episode period. The results showed that the concentrations calculated by puff model (INPUFF) were better than plume model (ISCST). In the case of puff model (INPUFF), a model run using wind field data produced better results than that derived by single meteorological data.
