  • Numerical calculations have beee made of the effect of grain size on the three-dimensional carrier density, the quantum efficiency, and the AMI efficiency of 30$\mu$m polycrystalliue silicon p-n junction solar cells. Quantum efficiencies calculated for the polycrystalline silicon solar cells are compared to the monocrystalline cases. An efficiency of 12% can theoretically be obtained with grain size 100$\mu$m, and 6% for 5$\mu$m grains.

  • Recently, the nanofluid which is stably dispersing or suspending of nanoparticles in the conventional heat transfer fluids (HTF) such as water and ethylene glycol has attracted significant interests as a solar thermal energy absorbing medium because they have excellent absorption and thermophysical properties compared to the typical HTF. In the present study, the efficiency of nanofluid-based flat-plate solar collector is analytically evaluated using the theoretical model of energy balance equation. The theoretical model considers the incoming solar radiation as a volumetric heat generation and the water-based single wall carbon nanohorn(SWCNH) nanofluid is used as a solar energy absorbing medium. Finally, the efficiency of nanofluid-based collector is calculated according to the volume fraction of SWCNH using the analytical solution.

  • DMFC(Direct Methanol Fuel Cell) is one of promising candidates for power sources of small mobile IT devices like notebook, cell phone, and so on. Efficient operation of fuel cell system is very important for long-sustained power supply because of limited fuel tank size. It is necessary to investigate operation characteristics of fuel cell stack for optimal control of DMFC system. The generated voltage was modeled according to various operating condition; methanol concentration, stack temperature, and load current. It is inevitable for methanol solution at anode to cross over to cathode through MEA(membrane electrode assembly), which reduces the system efficiency and increases fuel consumption. In this study, optimal operation conditions are proposed by analyzing stack performance model, cross-over phenomenon, and system efficiency.

  • The precise and reliable loss model for induction motor and converter system is very important in order to predict the efficiency performance of variable speed drives. This paper proposes an accurate loss model of induction motor and converter system. The motor losses, such as stator and rotor copper loss, core loss and stray loss, are considered for fundamental and harmonic frequencies. Also considered are the skin effect on rotor resistance, temperature effect on bath stator and rotor resistance, magnetizing inductance saturation, and friction and windage loss. All the above features are incorporated in a synchronous frame dynamic d-q equivalent circuit. The converter system, consisting of a diode rectifier and PWM transistor inverter, is modeled accurately for conduction and switching losses. Validity of the models, in both steady state and transient conditions, is verified by simulations.

  • This paper proposes a R&D project performance measurement model for private firms combining balanced scorecard (BSC) and data envelopment analysis (DEA). The efficiency of R&D projects is measured in terms of each of the three perspectives of BSC by using DEA : the internal process perspective (DEA-P), the customer perspective (DEA-C), and the financial perspective (DEA-F). The performance indicators of the three perspectives of BSC are considered as outputs of the corresponding DEA models. To provide strategic implications for R&D planning, we also propose the R&D project performance matrices composed of two different types of efficiency dimensions. The proposed model is expected to be fruitfully utilized for R&D performance measurement of private firms.

  • Three-dimensional experimental analysis was conducted in the pulverizer simplified isothermal model. The experiment model was constructed on a 1/3.5 scale of 500MW pulverizer. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of design parameters on the pulverized coal separator efficiency. Where used pulverized coal separator design parameters are guide vane angle, static classifier angle, dynamic classifier rpm. Taguchi method was used to find the effective design parameters related to pulverized coal separator efficiency. The results of the experiment showed that guide vane angle and dynamic classifier rpm were the design key parameters. In addition to the total number of experiment cases were reduced by Taguchi method.

  • In addition to the development of micro hydro turbine, the challenge in micro hydro turbine design as sustainable hydro devices is focused on the optimization of turbine runner blade which have decisive effect on the turbine performance to reach higher efficiency. A multi-objective optimization method to optimize the performance of runner blade of propeller turbine for micro turbine has been studied. For the initial design of planar blade cascade, singularity distribution method and the combination of the Bezier curve parametric technology is used. A non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II(NSGA II) is developed based on the multi-objective optimization design method. The comparision with model test show that the blade charachteristics is optimized by NSGA-II has a good efficiency and load distribution. From model test and scale up calculation, the maximum prototype efficiency of the runner blade reaches as high as 90.87%.

  • In order to obtain high efficiency and low resistance droplet separation apparatus, axial vane type gas-liquid separators with different guide vanes were designed, and the RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model as well as discrete phase model (DPM) were used to investigate the flow pattern inside the separators. It was shown that the tangential velocity distribution under different guide vanes have Rankine vortex characteristics, pressure distribution exhibits a high similarity which value becomes big as the increase of the blade outlet angle and the decrease of the guide vane numbers. The increase of the guide vane numbers and the decrease of the blade outlet angle could make separation improve significantly. The separation efficiency is almost 100% when the droplet diameter is bigger than $40{\mu}m$.

  • The Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) utilized in Honda's Civic Hybrid Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system was developed with the aim of making every component lighter, more compact and more efficient than those in the former model. To reduce energy loss, inverter efficiency was increased by fine patterning of the Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) chips, 12V DC-DC converter efficiency was increased by utilizing soft-switching, and the internal resistance of the IMA battery was lowered by modifying the electrodes and the current collecting structure. These improvements reduced the amount of heat generated by the unit components and made it possible to combine the previously separated Power Control Unit (PCU) and battery cooling systems into a single system. Consolidation of these two cooling circuits into one has reduced the volume of the newly developed IPU by 42% compared to the former model.

  • In this work, a theoretical model has been formulated which allows the study of the scavenging efficiencies of aerosol particles by the rain drops. Aerosol particles are scavenged by the simultaneous brownian diffusion, interception and inertial impaction force. In addition the calculations based on the collision efficiency model are carried out for the collision of aerosol particles with diameter range 0.01~30 $mu extrm{m}$ and rain drops with diameter 0.02$\times$$2^{n/3}$(n=1, 2, …, 17)cm. The results indicate that: (1) the below-cloud scavenging affects mainly the coarse particles (>3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$), the fine particles remaining almost unchanged; (2) the scavenging efficiencies by below-cloud in the heavy rain (rain intensity, 10 mm/hr) surpass the efficiency found in the drizzle rain (rain intensity, 1 mm/hr).
