One of the main shortcomings in the current passive base isolation system is lack of adaptability. The recent research and development of a novel adaptive seismic isolator based on magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) material has created an opportunity to add adaptability to base isolation systems for civil structures. The new MRE based base isolator is able to significantly alter its shear modulus or lateral stiffness with the applied magnetic field or electric current, which makes it a competitive candidate to develop an adaptive base isolation system. This paper aims at exploring suitable control algorithms for such adaptive base isolation system by developing a close-loop semi-active control system for a building structure equipped with MRE base isolators. The MRE base isolator is simulated by a numerical model derived from experimental characterization based on the Bouc-Wen Model, which is able to describe the force-displacement response of the device accurately. The parameters of Bouc-Wen Model such as the stiffness and the damping coefficients are described as functions of the applied current. The state-space model is built by analyzing the dynamic property of the structure embedded with MRE base isolators. A Lyapunov-based controller is designed to adaptively vary the current applied to MRE base isolator to suppress the quake-induced vibrations. The proposed control method is applied to a widely used benchmark base-isolated structure by numerical simulation. The performance of the adaptive base isolation system was evaluated through comparison with optimal passive base isolation system and a passive base isolation system with optimized base shear. It is concluded that the adaptive base isolation system with proposed Lyapunov-based semi-active control surpasses the performance of other two passive systems in protecting the civil structures under seismic events.

This paper presents the development of real-time estimation and control details for a computer vision-based robot control method. This is accomplished using a sequential estimation scheme that permits placement of these points in each of the two-dimensional image planes of monitoring cameras. Estimation model is developed based on a model that generalizes know 4-axis Scorbot manipulator kinematics to accommodate unknown relative camera position and orientation, etc. This model uses six uncertainty-of-view parameters estimated by the iteration method. The method is tested experimentally in two ways : First the validity of estimation model is tested by using the self-built test model. Second, the practicality of the presented control method is verified in performing 4-axis manipulator's assembly task. These results show that control scheme used is precise and robust. This feature can open the door to a range of application of multi-axis robot such as deburring and welding.

This paper proposes the generalized structure of a model-based disturbance rejection controller called a Robust Internal-loop Compensator (RIC). The framework consists of the RIC in the internal-loop to eliminate disturbances and a feedback controller in the external-loop to achieve nominal control performance. As the main contribution of this paper, we redefine the design problem of the RIC as a regulation control problem, then show that this new definition with the RIC structure provides more design flexibility and less implementation constraints. This is verified through a comparative structural analysis with Disturbance Observer (DOB) and Adaptive Robust Control (ARC). Two design examples of the RIC are given, along with practical issues that should be considered in the design procedure. The proposed framework is demonstrated by simulations of a rotary-type motor and experiments with a linear-type motor system.

As the Internet real-time multimedia applications increases, the bandwidth available to TCP connections is oppressed by the UDP traffic, result in the performance of overall system is extremely deteriorated. Therefore, developing a new transmission protocol is necessary. The TCP-friendly algorithm is an example satisfying this necessity. The TCP-Friendly Rate Control (TFRC) is an UDP-based protocol that controls the transmission rate that is based on the available round trip time (RTT) and the packet loss rate (PLR). In the data transmission processing, transmission rate is determined based on the conditions of the previous transmission period. If the one-step ahead predicted values of the control factors are available, the performance will be improved significantly. This paper proposes a prediction model of transmission rate control factors that will be used in the transmission rate control, which improves the performance of the networks. The model developed through this research is predicting one-step ahead variables of RTT and PLR. A multiplayer perceptron neural network is used as the prediction model and Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm is used for the training. The values of RTT and PLR were collected using TFRC protocol in the real system. The obtained prediction model is validated using new data set and the results show that the obtained model predicts the factors accurately.

A novel neural network model, termed the standard neural network model (SNNM), similar to the nominal model in linear robust control theory, is suggested to facilitate the synthesis of controllers for delayed (or non-delayed) nonlinear systems composed of neural networks. The model is composed of a linear dynamic system and a bounded static delayed (or non-delayed) nonlinear operator. Based on the global asymptotic stability analysis of SNNMs, Static state-feedback controller and dynamic output feedback controller are designed for the SNNMs to stabilize the closed-loop systems, respectively. The control design equations are shown to be a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) which can be easily solved by various convex optimization algorithms to determine the control signals. Most neural-network-based nonlinear systems with time delays or without time delays can be transformed into the SNNMs for controller synthesis in a unified way. Two application examples are given where the SNNMs are employed to synthesize the feedback stabilizing controllers for an SISO nonlinear system modeled by the neural network, and for a chaotic neural network, respectively. Through these examples, it is demonstrated that the SNNM not only makes controller synthesis of neural-network-based systems much easier, but also provides a new approach to the synthesis of the controllers for the other type of nonlinear systems.

This paper presents an application study of a model predictive control based commercial package PCTP to real chemical processes. The first case study concerns a product purity control of a splitter process which distillates styrene from undesired component ethyl-benzene produced from ethyl-benzene dehydrogenation reaction. The second case study is about a temperature control of ethyl-benzene dehydrogenation reactor and an excess oxygen control of the fired heater. Optimum control structure for MPC application is developed for each case study. The application results show a significant improvement in control performance and stability.

In this paper, We described the method which developed the optimal control system for air separation unit to change production rates frequently and rapidly. Control models of the process were developed from actual plant data using subspace identification method which is developed by many researchers in resent years. The model consist of a series connection of linear dynamic block and static nonlinear block (Wiener model). The model is controlled by model based predictive controller. In MPC the input is calculated by on-line optimization of a performance index based on predictions by the model, subject to possible constraints. To calculate the optimal the performance index, conditions are expressed by LMI(Linear Matrix Inequalities). In order to access at the Bailey DCS system, we applied the OPC server and developed the Client program. The OPC sever is a device which can access Bailey DCS system. The Client program is developed based on the Matlab language for easy calculation, data simulation and data logging. Using this program, we can apply the optimal input to the DCS system at real time.

This article deals with the problem of designing a robust algorithm for the motion control of robot manipulator whose nonlinear dynamics contain various uncertainties. To ensure high performance of control system, a model-based feedforward compensation with continuous robust control has been developed. The control structure based on the deterministic approach consists of two parts : the nominal control law is first introduced to stabilize the system without uncertainties, then a robust nonlinear control law is adopted to compensate for both the resulting errors(or structured uncertainties) and unstructured uncertainties. The uncertainties assumed in this study are bounded by polynomials in the Euclidean norms of system states with known bounding coefficients. The presented control scheme is relatively simple as well as computationally efficient. With a feasible class of desired trajectories, the proposed control law provides sufficient criteria which guarantee that all possible responses of the closed-loop system are uniformly ultimately bounded in the presence of uncertainties. Therefore, the control algorithm proposed is shown to be robust with respect to the involved uncertainties.
This paper introduces a macroblock-based rate control algorithm using the neural classifier based in Self Organization feature Maps (SOFM). In contrast to the conventional rate control methods based on the mathematical rate distortion (RD) model and the feedback regression, proposed method can actively adapt to the rapid-varying image characteristics by establishing the global model for bitrate control and by using the SOFM based neural classifier to manage that model. Proposed rate control algorithm has 0.2 dB ~ 0.6 dB better performances than MPEG-4 macroblock-based rate control algorithm by evaluating with the encoded Peak Signal to Noise Ratios while maintaining similar overall computational complexity.
This paper presents a new linear-matrix-inequality-based intelligent digital redesign (LMI-based IDR) technique to match the states of the analog and the digital T-S fuzzy control systems at the intersampling instants as well as the sampling ones. The main features of the proposed technique are: 1) the affine control scheme is employed to increase the degree of freedom; 2) the fuzzy-model-based periodic control is employed; and the control input is changed n times during one sampling period; 3) The proposed IDR technique is based on the approximately discretized version of the T-S fuzzy system; but its discretization error vanishes as n approaches the infinity. 4) some sufficient conditions involved in the state matching and the stability of the closed-loop discrete-time system can be formulated in the LMIs format.
