Vegetative and Male Reproductive Anatomy of Laurencia intercalaris sp. nov. (Rhodomelaceae, Rhodophyta) in Korea

  • The vegetative and male reproductive anatomy of a marine alga, Laurencia intercalaris sp. nov. (Rhodomelaceae, Rhodophyta), is described from subtidal habitats of eastern and southern Korea. This species has terete thalli with entangled fibrous holdfasts and regularly alternate branching of ultimate branchlets, and is inseparable from L. okamurae Yamada on the basis of habit. Vegetative axial cells produce a trichoblast and four pericentral cells in an alternating sequence. Spermatangia are produced intercalary or subterminally from one of two laterals on suprabasal cells of trichoblasts arising from axial cells in apical pits of branchlets. The other lateral remains sterile. In this sterile lateral, budding-like regeneration occurs on older segments that are oabscised. Comparison is made with other related Laurencia species, particularly those with terete thalli. The vegetative anatomy and the regeneration in sterile laterals of male trichoblasts, with the mode of spermatangial formation, distinguish the new species from previously described species of Laurencia including L. okamurae.

Engineering and Application of Zinc Finger Proteins and TALEs for Biomedical Research

  • Engineered DNA-binding domains provide a powerful technology for numerous biomedical studies due to their ability to recognize specific DNA sequences. Zinc fingers (ZF) are one of the most common DNA-binding domains and have been extensively studied for a variety of applications, such as gene regulation, genome engineering and diagnostics. Another novel DNA-binding domain known as a transcriptional activator-like effector (TALE) has been more recently discovered, which has a previously undescribed DNA-binding mode. Due to their modular architecture and flexibility, TALEs have been rapidly developed into artificial gene targeting reagents. Here, we describe the methods used to design these DNA-binding proteins and their key applications in biomedical research.

자동차 연료 펌프용 BLDC 모터의 센서리스 기동 및 연료 압력 제어 (Sensorless Starting Method and Fuel Pressure Control of BLDC Motor for Fuel Pump of Vehicle)

  • High efficiency operation is required for motors of vehicle to increase fuel efficiency due to the regulation of exhaust gas. This paper presents a control method of fuel pressure to increase fuel efficiency and a sensorless control method of BLDC motor to get higher efficiency than conventional brushed DC motor. Initial rotor position of BLDC motor is detected from current value that is occurred by test voltage pulse and rotor is accelerated by defined sequence to enter sensorless operation mode. The algorithm to control flow rate of fuel pump uses PI controller that is control motor speed to maintain the target fuel pressure commanded by ECU.

Scattering of Noble Gas Ions from a Si(100) Surface at Hyperthermal Energies (20-300 eV)

  • In an attempt to understand the nature of hyperthermal ion-surface collisions, noble gas ion beams (He+, Ne+, Ar+, and Xe+) are scattered from a Si(100) surface for collision energies of 20-300 eV and for 45°incidence angle. The scattered ions are mass-analyzed using a quadrupole mass spectrometer and their kinetic energy is measured in a time-of-flight mode. The scattering event for He+ and Ne+ can be approximated as a sequence of quasi-binary collisions with individual Si atoms for high collision energies (Ei > 100 eV), but it becomes of a many-body nature for lower energies, Ar+ and Xe+ ions undergo mutliple large impact parameter collisions with the surface atoms. The effective mass of a surface that these heavy ions experience during the collision increases drastically for low beam energies.

  • Purpose: To develop a risk metric for failure cause that can help determine the action priority of each failure cause in FMEA considering time sequence of cause- failure- detection. Methods: Assuming a quadratic loss function the unfulfilled mission period, a risk metric is obtained by deriving the failure time distribution. Results: The proposed risk metric has some reasonable properties for evaluating risk accompanied with a failure cause. Conclusion: The study may be applied to determining action priorities among all the failure causes in the FMEA sheet, requiring further studies for general situation of failure process.

선편광된 10 GHz 선폭의 1 kW급 20/400-㎛ 이터븀 첨가 광섬유 레이저 (Linearly Polarized 1-kW 20/400-㎛ Yb-doped Fiber Laser with 10-GHz Linewidth)

  • 본 연구에서는 다파장 빔결합을 위한 master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) 구조의 선편광 고출력 이터븀 첨가 광섬유 레이저를 개발하였다. 유도 브릴루앙 산란(stimulated Brillouin scattering, SBS)을 억제하기 위하여 pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) 신호로 위상 변조 및 비트길이를 최적화한 선폭 약 10 GHz의 시드 레이저를 구현하였으며, 이를 이용하여 3단 증폭을 하였다. 주 증폭단에서는 모드 불안정성 현상(mode instability, MI)의 문턱값을 높이기 위하여 코어 및 클래딩의 직경이 각각 20 ㎛, 40 ㎛인 편광유지(polarization maintaining, PM) 이터븀 첨가 광섬유를 이용하고 지름이 약 9-12 cm인 나선형 홈에 적용하였다. 그 결과, 입사된 여기광 대비 기울기 효율이 83.7%인 1.004 kW의 레이저 출력을 얻었다. 또한, 빔품질(M2)과 편광소광율(polarization extinction ratio, PER)은 각각 1.12와 21.5 dB로 측정되었다. 더욱이, 역방향 스펙트럼의 레일리 신호와 SBS 신호의 첨두 세기 비율은 2.36 dB로 관측되어, SBS가 완화된 레이저 구현을 확인하였다. 또한 증폭 출력에 따라 기울기 효율 및 빔품질의 저하가 없어 모드불안정이 발생하지 않음을 확인하였다.

HEVC 비디오 인코더 PMR 블록 설계에 대한 연구 (A Study on the HEVC Video Encoder PMR Block Design)

  • HEVC/H.265는 ITU-T SG 16 WP와 ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC29/WG 11에서 제안된 가장 최근의 비디오 코딩 표준안이다. H.265에서 영상은 연속된 코딩 트리 유닛(CTU)들로 나누어지고, CTU는 다양한 지역적 특성을 받아들이기 위해 다수의 코딩 유닛(CU)들로 나누어진다. H.265의 코딩 효율은 이전 표준인 H.264/AVC와 비교하면 약 2배 정도 우수하나 확장된 CU와 변환블록(Transform)의 크기가 증가함에 따라 인코더 내에서 예측 (Prediction), 모드결정 (Mode decision) 그리고 복원(Reconstruction) 블록의 하드웨어 크기가 이전 표준과 비교하여 4배 정도 증가하는 문제점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위하여 인코더 내에서 복잡도가 가장 큰 Prediction/Mode Decision/Reconstruction (PMR) 블록에 대하여 코딩효율(PSNR)을 저하시키지 않는 범위 내에서 하드웨어 복잡도를 줄이기 위한 새로운 구조를 제안한다. 복잡도가 감소된 하드웨어를 이용하면 전체 비디오 인코더의 사이즈를 줄일 수 있으며, Full-HD 영상에 대하여 300 Mhz의 클록 주파수와 60 fps의 프레임율로 동작한다. 테스트 영상에 대하여 PMR 예측 블록에서 Bjøntegaard Delta (BD) 비트율의 증가는 평균 30 % 이며, PMR 블록의 전체 게이트 수는 약 1.8 M 이다.

Effects of small tidal volume and positive end-expiratory pressure on oxygenation in pressure-controlled ventilation-volume guaranteed mode during one-lung ventilation

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether tidal volume (TV) of 8 mL/kg without positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) and TV of 6 mL/kg with or without PEEP in pressure-controlled ventilation-volume guaranteed (PCV-VG) mode can maintain arterial oxygenation and decrease inspiratory airway pressure effectively during one-lung ventilation (OLV). Methods: The study enrolled 27 patients undergoing thoracic surgery. All patients were ventilated with PCV-VG mode. During OLV, patients were initially ventilated with TV 8 mL/kg (group TV8) without PEEP. Ventilation was subsequently changed to TV 6 mL/kg with PEEP ($5cmH_2O$; group TV6+PEEP) or without (group TV6) in random sequence. Peak inspiratory pressure ($P_{peak}$), mean airway pressure ($P_{mean}$), and arterial blood gas analysis were measured 30 min after changing ventilator settings. Ventilation was then changed once more to add or eliminate PEEP ($5cmH_2O$), while maintaining TV 6 mL/kg. Thirty min after changing ventilator settings, the same parameters were measured once more. Results: The $P_{peak}$ was significantly lower in group TV6 ($19.3{\pm}3.3cmH_2O$) than in group TV8 ($21.8{\pm}3.1cmH_2O$) and group TV6+PEEP ($20.1{\pm}3.4cmH_2O$). $PaO_2$ was significantly higher in group TV8 ($242.5{\pm}111.4mmHg$) than in group TV6 ($202.1{\pm}101.3mmHg$) (p=0.044). There was no significant difference in $PaO_2$ between group TV8 and group TV6+PEEP ($226.8{\pm}121.1mmHg$). However, three patients in group TV6 were dropped from the study because $PaO_2$ was lower than 80 mmHg after ventilation. Conclusion: It is postulated that TV 8 mL/kg without PEEP or TV 6 mL/kg with $5cmH_2O$ PEEP in PCV-VG mode during OLV can safely maintain adequate oxygenation.

Characterization of Bacillus anthracis proteases through protein-protein interaction: an in silico study of anthrax pathogenicity

  • Anthrax is the deadly disease for human being caused by Bacillus anthracis. Instantaneous research work on the mode of infection of the organism revealed that different proteases are involved in different steps of pathogenesis. Present study reports the in silico characterization and the detection of pathogenic proteases involved in anthrax infection through protein-protein interaction. A total of 13 acid, 9 neutral, and 1 alkaline protease of Bacillus anthracis were selected for analysing the physicochemical parameter, the protein superfamily and family search, multiple sequence alignment, phylogenetic tree construction, protein-protein interactions and motif finding. Among the 13 acid proteases, 10 were found as extracellular enzymes that interact with immune inhibitor A (InhA) and help the organism to cross the blood brain barrier during the process of infection. Multiple sequence alignment of above acid proteases revealed the position 368, 489, and 498-contained 100% conserved amino acids which could be used to deactivate the protease. Among the groups analyzed, only acid protease were found to interact with InhA, which indicated that metalloproteases of acid protease group have the capability to develop pathogenesis during B. anthracis infection. Deactivation of conserved amino acid position of germination protease can stop the sporulation and germination of B anthracis cell. The detailed interaction study of neutral and alkaline proteases could also be helpful to design the interaction network for the better understanding of anthrax disease.

ATM 네트워크에서 셀손실 회복을 위한 새로운 순서번호($SN^{\ast}$) 알고리즘 (New Sequence Number(SN*) Algorithm for Cell Loss Recovery in ATM Networks)

  • B-ISDN과 같은 초고속 네트워크에서 전송오류의 주요원인은 과잉밀집 상태에 있어서의 버퍼 오버플로우이며 이로 인해 셀 손실을 야기한다. 기존의 통신 프로토콜은 손실된 패킷이나 전송에러들을 다루기 위해 ARQ와 같이 오류회복을 위해 재전송 기법을 사용하고 있으나 이러한 ARQ 방법들은 재전송으로 인한 전송 지연시간이 매우 크기 때문에 초고속 네트워크에서는 적합하지 않다. 따라서 본 논문은 이러한 문제를 줄이기 위하여 B-ISDN에서 FEC를 이용한 셀손실 회복기법을 제안하였다. 제안된 기법은 새로운 순서번호(SN)인 SN*를 이용하여 연속적인 셀손실을 식별한다. SN*는 SN이외에 다른 두 개의 필드(ST, LI)를 조합하여 생성한 순서번호로 그 특성에 따라 가산적(additive) SN*와 승산적(multiplicative) SN*로 구분된다.이러한 연구결과로 FEC는 네트워크 노드상에 버퍼 오버플로우로 인한 셀손실이 발생한 경우에 유용하며 B-ISDN과 같은 초고속 통신망에서의 셀손실 회복에 효과적으로 사용할 수 있는 오류에 기법임을 보여주고 있다. 본 논문에서 제안된 효율적인 셀손실 회복기법은 향후 ATM 네트워크에서의 우선순위 제어, 과잉밀집 제어 등의 연\ulcorner에 효율적으로 사용될 수 있다.
