This paper proposes an analytical mode decomposition (AMD) and Hilbert transform method for structural nonlinearity quantification and damage detection under earthquake loads. The measured structural response is first decomposed into several intrinsic mode functions (IMF) using the proposed AMD method. Each IMF is an amplitude modulated-frequency modulated signal with narrow frequency bandwidth. Then, the instantaneous frequencies of the decomposed IMF can be defined with Hilbert transform. However, for a nonlinear structure, the defined instantaneous frequencies from the decomposed IMF are not equal to the instantaneous frequencies of the structure itself. The theoretical derivation in this paper indicates that the instantaneous frequency of the decomposed measured response includes a slowly-varying part which represents the instantaneous frequency of the structure and rapidly-varying part for a nonlinear structure subjected to earthquake excitations. To eliminate the rapidly-varying part effects, the instantaneous frequency is integrated over time duration. Then the degree of nonlinearity index, which represents the damage severity of structure, is defined based on the integrated instantaneous frequency in this paper. A one-story hysteretic nonlinear structure with various earthquake excitations are simulated as numerical examples and the degree of nonlinearity index is obtained. Finally, the degree of nonlinearity index is estimated from the experimental data of a seven-story building under four earthquake excitations. The index values for the building subjected to a low intensity earthquake excitation, two medium intensity earthquake excitations, and a large intensity earthquake excitation are calculated as 12.8%, 23.0%, 23.2%, and 39.5%, respectively.

Kirchhoff-Love plate (KLP) equation is a well established theory for a description of a deformation of a thin plate under certain outer source. Meanwhile, analysis of a vibrating plate in a frequency domain is important in terms of obtaining the main frequency/eigenfunctions and predicting the vibration of plate. Among various modal analysis methods, dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) is one of the efficient data-driven methods. In this work, we carry out DMD based modal analysis for KLP where thin plate is under effects of sine-type outer force. We first construct discrete time series of KLP solutions based on a finite difference method (FDM). Over 720,000 number of FDM-generated solutions, we select only 500 number of solutions for the DMD implementation. We report the resulting DMD-modes for KLP. Also, we show how DMD can be used to predict KLP solutions in an efficient way.
This paper presents an improved version of the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) for the modal evaluation of structural systems or signals. In this improved HHT, a well-designed bandpass filter is used as preprocessing to separate and determine each mode of the signal for solving the inherent modemixing problem in HHT (i.e., empirical mode decomposition, EMD, associated with the Hilbert transform). A screening process is then applied to remove undesired intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) derived from the EMD of the signal's mode. A "best" IMF is selected in each screening process that utilizes the orthogonalization coefficient between the signal's mode and its IMFs. Through mode-by-mode signal filtering, parameters such as the modal frequency can be evaluated accurately when compared to the theoretical value. Time history of the identified modal frequency is available. Numerical results prove the efficiency of the proposed approach, showing relative errors 1.40%, 2.06%, and 1.46%, respectively, for the test cases of a benchmark structure in the lab, a simulated time-varying structural system, and of a linear superimposed cosine waves.
Natural variability associated with a variety of large-scale climate modes causes regional differences in sea level rise (SLR), which is particularly remarkable in the Pacific Ocean. Because the superposition of the natural variability and the background anthropogenic trend in sea level can potentially threaten to inundate low-lying and heavily populated coastal regions, it is important to quantify sea level variability associated with internal climate variability and understand their interaction when projecting future SLR impacts. This study seeks to identify the dominant modes of sea level variability in the tropical Pacific and quantify how these modes contribute to regional sea level changes, particularly on the two strong El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ events that occurred in the winter of 1997/1998 and 2015/2016. To do so, an adaptive data analysis approach, Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD), was undertaken with regard to two datasets of altimetry-based and in situ-based steric sea levels. Using this EEMD analysis, we identified distinct internal modes associated with El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) varying from 1.5 to 7 years and low-frequency variability with a period of ~12 years that were clearly distinct from the secular trend. The ENSO-scale frequencies strongly impact on an east-west dipole of sea levels across the tropical Pacific, while the low-frequency (i.e., decadal) mode is predominant in the North Pacific with a horseshoe shape connecting tropical and extratropical sea levels. Of particular interest is that the low-frequency mode resulted in different responses in regional SLR to ENSO events. The low-frequency mode contributed to a sharp increase (decrease) of sea level in the eastern (western) tropical Pacific in the 2015/2016 El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ but made a negative contribution to the sea level signals in the 1997/1998 El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$. This indicates that the SLR signals of the ENSO can be amplified or depressed at times of transition in the low-frequency mode in the tropical Pacific.
In this paper, the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) method, which is a statistical analysis technique to find the modal characteristics of a structure, is adapted to identify the modal parameters of a tall chimney structure. A wind force time history, which is applied to the structure, is obtained by a wind tunnel test of a scale down model. The POD method is applied on the wind force induced responses of the structure, and the true normal modes of the structure can be obtained. The modal parameters including, natural frequency, mode shape, damping ratio and kinetic energy of the structure can be estimated accurately. With these results, it may be concluded that the POD method can be applied to obtain accurate modal parameters from the wind-induced building responses.

To identify turbulent flow characteristics of non-reacting case resulted from cooling flow injection in a rectangular swirl combustor, 3D Large Eddy Simulation(LES) was implemented and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition(POD) analysis was used for post-processing. The combustor of concern is the LM6000, lean premixed dry low-NOx annular combustor, developed by GEAE. It was observed that increase in speed of shear layer resulted from the inflow of cooling flow caused intensified vorticity magnitude in central toroidal recirculation zone. In the case of vorticity magnitude in corner recirculation zone, however, was weakened. In addition, pressure fluctuation in combustor was damped down and longitudinal acoustic mode was significantly dissipated
The Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) technique was applied to investigate the effects of Reynolds number and the characteristics of the organized motions or coherent structures as a function of downstream position from x/D=2 to 6 in a turbulent axisymmetric shear layer at Reynolds numbers of 78,400, 117,600, and 156,800. Data were collected simultaneously using the 138 hot-wire probe used by Citriniti and George (2000). The POD was then applied to a double Fourier transform in time and azimuthal direction of the double velocity correlation tensor. The lowest azimuthal mode for all POD modes, which dominated the dynamics at x=D = 3 in the previous experiments, dies off rapidly downstream. This is consistent with a trend toward homogeneity in the downstream evolution, and suggests that some residual value may control the growth rate of the far jet. On the other hand, for the higher azimuthal modes, the peak shifts to lower mode numbers and actually increases with downstream distance. These mixing layer data, normalized by similarity variables for the mixing layer, collapse at all downstream positions and are nearly independent of Reynolds numbers.

Fuzzy system is capable of uniformly approximating any nonlinear function over compact input space. The applications of fuzzy system, however, have been primarily limited by the need for large number of fuzzy rules, in particular, for the high-order nonlinear system. In this paper, we propose the reconstruction methods of fuzzy systems, parallel type and cascade, based on the decomposition of some classes of high-order nonlinear functions. Using the both types appropriately, we can reduce the number of fuzzy rules geometrically. It can be applied to the fuzzy system that has an online adaptive structure. Two examples of adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control are shown in the computer simulations to verify the validity of the proposed algorithm.

Centrifugal pumps are a crucial part of nuclear power plants, and their dependable and safe operation is crucial to the security of the entire facility. Cavitation will cause the centrifugal pump to violently vibration with the large number of vacuoles generated, which not only affect the hydraulic performance of the centrifugal pump but also cause structural damage to the impeller, seriously affecting the operational safety of nuclear power plants. A closed cavitation test bench of a centrifugal pump is constructed, and a method for precisely identifying the cavitation state is proposed based on Complementary Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (CEEMD) and Deep Residual Shrinkage Network (DRSN). First, we compared the cavitation sensitivity of pressure fluctuation, vibration, and liquid-borne noise and decomposed the liquid-borne noise by CEEMD to capture cavitation characteristics. The decomposition results are sent into a 12-layer deep residual shrinkage network (DRSN) for cavitation identification training. The results demonstrate that the liquid-borne noise signal is the most cavitation-sensitive signal, and the accuracy of CEEMD-DRSN to identify cavitation at different stages of centrifugal pumps arrives at 94.61%
Epileptic Seizure is a popular brain disease in the world. It affects the nervous system and the activities of brain function that make a person who has seizure signs cannot control and predict his actions. Based on the Electroencephalography (EEG) signals which are recorded from human or animal brains, the scientists use many methods to detect and recognize the abnormal activities of brain. Tucker model is investigated to solve this problem. Tucker decomposition is known as a higher-order form of Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), a well-known algorithm for decomposing a matric. It is widely used to extract good features of a tensor. After decomposing, the result of Tucker decomposition is a core tensor and some factor matrices along each mode. This core tensor contains a number of the best information of original data. In this paper, we used Tucker decomposition as a way to obtain good features. Training data is primarily applied into the core tensor and the remained matrices will be combined with the test data to build the Tucker base that is used for testing. Using core tensor makes the process simpler and obtains higher accuracies.
