This paper presents the results of a study to show how the development of a crack alters the structural behavior of I-shaped steel beams and how this can be used to evaluate nondestructive evaluation techniques. The approach is based on changes in the dynamic behavior. An approximate finite element model for a cracked beam with I-shaped cross-section is developed based on a simplified fracture model. The model is then used to review different damage cases. Damage detection techniques are studied to determine their ability to identify the existence of the crack and to identify its location. The techniques studied are the coordinate modal assurance criterion, the modal flexibility, and the state and the slope arrays.

This paper proposes a criterion to select the modes for modal truncated model of flexible rotor only supported by active magnetic bearings. The proposed approach relies on the concepts of minimum control input and output energy assuming that the system is subjected to transient disturbances. Accurate large order model for the levitated rotor is taken by finite element analysis and transformed to the modal equation. By proposed methodology, which modal states should be retained in the truncated model are investigated over the whole operational speed range by the calculation. Finally, the effectiveness is verified by checking the model error between original model and reduced model.

Modal analysis does well predict the elastic dynamic response of the torsionally unbalanced structure. But modal analysis overestimates the rotation of the structure in inelastic range, so one side members require ductility too much and the others require ductility too small in comparison with torsionally balanced structure. In this paper, in order to reduce difference of ductility demand between both side members of the torsionally unbalanced structure, design eccentricity of seismic load is evaluated and the method determining the strength center of structure is proposed using modal analysis. For several cases, the ductility demand of stucture is compared to investigate the propriety of the proposed approach.
A scalar Fourier modal method for the numerical analysis of the scalar wave equation in inhomogeneous space with an arbitrary permittivity profile, is proposed as a novel theoretical embodiment of Fourier optics. The modeling of devices and systems using conventional Fourier optics is based on the thin-element approximation, but this approach becomes less accurate with high numerical aperture or thick optical elements. The proposed scalar Fourier modal method describes the wave optical characteristics of optical structures in terms of the generalized transmittance function, which can readily overcome a current limitation of Fourier optics.
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of steel towers has become a hot research topic. From the literature, it is impractical and impossible to develop a "general" method that can detect all kinds of damages for all types of structures. A practical method should make use of the characteristics of the type of structures and the kind of damages. This paper reports a feasibility study on the use of measured modal parameters for the detection of damaged braces of tower structures following the Bayesian probabilistic approach. A substructure-based structural model-updating scheme, which groups different parts of the target structure systematically and is specially designed for tower structures, is developed to identify the stiffness distributions of the target structure under the undamaged and possibly damaged conditions. By comparing the identified stiffness distributions, the damage locations and the corresponding damage extents can be detected. By following the Bayesian theory, the probability model of the uncertain parameters is derived. The most probable model of the steel tower can be obtained by maximizing the probability density function (PDF) of the model parameters. Experimental case studies were employed to verify the proposed method. The contributions of this paper are not only on the proposal of the substructure-based Bayesian model updating method but also on the verification of the proposed methodology through measured data from a scale model of transmission tower under laboratory conditions.
The dynamic characterization is important in making accurate predictions of the seismic response of the hybrid structures dominated by different damping mechanisms. Different damping characteristics arise from the construction of hybrid structure with different materials: steel for the upper part; reinforced concrete for the lower main part and interaction with supporting soil. The process of modeling damping matrices and experimental verification is challenging because damping cannot be determined via static tests as can mass and stiffness. The assumption of classical damping is not appropriate if the system to be analyzed consists of two or more parts with significantly different levels of damping. The dynamic response of structures is critically determined by the damping mechanisms, and its value is very important for the design and analysis of vibrating structures. A numerical algorithm capable of evaluating the equivalent modal damping ratio from structural components is desirable for improving seismic design. Two approaches are considered to explore the dynamic response of hybrid tower of cable-stayed bridges: The first approach makes use of a simplified model of 2 coupled lumped masses to investigate the effects of subsystems different damping, mass ratio, frequency ratio on dynamic characteristics and equivalent modal damping; the second approach employs a detailed numerical step-by step integration procedure.
Nowadays, there are two classes of methods for damage detection in structures consisting of static and dynamic. The dynamic methods are based on studying the changes in structure's dynamic characteristics. The theoretical basis of this method is that damage causes changes in dynamic characteristics of structures. The dynamic methods are divided into two categories: signal based and modal based. The modal based methods utilize the modal properties consisting of natural frequencies, modal damping and mode shapes. As the modal properties are sensitive to changes in the structure, these can be used for detecting the damages. In this study, using dynamic method and modal based approach (natural frequencies and mode shapes), the objective function is formulated. Then, detection of damages of truss structures is addressed by using Simplified Dolphin Echolocation algorithm and solving inverse optimization problem. Many scenarios are used to simulate the damages. To demonstrate the ability of the algorithm, different truss structures with several multiple elements scenarios are tested using a few runs. The influence of the two different levels of noise in the modal data for these scenarios is also considered. The last example of this article is investigated using a different mutation. This mutation obtains the exact answer with fewer loops and population by limited computational effort.
An existing Damage Index Method is verified to demonstrate its feasibility for detecting structural damage in truss bridges (1) for which modal parameters are available for a few modes of vibration and (2) for which baseline modal information is not available from its as-built state. The theory of approach to detect locations of damage and to identify baseline modal model is summarized on the basis of system identification theory and modal sensitivity theory. The feasibility of the Damage Index Method is demonstrated using a numerical example of a truss bridge with 11 subsystems of 211 members and for which only two modes of vibration were recorded for post-damaged state.
In this paper, an adaptive MEMD based modal identification technique for linear time-invariant systems is proposed employing multiple vibration measurements. Traditional empirical mode decomposition (EMD) suffers from mode-mixing during sifting operations to identify intrinsic mode functions (IMF). MEMD performs better in this context as it considers multi-channel data and projects them into a n-dimensional hypercube to evaluate the IMFs. Using this technique, modal parameters of the structural system are identified. It is observed that MEMD has superior performance compared to its traditional counterpart. However, it still suffers from mild mode-mixing in higher modes where the energy contents are low. To avoid this problem, an adaptive filtering scheme is proposed to decompose the interfering modes. The Proposed modified scheme is then applied to vibrations of a reinforced concrete road bridge. Results presented in this study show that the proposed MEMD based approach coupled with the filtering technique can effectively identify the parameters of the dominant modes present in the structural response with a significant level of accuracy.

The design characteristics of circular vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers are studied by using a newly developed equivalent network. Optical parameters, such as the stop-band or the reflectivity of periodic mirrors and the resonance wavelength, are explored for the design of these structures. To evaluate the differential quantum efficiency and the threshold current density, a transverse resonance condition of modal transmission-line theory is also utilized. This approach dramatically reduces the computational time as well as gives an explicit insight to explore the optical characteristics of circular vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs).
