In this study, an output-only modal identification approach is proposed for decentralized wireless sensor nodes used for linear structural systems. The following approaches are implemented to achieve the objective. Firstly, an output-only modal identification method is selected for decentralized wireless sensor networks. Secondly, the effect of time-unsynchronization is assessed with respect to the accuracy of modal identification analysis. Time-unsynchronized signals are analytically examined to quantify uncertainties and their corresponding errors in modal identification results. Thirdly, a modified approach using complex mode shapes is proposed to reduce the unsynchronization-induced errors in modal identification. In the new way, complex mode shapes are extracted from unsynchronized signals to deal both with modal amplitudes and with phase angles. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed approach is evaluated from numerical and experimental tests by comparing with the performance of existing approach using real mode shapes.
In this study, the Bayesian probabilistic framework is investigated for modal identification and modal identifiability based on the field measurements provided in the structural health monitoring benchmark problem of an instrumented cable-stayed bridge named Ting Kau Bridge (TKB). The comprehensive structural health monitoring system on the cable-stayed TKB has been operated for more than ten years and it is recognized as one of the best test-beds with readily available field measurements. The benchmark problem of the cable-stayed bridge is established to stimulate investigations on modal identifiability and the present paper addresses this benchmark problem from the Bayesian prospective. In contrast to deterministic approaches, an appealing feature of the Bayesian approach is that not only the optimal values of the modal parameters can be obtained but also the associated estimation uncertainty can be quantified in the form of probability distribution. The uncertainty quantification provides necessary information to evaluate the reliability of parametric identification results as well as modal identifiability. Herein, the Bayesian spectral density approach is conducted for output-only modal identification and the Bayesian model class selection approach is used to evaluate the significance of different modes in modal identification. Detailed analysis on the modal identification and modal identifiability based on the measurements of the bridge will be presented. Moreover, the advantages and potentials of Bayesian probabilistic framework on structural health monitoring will be discussed.
A modal approach is proposed for dynamic analysis of concrete arch dam-reservoir systems in frequency domain. The technique relies on mode shapes extracted by considering the symmetric parts of total mass and stiffness matrices. Based on this method, a previously developed program is modified, and the response of Morrow Point arch dam is studied for various conditions. The method is proved to be very effective and it is an extremely convenient modal technique for dynamic analysis of concrete arch dams.
A new approach to conducting the vibration parameters identification algorithm is proposed. The approach employs the concept of modal amplitude ratio implemented in a mode shape estimation. The accuracy of the improved Ibrahim Time Domain identification algorithm in extracting structural modal parameters from free response functions has been studied using computer simulated data for 9 stations on the two-span continuous beam. Simulated responses from the lumped and distributed parameter system demonstrate that this algorithm produces excellent results, even in the 300% noise response.
The purpose of this paper is to explain the meanings and uses of the English auxiliaries SHALL/WILL. The complexity of modern usage of SHALL/WILL has been one of the most disputable themes of traditional English grammar. The paper purported to address the study and analysis of diachronic and synchronic approach to the two auxiliaries. A general view of the figures of Fries'(1925) survey was added for further investigation. The results of the study showed that these auxiliaries express some of various modal meanings associated with the volitional or emotional attitude of the speaker without implying futurity. The findings also suggested that the use of SHALL in present-day English is restricted to non-volitional future with the first person but the practice of this use is also diminished by the expansion of the use of WILL, and the original meaning of WILL, 'to desire or wish', has generally been replaced by other verbs or modal forms. But sentences which seem to indicate futurity are often tinged with modal senses. Therefore, WILL/SHALL should be considered to act either as tense auxiliary or as modal auxiliary depending on situational contexts in which it occurs.
An active modal-fuzzy control method using hydraulic actuators is presented for seismic response reduction. In the proposed control system, a new fuzzy controller designed in the modal space produces the desired active control force. This type controller has all advantages of the fuzzy control algorithm and modal approach. Since it is very difficult to select input variables used in fuzzy controller among an amount of state variables in the active fuzzy control system the presented algorithm adopts the modal control algorithm which is able to consider more easily information of all state variables in civil structures that are usually dominated by first few modes. In other words, all information of the whole structure can be considered in the control algorithm evaluated to reduce seismic responses and it can be efficient for especially civil structures. In addition, the presented algorithm is expected to magnify utility and performance caused by efficiency that the fuzzy algorithm can handle complex model more easily. An active modal-fuzzy control scheme is applied together with a Kalman filter and a low-pass filter to be applicable to real civil structures. A Kalman filter is considered to estimate modal states and a low-pass filter was used to eliminate spillover problem. The results of the numerical simulations far a wide amplitude range o f loading conditions and for historic earthquakes having various frequency components show that the proposed active modal-fuzzy control system can be beneficial in reducing seismic responses of civil structures.

Damage detection in structures using the change of modal parameters (modal shapes and natural frequencies) has achieved satisfactory results. However, as modal shapes and natural frequencies alone may not provide enough information to accurately detect damages. Therefore, a hybrid singular value decomposition and deep belief network approach is developed to effectively identify damages in aluminum plate structures. Firstly, damage locations are determined using singular value decomposition (SVD) to reveal the singularities of measured displacement modal shapes. Secondly, using experimental modal analysis (EMA) to measure the natural frequencies of damaged aluminum plates as inputs, deep belief network (DBN) is employed to search damage severities from the damage evaluation database, which are calculated using finite element method (FEM). Both simulations and experimental investigations are performed to evaluate the performance of the presented hybrid method. Several damage cases in a simply supported aluminum plate show that the presented method is effective to identify multiple damages in aluminum plates with reasonable precision.
In the first paper of this research$^{(1)}$. a new time series method. directional ARMAX (dARMAX) model-based approach. was proposed for rotordynamics identification. The dARMAX processes complex-valued signals, utilizing the complex modal testing theory which enables the separation of the backward and forward modes in the two-sided frequency domain and makes effective modal parameter identification possible. to account for the dynamic characteristics inherent in rotating machinery. In this second part. an evaluation of its performance characteristics based on both simulated and experimental data is presented. Numerical simulations are carried out to show that the method. a complex time series method. successfully implements the complex modal testing in the time domain. and it is superior in nature to the conventional ARMAX and the frequency-domain methods in the estimation of the modal parameters for isotropic and weakly anisotropic rotor systems. Experiments are carried out to demonstrate the applicability and the effectiveness of the dARMAX model-based approach, following the proposed fitting strategy. for the rotordynamics identification.
In this article, a novel structural modal parameters identification methodology is developed to determine the natural frequencies and damping ratios of civil structures based on the symplectic geometry mode decomposition (SGMD) approach. The SGMD approach is a new decomposition algorithm that can decompose the complex response signals with better decomposition performance and robustness. The novel method firstly decomposes the measured structural vibration response signals into individual mode components using the SGMD approach. The natural excitation technique (NExT) method is then used to obtain the free vibration response of each individual mode component. Finally, modal natural frequencies and damping ratios are identified using the direct interpolating (DI) method and a curve fitting function. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated based on numerical simulation and field measurement. The structural modal parameters are identified utilizing the simulated non-stationary responses of a frame structure and the field measured non-stationary responses of a supertall building during a typhoon. The results demonstrate that the developed method can identify the natural frequencies and damping ratios of civil structures efficiently and accurately.
