  • In the last decade, the research of the usability of mobile phones has been a newly evolving area with few established methodologies and realistic practices that ensure capturing usability in evaluation. Thus, there exists growing demand to explore appropriate evaluation methodologies that evaluate the usability of mobile phones quickly as well as comprehensively. This study aims to develop a task-based usability checklist based on heuristic evaluations in views of mobile phone UI practitioners. A hierarchical structure of UI design elements and usability principles related to mobile phones were developed and then utilized to develop the checklist. In order to demonstrate the practical effectiveness of the proposed checklist, comparative experiments were conducted on the usability checklist and usability testing. Majority of usability problems found by usability testing and additional problems were discovered by the proposed checklist. It is expected that the usability checklist proposed in this study could be used quickly and efficiently by usability practitioners to evaluate the mobile phone UI in the middle of the mobile phone development process.

  • The present paper focuses on the comparison of user experience of mobile phone keypad and touchpad. Mobile phone has recently adopted a touchpad keyboard style and it gives users advantages and disadvantages as well. This paper examined usability, usefulness, affect and attitude of those two keyboard styles and disclosed interesting outcomes. First, keypad is better than touchpad in usefulness and usability. Second, touchpad is better than keypad in affect. Finally, touchpad is better than keypad in attitude. Overall, although touchapd is evaluated as worse keyboard in usability and usefulness, test subjects favored touchpad keyboard because it is more emotional and affective. It implies new digital device including mobile phone has to get more affective appeal to the young users and emotion will be a key point in digital consumption.

  • India is having a high growth rate of Mobile subscribers which has opened up a new marketing channel of communication with customers. There is a need to study the factors affecting Mobile user's attitude towards Mobile marketing and the relationship between these factors. To study the mobile users attitude towards mobile marketing 489 mobile users opinion is taken on 12 statements for a period of 5 months. Using factor analysis method these 12 statements are grouped into 5 groups they are Mobile advertisement, Mobile Usability, Mobile Promotions, Mobiles shopping and Mobile Marketing. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was performed to confirm the findings. SPSS Statistics 17.0 is used to conduct factor analysis and the validity of the model. Once the model was validated, SPSS Amos 18.0 was used to fit a model based on Structure Equation Model to analyze the factors affecting Mobile user's attitude and the relationship between these factors. The present study revealed that Mobile Advertisement and Mobile Sales Promotion are having positive effect on Mobile Marketing where as Mobile Shopping and Mobile Phone Usability is having negative effect on Mobile Marketing. The impact of indicators like Mobile Phone user's permission and personalization of Mobile Phone communication on Mobile Marketing are also discussed in this article.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the attributing factors influencing usability of the mobile phones specifically designed for the elderly users. Efforts to identify factors that cause usability problems for the elderly users in using mobile phones can provide the groundwork for changes aimed at usability enhancement and design of interfaces of mobile phones. Background: It became important to understand the behaviors and tendencies of the elderly in communication as the society became older. The problems in digital divide is contributed to mainly lack of understanding in terms of the use pattern of the elderly and lack of consideration of their characteristics in designing user interfaces of most ICT devices. Method: A total of 30 elderly users who were over 65 years in age participated in usability evaluation test experiment and performed seven different tasks using a widely accepted model of universally designed mobile phone. Their performance was compared with that of contrast group that consisted of 10 younger participants who were on their 20s. Results: It was found that the elderly users had hard times in using mobile phones, especially in keypad manipulation among search, understanding, and manipulation subtasks. Conclusion: Older users seemed to have difficulty in all the subtasks of search, recognition, and manipulation. It was suggested that designers of mobile phones need to give careful consideration into designing visual interfaces for search tasks and keypads for easier control and input for the elderly users. Application: The study is expected to provide guidelines for the universal design of mobile phones and their interfaces for enhancing usability of the mobile phone for elderly users.

  • The aim of the study is to investigate the usability of wheel navigation key(WNK) recently adopted for the new models of mobile phone and MP3 product. In this study, an experiment was designed to evaluate the functional benefit of WNK by using a performance test. A questionnaire was also used to examine the personal preference. In results, a significant difference was found in performance time between wheel-type and button-type product. In general, the difference was more significant as subject's skill level was higher. In particular, the performance time was significantly shortened with the WNK when a searching task was required, but push button was an effective interface for simple search task among beginners. Therefore, the wheel navigation key can be used to improve the usability of product by reducing the searching time in mobile phone and mp3. For practical application, the user's level of skill needs to be considered to maximize the effect of interface when choosing WNK or push button.

  • In order to minimize a biased view of evaluators in usability test, a multiple evaluation method so called Multi-Centered Usability Evaluation Method(MCUEM) was suggested and structured in this study. To use MCUEM, the existing evaluation methods were re-categorized into 'developer and evaluator-centered', 'evaluator-centered', 'user-centered', 'evaluator and user-centered', and the 'developer, evaluator, and user-centered methods. Furthermore, in order to verify the relevance of MCUEM, the usability of mobile phone was tested in this study. In results, it was found that different evaluation methods generated greatly different results, that showed the risk of using a particular usability method due to different perspectives of evaluators. At the same time, it was found that MCUEM could greatly minimize such biases. Therefore, it was concluded that using MCUEM could help the usability engineer design a test protocol with a minimal risk of bias due to different perspective of evaluators.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the usability and user interface in different types of mobile phones. KLM(key-stroke-level model) model estimation and observation values were calculated to perform 11 functional factors in 4 ordinary mobile phones and 4 smart phones. In results, it was found that the usability of ordinary phone is superior to smart phone in basic and simple function likes phone call. On the contrary, the usability of smart phone is superior to memorizing and picturing function. Current results can be used to anticipate the future effort to improve user interface design especially in smart phone.
