Expensive PCBN or ceramic cutting tools are used for processing of difficult-to-cut materials such as Ti and Ni alloy materials. These tools have the problem of breaking easily due to their high hardness but low fracture toughness. To solve these problems, cutting tools that form various coating layers are used in low-cost WC-Co hard material tools, and research on various tool materials is being conducted. In this study, binderless-WC, WC-6 wt%Co, WC-6 wt%Co-1 wt% Mo2C, and WC-6 wt%Co-2.5 wt% Mo2C hard materials are densified using horizontal ball milled WC-Co, WC-Co-Mo2C powders, and spark plasma sintering process (SPS process). Each SPSed Binderless-WC, WC-6 wt%Co-1 wt% Mo2C, and WC-6 wt%Co-2.5 wt% Mo2C hard materials are almost completely dense, with relative density of up to 99.5 % after the simultaneous application of pressure of 60 MPa and almost no significant change in grain size. The average grain sizes of WC for Binderless-WC, WC-6 wt%Co-1 wt% Mo2C, and WC-6 wt%Co-2.5 wt% Mo2C hard materials are about 0.37, 0.6, 0.54, and 0.43 ㎛, respectively. Mechanical properties, microstructure, and phase analysis of SPSed Binderless-WC, WC-6 wt%Co-1 wt% Mo2C, and WC-6 wt%Co-2.5 wt% Mo2C hard materials are investigated.

Titanium and its alloys have been widely used for biomedical applications. However, the use of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy in biomaterial is then a subject of controversy because aluminum ions and vanadium oxide have potential detrimental influence on the human body due to vanadium and aluminum. Hence, recent works showed that the synthesis of new Ti-based alloys for implant application involves more biocompatible metallic alloying element, such as, Nb, Hf, Zr and Mo. In particular, Nb and Hf are one of the most effective Ti ${\beta}$-stabilizer and reducing the elastic modulus. Plasma electrolyte oxidation (PEO) is known as excellent method in the biocompatibility of biomaterial due to quickly coating time and controlled coating condition. The anodized oxide layer and diameter modulation of Ti alloys can be obtained function of improvement of cell adhesion. Silicon (Si) and magnesium (Mg) has a beneficial effect on bone. Si in particular has been found to be essential for normal bone and cartilage growth and development. In vitro studies have shown that Mg plays very important roles in essential for normal growth and metabolism of skeletal tissue in vertebrates and can be detected as minor constituents in teeth and bone. Therefore, in this study, Si and Mg coatings on the hydroxyapatite film formed Ti-29Nb-xHf alloys by plasma electrolyte oxidation has been investigated using several experimental techniques. Ti-29Nb-xHf (x= 0, 3, 7 and 15wt%, mass fraction) alloys were prepared Ti-29Nb-xHf alloys of containing Hf up from 0 wt% to 15 wt% were melted by using a vacuum furnace. Ti-29Nb-xHf alloys were homogenized for 2 hr at $1050^{\circ}C$. The electrolyte was Si and Mg ions containing calcium acetate monohydrate + calcium glycerophosphate at room temperature. The microstructure, phase and composition of Si and Mg coated oxide surface of Ti-29Nb-xHf alloys were examined by FE-SEM, EDS, and XRD.

Hexagonal bolt, nut, fittings, and high-pressure valves with special alloy play an important role in many industrial products. Numerical analysis was conducted to obtain data for designing a new drawing system. This study aims to predict the rolling force of the new drawing system compared to that of the established drawing system. The rolling force of the new drawing system was predicted using numerical analysis by assuming that it is in proportion to deformation. The rolling forces of Mo, Ti, and W were approximately 1.4, 0.5, and 2.5 times those of SUS. Because the values of ultimate strength of special alloys were more close to numerical analysis, the values of ultimate strength could be used to predict the rolling force of the new drawing system without numerical analysis in field.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of investing conditions on the marginal discrepancy of conical telescope outer crown with Co-Cr-Ti alloy(Dentitan) and to compare the marginal discrepancy and the retention force of outer crowns using different pattern materials(plastic foil, casting wax, pattern resin). To evaluate the effects of investing conditions on the marginal discrepancy, patterns with plastic foil were invested under three different liquid/powder ratio conditions using phosphate bonded investment(Univest-nonprecious): standard, 10% decreased and 10% increased. At each liquid/powder ratio condition, metal ring was lined with single or double layers of ceramic ring liner. The marginal discrepancy of outer crown at different investing conditions was measured by ${\times}100$ compact measuring microscope(STM5, Olympus, Japan). For measurement of the marginal discrepancy and the retention force of outer crown using different pattern materials, the investing condition of 10% decreased liquid/powder ratio and double layers of ring liner was selected because this investing condition resulted in the best fit of outer crown. Marginal discrepancy was measured in the same way above and retention force on universal testing machine. Under the conditions of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. The thickness of ring liner had more influence on the marginal discrepancy of outer crown than the liquid/powder ratio, and the acceptable marginal fitness could not be expected at the investing condition directed by investment manufacturer 2. There were no differences in the marginal discrepancy of outer crown among three different pattern materials(P>0.05). 3. Casting wax showed the greatest retention force(1640g) of outer crown, followed by pattern resin(1110g), plastic foil(820g). However, there was no significant difference between plastic foil and pattern resin(P>0.05). 4. Plastic foil showed the least variation in marginal discrepancy and retention force.
The texture evolution during isothermal forging and subsequent heat treatment in Ti-48.5at%Al-0.6at%Mo alloy was investigated. Especially, in the present study, research interest was focused on the interrelation between lamellar volume fraction and textures varied with the change of heat-treated time and temperature. It was found that texture components having ND┴{302) and TD$\perp${100} with minor TD$\perp${111} were developed by isothermal forging. In addition, when the followed heat-treatment time and temperature increased from $1330^{\circ}C$/10h to $1350^{\circ}C$/20h respectively, both the lamellar volume fraction and the intensity of textures mentioned above also gradually increased. However, the tensile elongation at room temperature decreased oppositely, as the lamellar volume fraction increased. These results suggested that tensile properties of $\gamma$-TiAl with the nearly lamellar microstructure at room temperature were affected more strongly by the microstructural features such as lamellar volume fraction rather than by textures.
Grain morphology, phase stability and mechanical properties in binary Ti-Al alloys containing 43-52 mo1% Al have been investigated. Isothermal forging was used to control the grain sizes of these alloys in the range of 5 to $350{\mu}m$. Grain morphology and volume fraction of ${\alpha}_2$ phase were observed by optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy. Compressive properties were evaluated at room temperature, 1070 K, and 1270 K in an argon atmosphere. Work hardening is significant at room temperature, but it hardly took place at 1070 K and 1270 K because of dynamical recrystallization. The grain morphologies were determined as functions of aluminum content and processing conditions. The transus curve of ${\alpha}$ and ${\alpha}+{\gamma}$ shifted more to the aluminum-rich side than was the case in McCullough's phase diagram. Flow stress at room temperature depends strongly on the volume fraction of the ${\alpha}_2$ phase and the grain size, whereas flow stress at 1070 K is insensitive to the alloy composition or the grain size, and flow stress at 1270 K depends mainly on the grain size. The ${\alpha}_2$ phase in the alloys does not increase the proof stress at high temperatures. These observations indicate that improvement of both the proof stress at high temperature and the room temperature ductility should be achieved to obtain slightly Ti-rich TiAl base alloys.
Localized corrosion behavior of Ni-based Inconel 718 alloy was investigated by electrochemical anodic polarization techniques in NACE TM 0177 A solution of 5 wt% NaCl + 0.5 wt% acetic acid at room temperature. After the solution heat treated at 1080 ℃ for 2.5 h, Inconel 718 was age-hardened at 780 ℃ for 8 h. The microstructure of the alloy surface was investigated by optical microscopic or scanning electron microscopic technique. The austenitic phase with the presence of metal carbides was observed on the surface of Inconel 718. Metal-carbides such as Nb-Mo and Ti-carbide with diameters of approximately 10 and 3 ㎛, respectively, were formed in Inconel 718. Anodic polarization results revealed that localized corrosion was observed at the interface between austenitic phase of a substrate and metal carbides. Difference in electrochemical property between a metal carbide and an austenitic substrate could provide an initiation site for localized corrosion of Inconel 718 surface.
The joining methods of ceramics to metals which can be expected to obtain high temperature strength are mainly classified into the solid-state diffusion bonding method and the active brazing method. Between these two, the solid-state diffusion bonding method is given attentions as substituting method for active brazing method due to being capable of obtaining higher bonding strength at high temperature and accurate bonding. In this paper, the solid-state diffusion bonding of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ ceramics to Ni-Cr-Mo alloy steel (SNCM21) using insert metal was carried out. The insert metal employed in this study was experimentally home-made, Ag-Cu-Ti alloy. Influence of several bonding parameters of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$SNCM21 joint was quantitatively evaluated by bonding strength test, and microstructural analyses at the interlayer were performed by SEM/EDX. From above experiments, the optimum bonding condition of the solid-state diffusion bonding of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$/SNCM21 using Ag-Cu-Ti insert metal was determined. Futhermore, high temperature strength and thermal-shock properties of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$/SNCM21 joint were also examined. The results obtained are as follows. 1. The maximum bonding strength was obtained at the temperature of 95% melting point of insert metal. 2. The high temperature strength of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$/SNCM21 joint appeared to bemaximum value at test temperature 500.deg.C and the bonding strength with increasingtemperature showed parabolic curve. 3. The strength of thermal-shocked specimens was far deteriorated than those of as-bonded specimens. Especially, water-quenched specimen after heated up to 600.deg. C was directly fractured in quenching.

The scale of dendritic structure of a cast preform plays a key role in determining the mechanical properties of cast/forged products. In this study, casting experiments are carried out to reduce dendrite arm spacing (DAS) to smaller than 20 ${\mu}$m by increasing cooling rate of the mold and then to spheriodize dendritic structures by addition of alloying elements such as Zr and Ti-B. From the casting experiments, appropriate casting conditions for producing the cast preform of a motorcycle connecting rod are obtained. To obtain fine microstructures of the cast preform, mold temperature must set to be low whilst cooling rate being high. When cooling rate is 10 $^{\circ}C$/s, the size of DAS is 17.4 ${\mu}$m. And the degree of spheriodization of a grain in the cast preform is described by aspect ratio, which is defined as the ratio of major and minor radii of an elliptical grain. When 0.5% Zr and 0.24 % Ti+B are added to the molten aluminum alloy, the best aspect-ratio 0.75 is obtained. After forging the cast preform of a motorcycle connecting rod, the microstructure and mechanical properties of the cast preform are compared with those of the cast/forged product. Cast/forged products are superior in microstructure and in mechanical properties such as ultimate strength, elongation, and hardness.
This study has evaluated the weld metal solidification cracking behavior of several Ni base superalloys (Incoloy 825, Inconel 718 and Inconel 600). Austenitic stainless steels(304, 310S) were also included for comparison. In addition, a possible mechanism of solidification cracking in the fusion zone was suggested based on the extensive microstructural examinations with SEM, EDAX, TEM, SADP and AEM. The solidification cracking resistance of Ni base superalloys was found to be far inferior to that of austenitic stainless steels. The solidification cracking of Incoloy 825 and Inconel 718 was believel to be closely related with the Laves-austenite (Ti rich in 825 and Nb rich in 718) and MC-austenite eutectic phases formed along the grain boundaries during solidification. Cracking in Inconel 600 was always found along the grain boundaries which were enriched with Ti and P. Further, solidifidcation cracking resistance was dependent not only upon the type of love melting phases but also on the amount of the phases along the solidification grain boundaries.
