  • In this study, surface analysis of Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloys with addition of Ti and Mo for dental CAD/CAM use has been researched experimentally. The surface characteristics of the alloys were examined by Vickers hardness test, bonding strength test, surface roughness test, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. The shrinkage of the sintered Ni-Cr alloy alloy was slightly larger than that of Ni-Cr-Ti alloy, and larger than Co-Cr alloy. Also, the addition of Mo showed a tendency to decrease shrinkage somewhat. From the result of XRD analysis, NiCr, $Ni_3Cr$ and $Ni_3Ti$ were observed in the sintered Ni-13Cr-xTi and Ni-13Cr-xMo alloys. In addition, ${\sigma}-CrCo$, $Co_2Mo_3$ and $TiCo_2$ were formed in the sintered Co-Cr-xTi and Co-Cr-xMo alloys. Surface hardness of Ti and Mo added alloy was higher than those of Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloy. The bond strength between sintered alloy and porcelain was $16.1kgf/mm^2$ for Ni-13Cr alloy, $17.8kgf/mm^2$ for Ni-13Cr-5Ti alloy, and $8.2kgf/mm^2$ for Ni-13Cr-10Ti alloy, respectively.

  • The characteristics of hydrogen storage have been investigated in the Ti-Cr-Mo and Ti-Cr-V ternary alloys with bcc structure. The alloys were melted by arc furnace and remelted 4-5 times for homogeneity. The lattice parameters, microstructures and phases of the alloys were examined by SEM, EDX and XRD, and the Pressure-Composition isotherms of the alloys were measured. From these data the relationship of the maximum and effective hydrogen storage capacities vs. chemical composition, lattice parameter and the radius of tetrahedral site were analyzed and discussed. The results showed that all of these alloy, in the range of the this study, had mainly bcc solid solutions with small amount of Ti segregation due to a lower melting point of Ti compared with other elements. Lattice parameters of the alloys were very near to the atomic average values of lattice parameters of the constituent elements. It was also found that maximum hydrogen storage capacities of the Ti-Cr-Mo alloys increased with increasing Ti content and the radius of tetrahedral site but the effective hydrogen storage capacities decreased after showing the maximum. The hydrogen storage capacities of the Ti-Cr-V alloys were almost same even though the V contens were quite different from alloy to alloy and this could be attributed to the almost same Ti/Cr ratio of the alloys. The maximum effective hydrogen storage capacity of the Ti-Cr-Mo alloys was revealed at Ti content of about 40${\sim}$50 at% and radius of tetrahedral site of 0.43${\sim}$0.45 nm. The Ti-Cr-V alloys showed the hydrogen storage capacities of 3.0 wt% and effective hydrogen storage capacities of 1.5 wt%.

  • [ $MoSi_2$ ] alloys with Al, B or Nb were prepared by an advanced consolidation process that combined mechanical alloying with pulse discharge sintering (complex forming) to improve the mechanical properties. Their microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. The $MoSi_2$ alloys fabricated by complex forming method showed very fine microstructure when compared with the sample sintered from commercial $MoSi_2$ powders. Alloys made from powders milled in Ar gas had fewer silica or alumina phases as compared to their counterparts sintered from powders milled in air. In densification of the sintered body, addition of B was more effective than Al or Nb. Both Victors hardness and tensile test indicated that the alloy fabricated by the complex forming method showed better properties than the sample sintered from commercial $MoSi_2$ powders. The Al added alloy sintered from the powders milled in air had the superior mechanical properties due to the suppression of $SiO_2$ and formation of fine $Al_2O_3$ particles.

  • We investigate the austenite stability in nanocrystalline Fe-7%Mn-X%Mo (X = 0, 1, and 2) alloys fabricated by spark plasma sintering. Mo is known as a ferrite stabilizing element, whereas Mn is an austenite stabilizing element, and many studies have focused on the effect of Mn addition on austenite stability. Herein, the volume fraction of austenite in nanocrystalline Fe-7%Mn alloys with different Mo contents is measured using X-ray diffraction. Using a disk compressive test, austenite in Fe-Mn-Mo alloys is confirmed to transform into strain-induced martensite during plastic deformation by a disk d. The variation in austenite stability in response to the addition of Mo is quantitatively evaluated by comparing the k-parameters of the kinetic equation for the strain-induced martensite transformation.

  • The magnetic properties of Nd-Fe-B alloys of containing 4 at.% Nd have been studied for the development of new type rare-earth magnets. The amorphous phase of a melt-spun $Nd_{4}Fe_{85.5}B_{10.5}$ alloy is transformed into the phases which have a small amount of $Nd_{2}Fe_{14}B_{1}$ in ${\alpha}-Fe$ matrix by annealing above their crystallization temperature. The addition of Mo, Nb, V or Cu to $Nd_{4}Fe_{85.5}B_{10.5}$ alloy results in the reduction of grain size and the sub¬sequent improvement of the coercivity. The coercivity of $Nd_{4}Fe_{82}B_{10}M_{3}Cu_{1}$(M = Mo, Nb, V) alloys increases in the order of M = V < Nb < Mo and shows the highest value of 2.7 kOe when M = Mo. On the other hand, the rem¬anence of these alloys shows the opposite trend and the rn>st improved value of 1.35 T is observed when M = V.

  • CoCr-based alloys have been developed as wear-resistant materials owing to their excellent mechanical properties and strong wear resistance. The purpose of this study is to experimentally assess the frictional and wear characteristics of CoCr-based alloys slid against two different counter materials subjected to various normal forces to determine the expansion applicability of CoCr-based alloys. CoCrMo and CoCr alloys were selected as the target materials and NiCr and NiCrB alloys as counter materials. Experimental tests were performed using a pin-on-reciprocating plate tribo-tester under dry lubrication. Before performing the tests, the surface of the specimens was observed through confocal microscopy and the hardness was measured using a micro-Vickers hardness tester. The wear volume of the plate was calculated at the end of the tests using confocal microscope data, and the wear rate was quantitatively obtained based on Archard's wear law. From the results, the wear rates of the CoCrMo specimens that slid against NiCr and NiCrB are 7.69 × 10-6 ㎣/Nm and 5.26 × 10-6 ㎣/Nm, respectively. The wear rates of the CoCr specimens that slid against NiCr and NiCrB were higher than those of the CoCrMo specimens by factors of approximately 4 and 8, respectively. The CoCrMo specimens further exhibited lower friction characteristics than the CoCr specimens. The findings of this study will be useful for expanded applications of CoCr-based alloys as wear-resistant materials for various mechanical parts.

  • Alloys of $Ti46\%Al-2\%Mo-2\%Nb$ were oxidized between 800 and $1000^{\circ}C$ in air, and their oxidation characteristics were studied. The alloys displayed good oxidation resistance due mainly to the beneficial effects of Mo and Nb. The oxide scales formed consisted primarily of an outer $TiO_2$ layer, an intermediate $Al_{2}O_3-rich$ layer, and an inner mixed layer of ($TiO_{2}+Al_{2}O_3$). Molybdenum and niobium dissolved in the scale effectively improved oxidation resistance. They were mainly distributed in the inner mixed layer of ($TiO_{2}+Al_{2}O_3$).

  • The growth of solid particles in TiC-XC-2vo1.% and TiC-XC-30vo1.% Ni alloys, (where X=Zr, W or Mo) was fitted to the equation of the form $d^3$-${do}^3$=Kt during the liquid phase sintering at 1,673K. Also, the grain growth behavior decreased markedly with the addition of ${MO}_2$C or WC and increased with the addition of zrC. The contiguity was greater in the alloys with a smaller growth rate constant and especially, decreased by increasing the Ni content in the TiC-${MO}_2$C-Ni alloy. In addition, the effect of the addition of carbide on the grain growth of 2 vo1.% Ni alloys was found to be similar to that of 30vo1.% Ni alloys. Consequently, the grain growth mechanism cannot be explained by the usual solution / reprecipitation process, but can be explained in terms of a new growth velocity equation, which includes the effects of contiguous carbide grain boundaries in restricting the overall grain growth, as well as the area of the solid / liquid interface in the alloy.

  • In order to overcome the recrystallization embrittlement and irradiation embrittlement of Mo, which are major problems for its fusion applications, internally nitrided Mo alloys were prepared by a novel multi-step internal nitriding. Neutron irradiation was performed in the Japan Material Testing Reactor (JMTR). After irradiation, nitrided Mo alloys exhibited $\iota$ ower ductile-brittle transition temperature than irradiated TZM. These results suggested that multi-step internal nitriding was effective to the improvement in the embrittlement by irradiation. Transmission electron microscope observation revealed that TiN particles precipitated by nitriding acted as a sink for irradiation-induced defects.

  • Alloys of $Fe_3$Al, $Fe_3$Al-6Cr, $Fe_3$Al-4Cr-1Mo, $Ni_3$Al, and $Ni_3$Al-2.8Cr were oxidized at $1000^{\circ}C$ in air, and the oxide scales formed were studied using XRD. SEM, EPMA, and TEM. The oxide scales that formed on $Fe_3$Al-based alloys consisted primarily of $\alpha$-$Al_2$$O_3$ containing a small amount of dissolved Fe and Cr ions, whereas those that formed on $Ni_3$Al-based alloys consisted primarily of $\alpha$-$Al_2$$O_3$, together with a small amount of $NiAl_2$$O_4$, NiO and dissolved Cr ions. For the entire alloys tested, nonadherent oxide scales formed, and voids were inevitably existed at the scale-matrix interface.
