  • Layered Na0.7[Ni0.05Mn0.95]O2 compounds have been synthesized by a sol-gel method, using glycolic acid as a chelating agent. Na0.7[Ni0.05Mn0.95]O2 precursors w ere used to prepare layered lithium manganese oxides by ion exchange for Na by Li, using LiBr in hexanol. Powder X-ray diffraction shows the layered Na0.7[Ni0.05Mn0.95]O2 has an O3 type structure, which exhibits a large reversible capacity of approximately 190 mA h g-1 in the 2.4-4.5 V range. Na0.7[Ni0.05Mn0.95]O2 powders undergo transformation to spinel during cycling.

  • The crystallographic properties and cationic distribution of $M_{0.2}Fe_{2.8}O_4$ (M =Mn, Ni, Cu) and $Fe_3O_4$ thin films prepared by sol-gel method have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and conversion electron M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy (CEMS). The ionic valence, preferred site, and hyperfine field of Fe ions of the ferrites could be obtained by analyzing the CEMS spectra. The $M_{0.2}Fe_{2.8}O_4$ films were found to maintain cubic spinel structure as in $Fe_3O_4$ with the lattice constant slightly decreased for Ni substitution and increased for Mn and Cu substitution from that of $Fe_3O_4$. Analyses on the CEMS data indicate that $Mn^{2+}$ and $Ni^{2+}$ ions substitute octahedral $Fe^{2+}$ sites mostly, while $Cu^{2+}$ ions substitute both the octahedral and tetrahedral sites. The observed intensity ratio $A_B/A_A$ of the CEMS subspectra of the samples exhibited difference from the theoretical value. It is interpreted as due to the effect of the M substitution for A and B on the Debye temperature of the site. The relative line-broadening of the B-site CEMS subspectra can be explained by the dispersion of magnetic hyperfine fields due to random distribution of M cations in the B sites.

  • $NiO{\cdot}(Co_{0.25}Mn_{0.75})_2O_3$(Mn-Ni-Co) and $Ba_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}TiO_3$(BST) thick films were screen printed on Pt patterned alumina substrate to investigate the effects of sintering temperature on humidity and temperature sensing properties of ceramic sensors. A raise in sintering temperature increased resistance and B constant of the Mn-Ni-Co temperature sensor. This may have derived from the synergic effects of the reduction in charge carriers caused by the substitution of Co for Mn as well as the formation of microcracks from the difference in thermal expansion coefficients. Dependence of resistance on humidity of the Mn-Ni-Co temperature sensor, however, was not found. BST films sintered at temperatures in the range of $1100^{\circ}C$ to $1150^{\circ}C$ showed excellent humidity sensing properties. The BST humidity sensor was faster in its response than the Mn-Ni-Co temperature sensor. The humidity sensor, however, proved to be unstable under various temperatures, suggesting a need for a temperature stabilizing device. In contrast, the Mn-Ni-Co temperature sensor was stable under humid conditions.

  • The $ZnGa_2O_4$:Mn phosphor was synthesized through solid-state reactions at the various molar ratio of Mn from 0.002 % to 0.01 %. Structural and optical properties of the $ZnGa_2O_4$:Mn phosphor was investigated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), and cathodoluminescence (CL) measurements. The XRD patterns show that the Mn-doped $ZnGa_2O_4$ has a (311) main peak and a spinel phase. Also the emission wavelength shifts from 420 to 510 nm in comparison with $ZnGa_2O_4$ when Mn is doped in $ZnGa_2O_4$. These results indicate that $ZnGa_2O_4$:Mn phosphors hold promise for potential applications in field-emission display devices with high brightness operating in green spectral regions.

  • For the study of environmental application of natural zeolites (NZ) and red mud (RM), which are discharged from various industrial fields, the catalytic ozonation of 2-butaone (methyl ethyl ketone, MEK) was performed using the Mn-loaded NZ prepared according to the Mn content of 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 wt%. By the addition of Mn to NZ, the BET (Brunaure-Emmett-Teller) specific surface area of Mn/NZ catalysts decreased while the ratio of Mn3+/[Mn3++Mn4+] intensively increased. Besides, the addition of Mn component to NZ increased the ratio of adsorbed oxygen (Oadsorbed) toward lattice oxygen (Olattice), Oadsorbed/Olattice from 0.076 of NZ to 0.465 of 10 wt% Mn/NZ according to the amount of Mn. It is known that the proportion of two species, Mn3+ and Oadsorbed, would greatly affect the catalytic activity. However, the balancing between the paired species, Mn3+ vs. Mn4+ and Oadsorbed vs. Olattice might be more essential for the catalytic ozonation of MEK at room temperature. Among the Mn-loaded NZ catalysts, the 3 wt% Mn/NZ showed the best activity for the removal of MEK and ozone. The 5, 7, and 10 wt% Mn/NZ catalysts are slightly inferior to the 3 wt% Mn/NZ. Compared to the pristine NZ, the Mn/NZ catalysts showed better activity for the catalytic ozonation of MEK. In addition, the 3 wt% Mn/NZ was confirmed to have the most available acid sites among them by the analysis of NH3-TPD (temperature programmed desorption). This might be the major reason for the best catalytic activity of 3 wt% Mn/NZ together with the adjusted distribution ratios of Mn3+/Mn4+ and Oadsorbed/Olattice. Considering the result of 3 wt% Mn/NZ, the 3 wt% Mn/RM was prepared to perform the catalytic activity for the removal of MEK and ozone, but the efficiency of 3 wt% Mn/RM was significantly lower than that of the 3 wt% Mn/NZ.

  • Synthesis of the spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ by emulsion method was investigated. $LiOH.H_2O \;and \;Mn(NO_3)_2.6H_2O$ were used as starting materials to prepare mixed aqueous solution (0.5 mol/$\ell$ for the $LiMn_2O_4$). Kerosene, paraffin oil and span 80 were used for organic phase. The aqueous solutioin and organic phase were mixed in the ratio of 2:1 and emulsified at the speed of 4000 rpm for 5 min. The prepared emulsions were dropped into the petroleum heated at $170^{\circ}C$ to evaporate water in the silicon oil bath, dried at $120^{\circ}C$ in the oven the remove petroleum and calcined at temperature ranges from 600 to $900^{\circ}C$ for 48 hrs. The characteristics of powders were investigated by XRD, SEM, BET and electrochemical properties of synthesized cathode materials were measured with Galvanostatic system. $Li_{1.05}Mn_2O_4$ calcined at $800^{\circ}C$ for 48 hrs showed initial discharge capacity of 125.9mAH/g.

  • The effect of sintering temperature on the electrochemical property of $LiMn_2O_4$ was investigated. Results showed that the particle size was increased at higher sintering temperatures while the initial capacity was decreased after high temperature sintering. Capacity fading, on the other hand, was suppressed at lower sintering temperatures since the sintering at higher temperatures (${\geq}800^{\circ}C$) increased the Mn ions with a lower oxidation state ($Mn^{+3}$), which induced structural instability during cycling due to dissolution of Mn ions into the electrolyte. In particular, $LiMn_2O_4$ sintered above $830^{\circ}C$ showed severe capacity fading (capacity loss was 38% of initial capacity) by lower coulombic efficiency due to the abnormally increased particle size.

  • Pure CaO, Mn-doped CaO, Mn/CaO, and K/CaO catalysts were prepared and tested as catalysts for the oxidative coupling of methane in the temperature range of 600 to 800$^{\circ}C$ to investigate the effects of Mn- and K-addition on the catalytic activity of calcium oxide. To characterize the catalysts, X-ray powder diffraction(XRD), XPS, SEM, DSC, and TG analyses were performed. The catalytic reaction was carried out in a single-pass flow reactor using on-line gas chromatography system. Normalized reaction conditions were generally $p(CH_4)/p(O_2)=250$ Torr/50 Torr, total feed flow rate=30 mL/min, and 1 atm of total pressure with He being used as diluent gas. Among the catalysts tested, 6.3 mol% Mn-doped CaO catalyst showed the best $C_2$ yield of 8.0% with a selectivity of 43.2% at 775$^{\circ}C$. The $C_2$ selectivity increased on lightly doped CaO catalysts, while decreased on heavily doped CaO([Mn] > 6.3 mol%) catalysts. 6 wt.% Mn/CaO and 6 wt.% K/CaO catalysts showed the $C_2$ selectivities of 13.2% and 30.9%, respectively, for the reaction. Electrical conductivities of CaO and Mn-doped CaO were measured in the temperature range of 500 to 1000$^{\circ}C$ at Po2's of $10^{-3}\; to\;10^{-1}\;atm.$ The electrical conductivity was decreased with Mn-doping and increased with increasing $P0_2$in the range of $10^{-3}\;to\;10^{-1}\;atm,$ indicating the specimens to be p-type semiconductors. It was suggested that the interstitial oxygen ions formed near the surface can activate methane and the formation of interstitial oxygen ions was discussed on the basis of solid-state chemistry.
