Growth and optical conductivity properties for MnAl2S4 single crystal thin film by hot wall epitaxy method (Hot Wall Epitaxy(HWE)법에 의한 MnAl2S4 단결정 박막 성장과 광전도 특성)

  • A stoichiometric mixture of evaporating materials for $MnAl_2S_4$ single crystal thin films was prepared from horizontal electric furnace. To obtain the single crystal thin films, $MnAl_2S_4$ mixed crystal was deposited on thoroughly etched semi-insulating GaAs(100) substrate by the Hot Wall Epitaxy (HWE) system. The source and substrate temperatures were $630^{\circ}C$ and $410^{\circ}C$, respectively. The crystalline structure of the single crystal thin films was investigated by the photoluminescence and double crystal X-ray diffraction (DCXD). The temperature dependence of the energy band gap of the $MnAl_2S_4$ obtained from the absorption spectra was well described by the Varshni's relation, $E_g(T)=3.7920eV-5.2729{\times}10^{-4}eV/K)T^2/(T+786 K)$. In order to explore the applicability as a photoconductive cell, we measured the sensitivity (${\gamma}$), the ratio of photocurrent to dark current (pc/dc), maximum allowable power dissipation (MAPD) and response time. The results indicated that the photoconductive characteristic were the best for the samples annealed in S vapour compare with in Mn, Al, air and vacuum vapour. Then we obtained the sensitivity of 0.93, the value of pc/dc of $1.10{\times}10^7$, the MAPD of 316 mW, and the rise and decay time of 14.8 ms and 12.1 ms, respectively.

  • PC-type copolymers were synthesized using MPEG(Polyethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate, Mn=2080) to different mole ratios of mono-carboxylic acid(AA : Acylic acid). The mole ratios of AA were 2, 3, 4. To investigate effects of PC-type co-polymers on the hydration of cement, experiments involving FT-IR, XRD, SEM have been analysed with cement paste specimens to 1, 3, 28 day. The hydration reaction rate of cement paste was slightly delayed at 1 day, due to increase in molar ratio of [AA] / [MPEG], it was recovered in the days after.

  • The photocatalytic (PC) activity of anatase titania nanoparticles can be improved through codoping with transition metals and nitrogen. In addition, the PC activity can also be improved by creating monodisperse, mesoporous nanoparticles of titania. The question naturally arose as to whether combining these two characteristics would result in further improvement in the PC activity or not. Herein, we describe the synthesis and photocatalytic characteristics of codoped, monodisperse anatase titania. The transition metals tested in the polydisperse and the monodisperse forms were Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu. In each case, it was found that the monodisperse version had a higher PC activity compared to the corresponding polydisperse version.

  • To prepare $Mn^{4+}$-activated $K_2TiF_6$ phosphor, a precipitation method without using hydrofluoric acid (HF) was designed. In the synthetic reaction, to prevent the decomposition of $K_2MnF_6$, which is used as a source of $Mn^{4+}$ activator, $NH_5F_2$ solution was adopted in place of the HF solution. Single phase $K_2TiF_6$:$Mn^{4+}$ phosphors were successfully synthesized through the designed reaction at room temperature. To acquire high luminance of the phosphor, the reaction conditions such as the type and concentration of the reactants were optimized. Also, the optimum content of $Mn^{4+}$ activator was evaluator based on the emission intensity. Photoluminescence properties such as excitation and emission spectrum, decay curve, and temperature dependence of PL intensity were investigated. In order to examine the applicability of this material to a white LED, the electroluminescence property of a pc-WLED fabricated by combining the $K_2TiF_6$:$Mn^{4+}$ phosphor with a 450 nm blue-LED chip was measured.

Design of a Remote Control Application Using Mobile Phone with WPAN Platform

  • In this paper, we design a mobile phone based remote control system for PC using SKT WPAN platform and compare the presented platform with that of Windows Mobile. The usability of WPAN is one of the main issues which should be considered for the ubiquitous services. For easy development and easy use of the WPAN applications, SKT WPAN platform provides abstract WPAN APIs and WPAN Application Manager for ubiquitous services. In this paper, we implement a remote control application using the WPAN platform and show the validity of the platform comparing with other platforms. In the implemented application, we use WPAN abstract APIs on the mobile phone side and a general Bluetooth APIs on the PC for a connection between phone and PC. Through the implementation and comparison, we show that the WPAN application can be easily developed with WPAN platform.

Magnetic Properties of Permalloy(PB, PC) Strips Fabricated by Powder Rolling Process (분말 압연에 의해 제조된 퍼말로이(PB, PC)의 자성 특성)

  • Two grades of Permalloy strips, Fe-45Ni(PB) and Fe-78Ni-4Mo-5Cu(PC) were fabricated by powder rolling process from elemental powder mixtures. The roll compacted green strips were sintered, homogenized, cold rolled with or without an intermediate annealing and finally heat treated to measure magnetic properties. For a given thickness reduction, rolling with an intermediate annealing was found more effective to achieve a full densification with no visible micropores and also to obtain better magnetic properties. Increasing the final rolling reduction also produced a marked improvement of the magnetic properties whereas the cooling rate during the final heat treatment has little effect in both grades. Addition of a small amount, 0.4% Mn slightly degraded the properties. As an overall, The PM strips produced via powder rolling yielded the similar soft magnetic properties to the corresponding commercial grades produced via wrought processing.

  • PC-type copolymers were synthesized using MPEG(polyethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate, Mn=2080) to different mole ratios of mono-carboxylic acid(AA : acylic acid). The mole ratios of AA were 2, 3, 4 and PC-type terpolymers were synthesized using mono-, dicarboxylic acid(ITA : itaconic acid MAL : maleic acid) with the same graft chain. To investigate effects of PC-type co-, ter-polymers on the hydration of cement experiments involving FT-IR, XRD, DSC, SEM have been analysed with cement paste specimens to 1, 3, 28 day. The hydration reaction rate of cement paste was slightly delayed at 1 day, due to increase in molar ratio of [AA]/[MPEG], it was recovered in the days after and the copolymer was more active than the terpolymer, because of low carboxylic acid content PC-type copolymers applied 2AA-type were fastest copolymer on hydration reaction of cement paste to 3 day and the more AA mole ratios increased, the more hydration was retarded.

Promoting Effect of Hydrogen Peroxide on 1-Methyl-4-phenylpyridinium-induced Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Cell Death in PC12 Cells

  • The promoting effect of hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) against the cytotoxicity of 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ($MPP^+$) in differentiated PC12 cells was assessed by measuring the effect on the mitochondrial membrane permeability. Treatment of PC12 cells with $MPP^+$ resulted in the nuclear damage, decrease in the mitochondrial transmembrane potential, cytosolic accumulation of cytochrome c, activation of caspase-3, increase in the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and depletion of GSH. Addition of $H_2O_2$ enhanced the $MPP^+-induced$ nuclear damage and cell death. Catalase, Carboxy-PTIO, Mn-TBAP, N-acetylcysteine, cyclosporin A and trifluoperazine inhibited the cytotoxic effect of $MPP^+$ in the presence of $H_2O_2$. Addition of $H_2O_2$ promoted the change in the mitochondrial membrane permeability, ROS formation and decrease in GSH contents due to $MPP^+$ in PC12 cells. The results show that the $H_2O_2$ treatment promotes the cytotoxicity of $MPP^+$ against PC12 cells. $H_2O_2$ may enhance the $MPP^+$-induced viability loss in PC12 cells by promoting the mitochondrial membrane permeability change, release of cytochrome c and subsequent activation of caspase-3, which is associated with the increased formation of ROS and depletion of GSH. The findings suggest that $H_2O_2$ as a promoting agent for the formation of mitochondrial permeability transition may enhance the neuronal cell injury caused by neurotoxins.

  • The impedance of the positive active material $LiMnO_2$ is measured by the changeable trend following the time. The charge capacities of single cell and each cells of four made with thin film prepared in the dry box are measured after measuring the impedance with the interval of 0, 24, 48 and 72 hours. In result, the impedance through the delaying time is not enhanced continuously as result of the time. The variation of capacity enhanced is not watched as the result of the delaying time that all together of the positive thin film and the reference is soaked in the solution of electrolyte of 1M PC $LiClO_4$. But it can be known to increase the discharge capacities as that the impeditive value is decrease.

The Effects of Different Substrates on the Growth, Yield, and Nutritional Composition of Two Oyster Mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus cystidiosus)

  • The study was conducted to compare the effects of different agro-wastes on the growth, yield, and nutritional composition of oyster mushrooms Pleurotus ostreatus (PO) and Pleurotus cystidiosus (PC). Seven substrate formulas including sawdust (SD), corncob (CC), sugarcane bagasse (SB) alone and in combination of 80 : 20, 50 : 50 ratio between SD and CC, SD and SB were investigated. The results indicated that different substrate formulas gave a significant difference in total colonization period, characteristics of fruiting bodies, yield, biological efficiency (BE), nutritional composition and mineral contents of two oyster mushrooms PO and PC. The results showed that increasing CC and SB reduced C/N ratio, and enhanced some mineral contents (Ca, P, and Mg) of substrate formulas. The increased amount of CC and SB of substrate formulas enhanced protein, ash, mineral contents (Ca, K, Mg, Mn, and Zn) of fruiting bodies of both mushrooms. Substrates with 100% CC and 100% SB were the most suitable substrate formulas for cultivation of oyster mushrooms PO and PC in which they gave the highest values of cap diameter, stipe thickness, mushroom weight, yield, BE, protein, fiber, ash, mineral content (Ca, K, and Mg) and short stipe length. However, substrate formula 100% CC gave the slowest time for the first harvest of both mushrooms PO and PC (46.02 days and 64.24 days, respectively). It is also found that the C/N ratio of substrate formulas has close correlation with total colonization period, mushroom weight, yield, BE and protein content of mushroom PO and PC.
