  • Objectives: The main objective of this study is to assess the levels of hazardous substances in floor dust in primary schools located in the city of Busan in Korea. Materials and Methods: An on-site investigation of three primary schools was performed between April and May 2013. The hazardous substances measured in this study were 14 heavy metals (Cu, Fe, Pb, Mn, Ni, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, Al, Sn, Co, Mo and Si) and the biological agents were bacteria, fungi and endotoxin). Results: Among the heavy metals, Cd, Co, Pb and Cr were not detected in the floor dust from the three primary schools. The mean levels of other heavy metals were as follows: $20({\pm}10)ng/cm^2$ for As, $30({\pm}20)ng/cm^2$ for Al, $5({\pm}4)ng/cm^2$ for Sn, $20({\pm}20)ng/cm^2$ for Mo, $1,340({\pm}620)ng/cm^2$ for Si, $110({\pm}100)ng/cm^2$ for Cu, $240({\pm}50)ng/cm^2$ for Fe, $30({\pm}30)ng/cm^2$ for Mn, $10({\pm}10)ng/cm^2$ for Ni, and $50({\pm}30)ng/cm^2$ for Zn. It was found that mean concentrations of bacteria, fungi and endotoxin in the floor dust of primary schools were $4.7{\time}10^7({\pm}2.2{\time}10^7)cfu/cm^2$, $6.3{\time}10^6({\pm}6.4{\time}10^6)cfu/cm^2$, and $8,140({\pm}5,801)EU/cm^2$, respectively. The predominant species identified in the floor dust of the primary schools were Pseudomonas spp. for bacteria and Penicillium spp.,Cladosporidium spp.,and Aspergillus spp. for fungi, which would be somewhat similar to the microbial distribution pattern of other general environments. Conclusions: Based on the results obtained from this study, the levels of heavy metals, microbes and endotoxin distributed in the floor dust of primary school were higher than those reported for other general facilities. Thus, preventive measures should be prepared for the health care of children.

  • $SiC/Si_3N_4$ composites were prepared by mixing ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ powder to $\alpha$-SiC powder in the range of 10 to 30 vol% with 10 vol% interval. 6 wt% of $Al_2O_3$ and $Y_2O_3$ were also added respectively as sintering aids. Then, pressureless sintering was performed at 1,78$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours in $N_2$ gas. In the case of adding 20 vol% of ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ powder, the relative desity to theoretical value and the flexutal strength were 92 % and 3,560 MPa, respectively. The smallest relative worn amount thereof was $2.68{\times}10^{-3}\;mm^2$ for 20 vol% ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$. The composite containing 30 vol % of ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ powder showed the highest fracture toughness $(K_{1c})$ of $4.9\;MN/m^{3/2}$, although the reduction of the wear resistance due to the effect of the pores was observed.

  • Many Quaternary faults are recognized as thin gouge and narrow cataclastic zone juxtaposing the Bulguksa granite and Quaternary deposit bed in the eastern block of the Using Fault, Korea: Gaegok 1, Caegok 2, Singye, Madong Wonwonsa and Jinhyeon faults. This study was performed to calculate chemical change, volume change, silica loss and fluid-rock ratio taken place in gouge zones of these Quaternary faults using XRF, XRD, EPMA. The chemical compositions of fault rocks reveal that the fault gouges are depleted in $SiO_2,\;Na_2\;O,and\;K_2O$ and enriched in $Al_2O_3,\;Fe_2O_3,\;P_2O_5,\;MgO,\;MnO,\;CaO,\;and\;LOI(H_2O+CO_2)$ relative to protoliths. The fact that there is enrichment of relatively immobile elements and depletion of the more soluble elements in the fault gouges relative to protoliths can be explained by fluid-assisted volume loss of $56\%$ for Caegok 1 fault, $22\%$ for Caegok 2 fault,$34\%$, for Singye fault, $8\%$ for Madong fault, $2\%$ for the Wonwonsa fault and $53\%$ for the linhyeon fault. Madong fault and Wonwonsa fault where ratios of the volume change, silica loss and fluid-rock are low might have acted as a closed system for fluid activity, whereas Caegok 1 fault and Jinhyeon fault with high ratios in those factors be an open system. The volumetric fluid-rock ratios range $10^2\sim10^4$ for all faults, being highest in Caegok 1 fault and Jinhyeon fault whose fluid activity was most significant.

  • We have investigated structural and electrical properties of $PbZr_{0.3}Ti_{0.7}O_{3}$ (PZT) thin films deposited by pulsed laser deposition methods. PZT thin films have been deposited on $LaMnO_3$ (LMO) bottom electrodes with $LaAlO_3$ (LAO) substrates during different deposition times. High-resolution x-ray diffraction data have shown that all the PZT films and bottom electrodes are highly oriented. The thickness of each film is determined by field-emission scanning electron microscope. We have also observed root mean square roughness by using atomic force microscopy mode, and local polarization distribution and retention behavior of a ferroelectric domain by using piezoelectric force microscopy mode. A PZT/LMO structure has shown good ferroelectric and retention properties as the media for nano-storage devices.

  • A Streptomyces spp. strain SY 79-1 which was capable of producing metal protease was isolated from soil. The optimal pH and temperature of the protease were around pH 8.0 and $45^{\circ}C$, respectively. The stable pH range of the enzyme was between pH 6.0 to 8.0. The enzyme was stable at $45^{\circ}C$, but it lost the activity about 75 % for 5 min and completely for 30 min when it was treated at $60^{\circ}C$. The activity of the enzyme was inhibited by $Hg^{++},\;Cu^{++},\;Ag^{+}$ and activated by $Mg^{++},\;Mn^{++},\;Co^{++},\;but\;Fe^{++},\;Ca^{++},\;Pb^{++}\;and\;Al^{3+}$ did not affect enzyme activity. This enzyme was strongly inhibited by EDTA, but was not inhibited by 2, 4-DNP, ${\rho}$-CMB, ${\varepsilon}$-aminocaproic acid, cysteine, thiourea, citric acid, oxalic acid and sodium arsenate. When cobalt was added to the EDTA-denatured enzyme, the activity of the enzyme was restored.

  • This study was performed to investigate the removal characteristics of heavy metals in Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) using pellet-type Zeolite-StarFish ceramics (ZSF ceramics), in which natural zeolite and starfish were mixed and calcined with wood flour. Kinetic experiment showed the removal reaction of heavy metals by ZSF ceramics reached the equilibrium status within 3 hours. The optimal calcination temperature range for removal of heavy metals was measured to be $800{\sim}1,000^{\circ}C$. The calcination time had little effect on the removal of heavy metal in AMD. The adequate dose of ceramics was shown to be 1.0~1.2 % for removal of heavy metals in AMD. High removal efficiencies of heavy metals (Al, As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn) in AMD, more than 95 % except for Pb, were obtained under the condition of dose of ceramics more than 1.0 %. The removal efficiencies of heavy metals increased with increasing mixing concentration of wood flour. The adequate mixing concentration of wood flour was observed to be 10 %. The batch experimental results exhibited that the ZSF ceramics could act as an efficient ceramics for removal of heavy metals in AMD and the wood flour could provide porous ZSF ceramics with enhanced removal efficiency of heavy metals.

  • Objectives: The hazardous metals content of medicinal herbs distributed in the Daegu area was investigated, and the place of origin and the content of herbicides and medicinal components were studied. Methods: An analysis of hazardous metals content (10 types) was carried out on 164 samples of 99 types of herbal medicines. Among the total samples, 45 were domestic and 119 were imported. Hg was analyzed by the amalgamation method. Other hazardous metals content (nine types) was digested using the microwave method and measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Results: The mean values of the hazardous metals content in the herbal medicines were Pb 1.0833 mg/kg, As 0.0136 mg/kg, Cd 0.0840 mg/kg, Cr 3.7120 mg/kg, Cu 4.2666 mg/kg, Mn 40.080 mg/kg, Ni 1.4330 mg/kg, Sb 0.1053 mg/kg, Al 202.64 mg/kg and Hg 0.0062 mg/kg. Three of the samples violated the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) regulatory guidance on cadmium (less than 0.3 mg/kg). The measured values of heavy metals (Pb, As, Cd, Hg) showed levels below the recommended levels for herbal medicines in MFDS regulatory guidance. In the comparison of domestic samples with imported herbal medicines, it was found that one domestic and two imported samples surpassed the maximum residue limits for cadmium. The median values of the hazardous metals detected in the three medicinal parts of the root, leaf (branch), and flower (seed and fruit) were as follows. Cr, Ni, Sb and Al were highly detected in roots, Pb, Cd, Mn, Hg in leafs (branch), and As, Cu in flowers (seed and fruit). Conclusion: There were various kinds of hazardous metals which were detected at high levels according to the place of origin of the medicinal herb and the parts the plant. For hazardous metals for which no acceptance criteria have been established, safety standards should be further studied and managed to ensure the safety of herbal medicines.

  • This study was investigated on properties and thermostability of gelatin-degrading proteinases in the fruit of Actinidia chinensis (kiwifruit) for the industrial application. Three gelatin-degrading proteinases (PI, PII and PIII) were detected from the pulp of fruits. The molecular weights of these proteinases, PI, PII and PIII, were approximately 220 kD, 51 kD, and 26 kD respectively, on the basis of gelatin-containing SDS-PACE. The optimum pH of these proteinases ranged from 2.0 to 5.0 with a maximal activity at pH 4.0. These proteinases had a high sensitivity to E-64 and iodoacetate which are cysteine protease inhibitors, and required DTT, cysteine, and $\beta$-mercaptoethanol for their activities which are stimulators for cysteine proteases. These results indicate that these proteinases are cysteine proteinases and the proteinase PIII is actinidin (EC 3.4.22.14), based on the molecular weight and/or susceptibility against proteinase inhibitors. These proteinases were strongly activated by $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Mn^{2+}$, whereas strongly inhibited by Zn$^{2+}$ and Hg$^{2+}$. However, these proteinases have slightly different susceptibility against other cations ($Ca^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Al^{3+}$, $Ca^{3+}$. The temperature stability of proteinase PIII was more stable than proteinases PI and PII. Moreover, proteinase PIII remained stable below $50^{\circ}C$ for 48hr, showing the residual activity above 75% of the enzyme activity.

  • This study was performed to define the effects of various levels (0∼15%) of dietary yellow loess on serum constituents in Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli). After seven weeks of feeding trial, hemoglobin, protein, albumin, triglyceride, cholesterol and bilirubin in serum were investigated. Chemical composition of yellow loess were composed of SiO2 49.80%, Al2O3 27.50%, FeO3 8.33%, CaO 0.09%, MgO 0.64%, K2O 1.62%, Na2O 0.12%, P2O5 0.20% and MnO 0.03%. Serum levels of total protein and albumin showed higher values the yellow loess addition groups than the control group, and the values of protein and albumin were increased with dietary yellow loess level. Serum levels of triglyceride and cholesterol in the groups fed yellow loess were lower than those in the group fed control diet. And these values decreased with dietary yellow loess level up 10%, then increased with 15% yellow loess diet. The values of bilirubin in serum significantly decreased with dietary yellow loess level up 10%, then increased with 15% yellow loess diet. Hemoglobin level from rockfish fed 7.5% and 10% yellow loess diet were significantly higher than those from fed the control diet.
