  • $LiNi_{0.5-x}Co_{2x}Mn_{0.5-x}O_{2}$ (x = 0, 0.1, 1/6, 1.2, 0.3) were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. The crystal structure was analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction and Rietveld refinement. $LiNi_{0.5-x}Co_{2x}Mn_{0.5-x}O_{2}$ samples give single phases of hexagonal layered structures with a space group of R-3m for x = 0.1, 1/6, 0.2, and 0.3. The lattice constants of a and c-axis were decreased with the increase in Co contents in samples. The thickness of MO2 slab was decreased and inter-slab distance was increased with the increase in Co contents in $LiNi_{0.5-x}Co_{2x}Mn_{0.5-x}O_{2}$. According to XPS analysis, the valence states of Mn, Co, and Ni in the sample are mainly +4, +3, and +3, respectively. The discharge capacity of 202 mAh/g at 0.1C-rate in the potential range of 4.7 - 3.0 V was obtained in $LiNi_{0.3}Co_{0.4}Mn_{0.3}O_2$ sample, and $LiNi_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Mn_{0.4}O_2$ gives excellent cycle performance in the same potential range.

  • The electronic state and chemical bonding of $\beta$-MnO$_2$ with transition metal dopants were theoretically investigated by DV-X$_{\alpha}$ (the discrete variational X$_{\alpha}$) method, which is a sort of the first principles molecular orbital method using the Hartree-Fock-Slater approximation. The calculations were performed with a $_Mn_{14}$ MO$_{56}$ )$^{-52}$ (M = transition metals) cluster model. The electron energy level, the density of states (DOS), the overlap population, the charge density distribution, and the net charges, were calculated. The energy level diagram of MnO$_2$ shows the different band structure and electron occupancy between the up spin states and down spin states. The dopant levels decrease between the conduction band and the valence band with the increase of the atomic number of dopants. The covalency of chemical bonding was shown to increase and ionicity decreased in increasing the atomic number of dopants. Calculated results were discussed on the basis of the interaction between transition metal 3d and oxygen 2p orbital. In conclusion it is expected that when the transition metals are added to MnO$_2$ the band gap decreases and the electronic conductivity increases with the increase of the atomic number of dopants. the atomic number of dopants.

  • By employing photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), the electronic structure of the candidate half-metallic antiferromagnet of $Mn_3Ga$ Heusler compound has been investigated. We have studied two ball-milled $Mn_3Ga$ powder samples, one after annealing and the other without annealing, respectively. Based on the Mn 2p XAS study, we have found that Mn ions are nearly divalent in $Mn_3Ga$ and that the Mn ions having the locally octahedral symmetry and those having the locally tetrahedral symmetry are both present in $Mn_3Ga$. We have found relatively good agreement between the measured valence-band PES spectrum of $Mn_3Ga$ and the calculated density of states, which is in agreement with the half-metallic electronic structure of $Mn_3Ga$.

  • Strontium doped lanthanum manganite (LSM) with perovskite structure for SOFC cathode material shows high electrical conductivity and good chemical stability, whereas the electrical conductivity at intermediate temperature below $800^{\circ}C$ is not sufficient due to low oxygen ion conductivity. The approach to improve electrical conductivity is to make more oxygen vacancies by substituting alkaline earths (such as Ca, Sr and Ba) for La and/or a transition metal (such as Fe, Co and Cu) for Mn. Among various cathode materials, $LaSrMnCuO_3$ has recently been suggested as the potential cathode materials for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). As for the Cu doping at the B-site, it has been reported that the valence change of Mn ions is occurred by substituting Cu ions and it leads to formation of oxygen vacancies. The electrical conductivity is also affected by doping element at the A-site and the co-doping effect between A-site and B-site should be described. In this study, the $La_{1-x}Sr_xMn_{0.8}Cu_{0.2}O_{3{\pm}{\delta}}$ ($0{\leq}x{\leq}0.4$) systems were synthesized by a combined EDTA-citrate complexing process. The crystal structure, morphology, thermal expansion and electrical conductivity with different Sr contents were studied and their co-doping effects were also investigated.

  • Valence states and electronic structures of Cr-doped $Nd_{1/2}A_{1/2}Mn_{1-y}Cr_{y}O_3$(NAMO; A=Ca, Sr) manganites have been investigated using x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy (PES). All the Cr-doped NAMO systems exhibit the clear metallic Fermi edges in the Mn $e_{g}$ PES spectra near $E_{F}$. The spectral intensity at $E_{F}$ is higher for Cr-doped N $d_{l}$ 2/S $r_{l}$ 2/Mn $O_3$(NSMO) than for Cr-doped N $d_{l}$ 2/C $a_{l}$ 2/Mn $O_3$ (NCMO), reflecting the stronger metallic nature for NSMO than for NCMO. The measured Cr 2p XAS spectra are found to be very similar to that of C $r_2$ $O_3$, indicating that Cr ions in Cr-doped NAMO are in the trivalent C states ( $t^3$$_{2g}$). The Cr 2p XAS data are consistent with the Cr 3d PES spectra located at ∼1.3 eV below $E_{F}$ and having no emission near $E_{F}$.

  • The crystallographic properties and cationic distribution of $M_{0.2}Fe_{2.8}O_4$ (M =Mn, Ni, Cu) and $Fe_3O_4$ thin films prepared by sol-gel method have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and conversion electron M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy (CEMS). The ionic valence, preferred site, and hyperfine field of Fe ions of the ferrites could be obtained by analyzing the CEMS spectra. The $M_{0.2}Fe_{2.8}O_4$ films were found to maintain cubic spinel structure as in $Fe_3O_4$ with the lattice constant slightly decreased for Ni substitution and increased for Mn and Cu substitution from that of $Fe_3O_4$. Analyses on the CEMS data indicate that $Mn^{2+}$ and $Ni^{2+}$ ions substitute octahedral $Fe^{2+}$ sites mostly, while $Cu^{2+}$ ions substitute both the octahedral and tetrahedral sites. The observed intensity ratio $A_B/A_A$ of the CEMS subspectra of the samples exhibited difference from the theoretical value. It is interpreted as due to the effect of the M substitution for A and B on the Debye temperature of the site. The relative line-broadening of the B-site CEMS subspectra can be explained by the dispersion of magnetic hyperfine fields due to random distribution of M cations in the B sites.

  • The effects of ion-doping on $TiO_2$ nanotubes were investigated to obtain the optimal catalyst for the effective decomposition of Rhodamine B (RB) through UV photocatalytic oxidation process. Changing the calcination temperature, which changed the weight fractions of the anatase phase, the average crystallite sizes, the BET surface area, and the energy band gap of the catalyst, affected the photocatalytic activity of the catalyst. The ionic radius, valence state, and configuration of the dopant also affected the photocatalytic activity. The photocatalytic activities of the catalysts on RB removal increased when $Ag^+$, $Al^{3+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ were doped into the $TiO_2$ nanotubes, whereas such activities decreased as a result of $Mn^{2+}$ or $Ni^{2+}$ doping. In the presence of $Zn^{2+}$-doped $TiO_2$ nanotubes calcined at $550^{\circ}C$, the removal efficiency of RB within 50 min was 98.7%.

  • Extended Huckel calculations have been performed to obtain molecular orbital energies and the corresponding eigenvectors for $[M(III)O_3S_3]$ type complexes [M(111) = V(111), Cr(III), Mn(III), Fe(III) and Co(III)] adopting the valence basis set orbital $(nP_z)$ and the hybridized atomic orbital of ligands. The effects of the hybridized atomic orbital of ligands on the calculated dipole moments and 10 $D_q$ values are investigated. The calculated 10 $D_q$ values and dipole moments are close to the experimental values when the hybridized atomic orbital of ligands is used to obtain the eigenvector for $[M(III)O_3S_3]$ type complexes.

  • The dependence of the ionic conductivity on the B-site ion substitution in (Li0.5La0.5)Ti1-xMxO3 (M=Sn, Zr, Mn, Ge) system has been studied. Same valence state and various electronic configuration and ionic radius of Sn4+, Zr4+, Mn4+ and Ge4+(4d10(0.69$\AA$), 4p6(0.72$\AA$), 3d10(0.54$\AA$) and 3d3(0.54$\AA$), respectively) induced the various crystallographic variaton with substitutions. So it was possibleto investigate the crystallographic factor which influence the ionic conduction by observing the dependence of the conductivity on the crystallographic factor which influence the ionic conduction by observing the dependence of the conductivity on the crystallographic variations. We found that the conductivity increased with decreasing the radii of B-site ions or vice versa and octahedron distortion disturb the ion conduction. The reason for this reciprocal proportion of conductivity on the radius of B-site ions has been examined on the base of the interatomic bond strength change due to the cation substitutions. The results were good in agreement with the experimental results. Therefore it could be concluded that the interatomic bond strength change due to the cation substitutions may be the one of major factors influencing the lithium ion conductivity in perovskite(Li0.5La0.5) TiO3system.
