We are interested in studying the artificial photolysis of water which mimics the natural plant photosynthesis. In the artificial system there should be a proper photosensitizer, electron donor and electron acceptor. Since Mn-tetramer is known to be the essential part for the oxygten-evolving system in the natural photosynthesis, it is important to know or study the reactivity of Mn-porphyrins. As a model for the Mn-tetramer in the natural photosynthesis, we prepared the lipophilic and hydrophilic Mn-porphyrins. For the lipophilic porphyrin with long hydrocarbon chain, the long hydrocarbon chain was inserted in the porphyrin ring formation step. For the hydrophilic porphyrin, the porphyrin was sulfonated with sulfuric acid. These syntheses of lipophilic and hydrophilic Mn-porphyrins are significant, since the behaviors of these compounds will be different in the microemulsions or vesicles. We also found that the Mn-porphyrins were photoreduced in the microemulsion and water in the presence of amines.
The semiconducting ceramics having positive temperature coefficient of resistivity in he family of 0.25mol% $Sb_2O_3$ doped barium titanates were prepared with AST ($4Al_2O_3$.$9SiO_2$.$3TiO_2$) and $MnO_2$ as additives and these electrical properties were investigated. The PTCR characteristic in these ceramic materials was improved by the addition of AST and $MnO_2$ because the addition of AST decreased the room temperature resistivity and controlled grin size due to the formation of a liquid phase during sintering and the addition of $MnO_2$ improved by forming acceptor level on the intergranular layer. On dependence on the switching time as switching temperature was increased the initial power and switching time increased.

Mn/In$_2O_3$ systems with a variety of Mn mol${\%}$ were prepared to investigate the effect of Mn-addition on the catalytic activity of Mn/In$_2O_3$ in the oxidative coupling of methane. The oxidative coupling of methane was examined on pure In$_2O_3$ and Mn/In$_2O_3$ catalysts by cofeeding gaseous methane and oxygen under atmospheric pressure between 650 and 830 $^{\circ}C$. Although pure In$_2O_3$ showed no C$_2$ selectivity, both the C$_2$ yield and the C$_2$ selectivity were increased by Mn-doping. The 5.1 mol${\%}$ Mn-doped In$_2O_3$ catalyst showed the best C$_2$ yield of 2.6${\%}$ with a selectivity of 19.1${\%}$. The electrical conductivities of pure and Mn-doped In$_2O_3$ systems were measured in the temperature range of 25 to 100 $^{\circ}C$ at PO$_2$'S of 1 ${\times}$ 10$^{-7}$ to 1 ${\times}$ 10 $^{-1}$ atm. The electrical conductivities were decreased with increasing Mn mol${\%}$ and PO$_2$, indicating the specimens to be n-type semiconductors. Electrons serve as the carriers and manganese can act as an electron acceptor in the specimens. Manganese ions doped in In$_2O_3$ inhibit the ionization of neutral interstitial indium or the transfer of lattice indium to interstitial sites and increase the formation of oxygen vacancy, giving rise to the increase of the concentration of active oxygen ion on the surface. It is suggested that the active oxygen species adsorbed on oxygen vacancies are responsible for the activation of methane.
Microbial Fe(III) reduction is an important factor for biogeochemical cycle in anaerobic environments, especially sediment of freshwater such as lakes, ponds and rivers. In addition, the Fe(III) reduction serves as a model for potential mechanisms for the oxidation of organic compounds and the reduction of toxic heavy metals, such as chrome or uranium. Shewanella putrefaciens DK-1 was a gram-negative, facultative anaerobic Fe(III) reducer and used ferric ion as a terminal electron acceptor for the oxidation of organic compounds to $CO_{2}$ or other oxidized metabolites. The ability of reducing activity and utilization of various electron acceptors and donors for S. putrefaciens DK-1 were investigated. S. putrefaciens DK-1 was capable of using a wide variety of electron acceptor, including $NO_{3}^{-}$, Fe(III), AQDS, and Mn(IV). However, its ability to utilize electron donors was limited. Lactate and formate were used as electron donors but acetate and toluene were not used. Fe(III) reduction of S. putrefaciens DK-l was inhibited by the presence of either $NO_{3}^{-}$ or $NO_{2}^{-}$. Further S. putrefaciens DK-1 used humic acid as an electron acceptor and humic acid was re-oxidized by nitrate. Environmental samples showing the Fe(III)-reducing activity were used to investigate effects of the limiting factors such as carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus on the Fe(III) reducing bacteria. The highest Fe (III) reducing activity was measured, when lactate as a carbon source and S. putrefaciens DK-1 as an Fe(III) reducer added in untreated sediment samples of Cheon-ho and Dae-ho reservoirs.
The effects of MnO$_2$ and Fe$_2$O$_3$ on the piezoelectric properties of 0.05PMN-0.451PT-0.499PZ ceramics were investigated. The addition of MnO$_2$ increased mechanical quality factor (Q$_m$) but decreased the dielectric constant (K$^{T}_{33}$) and compliance (S$^{E}_{11}$) of the specimens. These results indicated that MnO$_2$ behaves as an acceptor in 0.05MN-0.451PT-0.499PZ ceramics. The electromecanical coupling coefficient (K$_P$) of 0.05PMN-0.451PT-0.499PZ ceramics slightly increased with the addition of MnO$_2$ however, the enhancement of $K_P$ was insignificant. A small amount of Fe$_2$O$_3$ was added to enhance the $K_P$ of the 0.05PMN-0.451PT-0.499PZ + 0.5 wt% MnO$_2$ ceramics. The addition of Fe$_2$O$_3$ largely increased $K_P$ through the increase of the K$^{T}_{33}$ and the polarization. The mechanical quality factor of the specimens decreased with the addition of Fe$_2$O$_3$however, the reduction was negligible.
Commercially available PTCR (Postive Temperature Coefficient of Resistivity) ceramics which have low room temperature resistance, high PTC effect and temperature coefficient were prepared by La3+ doped semiconducting barium calcium titanate soild solutions. PTCR characteristics were remarkably improved by addition of AST (1/3 Al2O3$.$3/4SiO2$.$1/4TiO2) and MnCl2. That can be explained by formation of liquid phase during sintering and acceptor level on the intergranular layer. Resistivity anormaly increased with decreasing cooling rate. Optimum manufacturing conditions were cooling rate below 100$.$C/hr, Ca and Mn content of 4 mol% &, 0.09-0.12mol% respectively.

$Cd_{1-x}Mn_xTe$ thin films were grown on GaTs (100) substrates by hot-wall epitaxy method. From the XRD measurements, it was found that CdTe/GaAs (100)film was grown as a single crystal with the same growth plane of (100) and $Cd_{1-x}Mn_xTe$film as a poly crystal as Mn content was increased, and the lattice constant was decressed with the similar gradient of bulk crystal as x was increased. From the PL measurements, $L_1$line due to the exciton trapped on an acceptor and $L_2$line due to an exciton trapped on a shallow potential fluctuation were observed, and $L_1$line was observed only in $Cd_{0.91}Mn_{0.09}$te but it was disappeared probably due to a stronger lacalization of excitons with increasing alloy fluctuation.$L_2$line was dominant in case of $x{\ge}0.2$and for higher Mn contents the broad transition about 2.0eV associated to the 3d levels of the $Mn^{2+}$ ion dominated the PL spectrum, and the $L_2$ transition become weaker and weaker. For$x{\ge}0.4$, the transition line about 2.0eV due to $Mn^{2+}$ion showed no shift.
2-Mercaptobenzothiazole was used as a highly selective and efficient carrier for the uphill transport of silver ion through a chloroform bulk liquid membrane. In the presence of thiosulfate ion as a suitable metal ion acceptor in the receiving phase, the amount of silver transported across the liquid membrane after 180 min was 90 ± 3.0%. The selectivity and efficiency of silver ion transported from aqueous solutions containing equimolar mixtures of $Zn^{2+}, Cu^{2+}, Co^{2+}, Ni^{2+}, Cd^{2+}, Pb^{2+}, Bi^{3+}, Fe^{2+}, Fe^{3+}, Pd^{2+}, Mn^{2+}, Hg^{2+}, Sn^{2+}, Ca^{2+}, Mg^{2+}, K^+, Na^+ and Li^+$ were investigated.
New porous BaTiO$_3$ thermistors were fabricated using graphite powders (0 to 10 wt. %) and their porosities were in the range of 9.1% to 16.2%. As results of impedance analysis, it was confirmed that the pores affected the grain-boundary resistance and the bulk (grain interior) resistance was constant as about 25 $\Omega$ at room temperature. The magnitude of PTCR effect $(p_{max}/p)$ markedly increased from 3 orders to 7 orders without addition of any acceptor dopant such as Mn or Cr.
The functional characteristics of a ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase) excreted from alkalophilic Bacillus sp. BL-31 that is highly specific for the intermolecular transglycosylation of bioflavonoids were investigated. The new ${\beta}$-CGTase showed high specificities for glycosyl acceptor bioflavonoids, including naringin, rutin, and hesperidin, and especially naringin. The transglycosylation of naringin into glycosyl naringin was then carried out under the conditions of 80 units of CGTase per gram of maltodextrin, 5 g/l of naringin, 25 g/l of maltodextrin, and 1 mM $Mn^{2+}$ ion at $40^{\circ}C$ for 6 h, resulting in a high conversion yield of 92.1%.
