Mixture experiments involve combining ingredients or components of a mixture and the response is a function of the proportions of ingredients which is independent of the total amount of a mixture. The purpose of the mixture experiments is to find the optimum blending at which responses such as the flavor and acceptability are maximized. We assume the quadratic or special cubic canonical polynomial model over the experimental region for a mixture since the current mixture is assumed to be located in the neighborhood of the optimal mixture. The cost of the mixture is proportional to the cost of the ingredients of the mixture and is the linear function of the proportions of the ingredients. In this paper, we propose mixture response surface methods to develop a mixture such that the cost is down more than ten percent as well as mean responses are as good as those from the current mixture. The proposed methods are illustrated with the well known the flare experimental data described by McLean and Anderson(1966).
Optimization of the concrete mixture design is a process of search for a mixture for which the sum of the cost of the ingredients is the lowest, yet satisfying the required performance of concrete. In this study, a statistical model was carried out to model a cost effective optimal mix proportioning of high strength self-compacting concrete (HSSCC) using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The effect of five key mixture parameters such as water-binder ratio, cement content, fine aggregate percentage, fly ash content and superplasticizer content on the properties and performance of HSSCC like compressive strength, passing ability, segregation resistance and manufacturing cost were investigated. To demonstrate the responses of model in quadratic manner Central Composite Design (CCD) was chosen. The statistical model showed the adjusted correlation coefficient R2adj values were 92.55%, 93.49%, 92.33%, and 100% for each performance which establish the adequacy of the model. The optimum combination was determined to be $439.4kg/m^3$ cement content, 35.5% W/B ratio, 50.0% fine aggregate, $49.85kg/m^3$ fly ash, and $7.76kg/m^3$ superplasticizer within the interest region using desirability function. Finally, it is concluded that multiobjective optimization method based on desirability function of the proposed response model offers an efficient approach regarding the HSSCC mixture optimization.
Many industrial products such as paints, ink and adhesives are composed of the ingredients of a mixture. In mixture experiments, the characteristics of quality(response) depends only on the proportions of the ingredients and does not depend on the total amount of the mixture. This article discusses the constrained mixture experimental design, the data analysis, and the optimum formulation of ingredients based on the two quality characteristics - taste and flavor. It IS shown that efficient designs can be constructed from D-optimal criterion. Special cubic models were selected as the final mixture response surfaces for both reponses. The desirability function was used for the optimization of the two responses.

The objective of this study was to optimize medium composition of initial pH, tryptone, glucose, yeast extract, and mineral mixture for production of bacteriocin by Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356, using response surface methodology. A response surface approach including new statistical and plotting methods was employed for design and analysis of the experiment. An interiorly augmented central composite design was used as an experimental design. A normal-distribution log-link generalized linear model based on a subset fourth-order polynomial ($R^2$=0.94, Mean Error Deviance=0.0065) was used as an analysis model. This model was statistically superior to the full second-order polynomial-based generalized linear model ($R^2$=0.80, Mean Error Deviance=0.0140). Nonlinear programming determined the optimum composition of the medium as initial pH 6.35, typtone $1.21\%$, glucose $0.9\%$, yeast extract $0.65\%$, and mineral mixture $1.17\%$. A validation experiment confirmed that the optimized medium was comparable to the MRS medium in bacteriocin production, having the advantage of economy and practicality.
It is well known that Premixed Charge Compression Ignition (PCCI) diesel engines according to many technologies such a change in injection timing, multiple injection strategy, cooled EGR, intake charging and SCV have the potential to achieve homogeneous mixture in the cylinder which result in lower NOx and PM as well as performance improvements. This may generate merely the infinite number of experimental conditions. The use of Response Surface Methodology (RSM) technique can considerably pull down the number of experimental set and time demand. This paper presents the effects of both fuel injection and engine operation conditions on the combustion and emissions in the PCCI diesel engine system. The experimental results have revealed that a change in fuel injection timing and multiple injection strategy along with various operating conditions affect the combustion, emissions and BSFC characteristics in the PCCI engine.
MRSM(modified response surface methodology)-2 model is presented for the prediction of boiling points in combustible solution of quaternary systems. This model requires only normal boiling points of pure substances and group-group parameters which are based on the group-group concepts without the use of experimental data under consideration. By means of this methodology, it is possible to predict the boiling points of the combustible mixture of quaternary systems by plotting of isothermal lines using computer graphics. The proposed methodology has been tested and compared successfully with reported boiling points in journals for the combustible solution of quaternary systems. It is hoped eventually that this methodology will permit prediction of the flash point and flammability limit for the combustible mixture of multicomponent systems.
Aged garlic has been reported to possess beneficial pharmacological activities, including anti-stress and anti-fatigue properties, and to exert protective effects on the cardiovascular system and liver. Pine needles are widely used in folk medicine and as food additives owing to their pharmacological properties such as anti-aging and anti-inflammatory effects. It has long been known that combining certain phytochemicals with other phenols or organic acids can produce synergistic effects. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop an optimal formula of aged garlic with added pine needle powder for improved antioxidant activity using the statistical technique of response surface methodology. The antioxidant activities of aged garlic mixed with pine needle powder were confirmed by measuring oxygen radical absorbance capacity and total polyphenol content. An optimized antioxidant formula was identified that contained 5.08 g aged garlic and 1.97 g pine needle powder. The antioxidant activities of the mixture prepared using this optimal formula were significantly higher than the predicted values according to an additive model. Hence, this study confirms that the addition of pine needle powder to aged garlic can improve its antioxidant activity. This study demonstrated an optimal mixing ratio to produce an aged garlic product with improved functionality through the addition of pine needle powder that could be successfully employed by the food industry to prepare functional foods.
This study was conducted to develop a recipe for a nutritional cookie with lotus root powder that had the optimal composition of ingredients and texture resulting in high preference by all age groups. Wheat flour was partially substituted with lotus root powder to reduce its content. Response Surface Methodology was used to analyze the measured results, which showed 16 experimental points including 2 replicates for lotus root powder, sugar and butter. The compositional and functional properties were measured, and these values were applied to a mathematical model. A canonical form and perturbation plot showed the influence of each ingredient on the final mixture product. The sensory evaluation results showed significant values in color (p<0.01), texture (p<0.05) and overall quality (p<0.05). As a result, the optimal sensory ratio was determined to be 22.59 g of lotus root powder, and 53.08 g of sugar for every 120 g of butter.
