  • In this paper, we investigated the compensation characteristics of distorted 16-channel WDM signal due to chromatic dispersion self phase modulation(SPM) and four-wave mixing(FWM). The bit rate and uniform frequency spacing of WDM channels are assumed to be 40 Gbps and 100 ㎓, respectively. The compensation method used in this approach is mid- span spectral inversion(MSSI), Highly-nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber(HNL-DSF) is used as a nonlinear medium of optical phase conjugator(On) in order to widely compensate WDM signal band. We confirmed that applying MSSI in WDM channels within special input power level compensates overall interferenced channels mainly due to FWM. But for long wavelength WDM channels having lower conjugated light power with respect to signal light power, compensation quality is deteriorated as dispersion coefficient of fiber becomes higher. Consequently, we confirmed that it is effective D apply MSSI with HNL-DSF as a nonlinear medium of OPC to WDM transmission link with relative small dispersion in order to compensate equally spaced WDM channels.

  • The local hydrulic characteristics in subchannels of 5$\times$5 nuclear fuel bundles with spacer grids were measured at upstream and downstream of the spacer grid for the investigation of the spacer grid effects on turbulent flow structure by using an LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimeter). The measured parameters are axial velocity and turbulent intensity, skewness factor, and flatness factor. Pressure drops were also measured to evaluate the loss coefficient for the spacer grid and the friction factor for rod bundles. From these data, it was found that the turbulent mixing and forced mixing occur up to $x/D^h=10$ and 20 from the spacer grid, respectively. The turbulence decay behind spacer grid behaves in the similar decay rate as turbulent flow through mesh grids or screens. Mixing factors useful in subchannel analysis code were correlated from the data and show the highest value near spacer grid and then have a stable values.

  • Field tests were conducted to investigate characteristics of the transverse mixing and to evaluate the dispersion coefficients in the meandering natural streams. The Sum River and the Cheong-mi Creek, tributaries of Han River, were selected as the test site, and measurements of the hydraulic and dispersion data were performed. In the tracer tests, the radioisotope was used as a tracer and injected into a flow on the instantaneous point source. Using the measured data, the longitudinal and transverse dispersion coefficients were evaluated and compared with the previous studies. The longitudinal dispersion coefficients, which were evaluated by application of the analytical solution, were about 0.5 $m^2$/s at the Sum River and 0.2 $m^2$/s at the Cheong -mi Creek. The transverse dispersion coefficients, which were evaluated by the analytical solution and the moment method, were ranging from 0.01 to 0.06 $m^2$/s for the Sum River and from 0.01 to 0.05 $m^2$/s for the Cheong-mi Creek.

  • A bentonite mixing with local soil widely used as liner layer for landfill should have low permeability less than $1{\times}10^{-7}cm/s$. But there are several limitations of bentonite used as liner layer, such as drying shrinkage cracking, ineffective waterproof ability under salt water condition like flocculation under sea water. The purpose of this research is the development of a salt resistance bentonite by mixing sepiolite and guar gum to overcome the weak points of bentonite to get high water resistance capacity and permeability coefficient below $1{\times}10^{-7}cm/s$ under salt water condition. After having performed drying shrinkage cracking test, swelling index test, compaction test, and hydraulic conductivity test we confirmed the optimal mixing ratio of materials and evaluated the performance of materials.

  • In this paper, we propose Korean monophthong recognition method optimizing muscle mixing based on facial surface EMG signals. We observed that EMG signal patterns and muscle activity may vary according to Korean monophthong pronunciation. We use RMS, VAR, MMAV1, MMAV2 which were shown high recognition accuracy in previous study and Cepstral Coefficients as feature extraction algorithm. And we classify Korean monophthong by QDA(Quadratic Discriminant Analysis) and HMM(Hidden Markov Model). Muscle mixing optimized using input data in training phase, optimized result is applied in recognition phase. Then New data are input, finally Korean monophthong are recognized. Experimental results show that the average recognition accuracy is 85.7% in QDA, 75.1% in HMM.

  • A theoretical equation, from which we can get a suitable ratio of bentonite at bentonite-mixed soil, was derived for desigri of the impermeable condition. Bentonite is a soil with great expansion property and it has the permeability lower than $1\times10^{-7}cm/sec$ in spite of its maximum expansion state. Accordingly if the void of soil is filled with the liquid of bentonite, water will flow only through the veid of bentonite liquid. And the permeability of bentonite-mixed soil will always satisfy the condition as impermeable zone. However, because it is very difficult to mix uniformly bentonite with soil, it is thought that the actual mixing ratio fur the impermeable zone will be grater than that by theoretical equation. Permeability tests were performed to check the equation and a modified equation was suggested from the experimental results.

  • Superabsorbent Polymer (SAP) expands inside concrete by absorbing water and contracts as it discharges water. Through this process, concrete can achieve the internal curing effect, but the space occupied by the expanded SAP remains as a void. In this study, the effects of SAP internal curing and voids were evaluated by evaluating the fundamental properties and chloride penetration resistance of SAP mixed concrete. Also, to evaluate the internal curing effect by SAP, the tests were carried out under water and sealed curing conditions, respectively. From the result, the compressive strength of water curing did not differ significantly according to the mixing ratio of SAP. In the case of sealed curing, however, the compressive strength tended to increase as the mixing ratio of SAP increased. The internal curing effect of sealed curing was considered to have influenced the increase in compressive strength. In the case of the chloride diffusion coefficient, the diffusion coefficient tended to decrease as the mixing ratio of SAP increased. In particular, as the sealed curing is applied, the chloride penetration resistance is further improved due to internal curing effect. If the curing conditions are different, it is considered inappropriate to estimate the chloride penetration resistance by the surface electrical resistivity.

  • In this study, the coefficient of permeability for cement mixtures including the powdered sludge of basalt, sand or fly ash with different mixed ratios was measured in order to reuse the powdered sludge of basalt in Jeju Island as the cut off materials. As the permeability test results, the coefficient of permeability for the cement mixtures with fly ash was increased with increasing the fly ash contents. The amount of fly ash in the cement mixtures should be mixed with less than 8 %. Meanwhile, the coefficient of permeability for the cement mixtures with sand was increased with increasing the sand contents. The amount of sand in the cement mixtures should be mixed with less than 40 %. According to the comparison result of cement mixtures including fly ash or sand, it is more advantageous to put the sand into the cement mixtures, rather than mixing the fly ash.

  • The build-up of the heat field in shallow coastal water due to a point source has been investigated using an analytical solution of a time-integral form derived by extending the solutions by Holley(1969) and also presented in Harleman (1971). The uniform water depth is assumed with non-isotropic turbulent dispersion. The alongshore-flow is assumed to be uni-directional, spatially uniform and oscillatory. Due to the presence of the oscillatory alongshore-flow, the heat build-up occurs in an oscillatory manner, and the excess temperature thereby fluctuates in that course and even in the quasi-steady state. A series of calculations reveal that proper choices of the decay coefficient as well as dispersion coefficients are critical to the reliable prediction of the excess temperature field. The dispersion coefficients determine the absolute values of the excess temperature and characterize the shoreline profile, particularly within the tidal excursion distance, while the decay coefficient determines the absolute value of the excess temperature and the convergence rate to that of the quasi-steady state. Within the e-folding time scale $1/k_d$ (where $k_d$ is the heat decay coefficient), heat build-up occurs more than 90% of the quasi-steady state values in a region within a tidal excursion distance (L), while occurs increasingly less the farther we go to the downstream direction (about 80% at 1.25L, and 70% at 1.5L). Calculations with onshore and offshore discharges indicate that thermal spreading in the direction of the shoreline is reduced as the shoreline constraint which controls the lateral mixing is reduced. The importance of collecting long-term records of in situ meteorological conditions and clarifying the definition of the heat loss coefficient is addressed. Interactive use of analytical and numerical modeling is recommended as a desirable way to obtain a reliable estimate of the far-field excess temperature along with extensive field measurements.
