Purpose: A reliable indicator of congested traffic speed is essential in providing the information of traffic flow states about motorway sections. The aim of this study is to propose an adaptive indicator of congested speed which is employed for deciding the traffic flow states for individual motorway sections using disaggregated section-based speed data. Method: Typically, the state of traffic flow is categorized into the three: uncongested, mixed, congested states. A method, presented in this study, was developed for identifying boundary speed values of road sections through categorizing the three traffic flow states with individual vehicular speed values. The boundary speed state of each road segment is determined using the speed distributions of mixed and congested traffic states. Result: Analysis results revealed that boundary speed values between mixed and congested states for road sections were similar to those of US and EU criteria (i.e., 48.28~66.0 kph). This indicates that boundary speed values could be different according to road sections. Conclusion: It is expected that the method and indicator, proposed in this study, could be efficaciously used for providing ad-hoc real-time traffic states and computing traffic congestion costs for motorway sections in the era of big data.
PURPOSES: The urban traffic problems can be defined as general problems for smooth traffic flow including maintenance of mass transportation system according to suddenly increased population, traffic regulations for vehicles and pollution problem. As a method for solving traffic jams, one of the traffic problems of late, interest in Intelligent Traffic System(ITS) is increasing sharply, which is a system managing traffic demand by providing passers with information on traffic state of path and road conditions before they pass the road through ATIS, a field of ITS. METHODS: Variable message signs(VMS) is used on the roads as a method for providing information to promote smooth traffic flow and safety and prevent traffic accidents in advance by providing drivers with various information while driving. RESULTS: Recently, as ITS industry has been vitalized and technical factors of VMS have developed, various kinds of information is provided but the effect of VMS has not been maximized due to its limited type. CONCLUSIONS: Therefore, this study intends to provide methods for effective information transfer by analyzing driver's visual behavior characteristics for VMS and presenting a basis for maximizing VMS effect after considering read by expression type.
Emerging automated driving environments will lead to a mixed traffic flow depending on the interaction between automated vehicles (AVs) and manually driven vehicles (MVs) because the market penetration rate (MPR) of AVs will gradually increase over time. Understanding the characteristics of mixed traffic conditions, and developing a method to control both AV and MV maneuverings smoothly is a backbone of the traffic management in the era of automated driving. To facilitate smooth vehicle interactions, the maneuvering of AVs should be properly determined by various traffic and road conditions, which motivates this study. This study investigated whether the aggressiveness of AV maneuvering, defined as automated driving aggressiveness (ADA), affect the performance of mixed traffic flow. VISSIM microscopic simulation experiments were conducted to derive proper ADAs for satisfying both the traffic safety and the operational efficiency. Traffic conflict rates and average travel speeds were used as indicators for the performance of safety and operations. While conducting simulations, level of service(LOS) and market penetration rate(MPR) of AVs were also taken into considerations. Results implies that an effective guideline to manage the ADA under various traffic and road conditions needs to be developed from the perspective of traffic operations to optimize traffic performances.

In this study, the impact of traffic flow on the market penetration rate of autonomous vehicles(AV) was analyzed using the data for the year 2020 of the Yongin IC~Yangji IC section of Yeongdong Expressway. For this analysis, a microscopic traffic simulation model VISSIM was utilized. To construct the longitudinal control of the AV, the Intelligent Driver Model(IDM) was built and applied, and the driving behavior was verified by comparison with a normal vehicle. An examination of the study results of mobility and safety according to the market penetration rate of the AV, showed that the network's mobility improves as the market penetration rate increases. However, from the point of view of safety, the network becomes unstable when normal vehicles and AVs are mixed, so there should be a focus on traffic management for ensuring safety in mixed traffic situations.

This study was undertaken to strategize the mixed traffic operation of autonomous vehicles in the pilot zone. This was achieved by analyzing the changes expected when autonomous vehicles are mixed in the autonomous vehicle pilot zone. Although finding a safe and efficient traffic operation strategy is required for the pilot zone to serve as a test bed for autonomous vehicles, there is no available operation strategy based on the mixture of autonomous vehicles. In order to presents a traffic operation strategies for each period of autonomous vehicle introduction, traffic efficiency and safety analysis was performed according to the autonomous vehicle market percentage rate. Based on the analysis results, the introduction stage was divided into introductory stage, transition period, and stable period based on the autonomous vehicle market share of 30% and 70%. This study presents the following traffic operation strategies. Considering the traffic flow operation strategy, we suggest the advancement of the existing road infrastructure at the introductory stage, and operating an autonomous driving lane and the mileage system during the transition period. We also propose expanding the operation of autonomous driving lanes and easing the speed limit during the stable period. In the traffic safety strategy, we present a manual and legal system for responding to autonomous vehicle accidents in the introductory stage, an analysis of the causes of autonomous vehicle accidents and the implementation of preventive policies in the transition period, and the advancement of the autonomous system and the reinforcement of the security system during the stable period. Through the traffic operation strategy presented in this study, we foresee the possibility of preemptively responding to the changes of traffic flow and traffic safety expected due to the mixture of autonomous vehicles in the autonomous vehicle pilot zone in the future.

Android malware steals users' private information, and embedded unsafe advertisement (ad) libraries, which execute unsafe code causing damage to users. The majority of such traffic is HTTP and is mixed with other normal traffic, which makes the detection of malware and unsafe ad libraries a challenging problem. To address this problem, this work describes a novel HTTP traffic flow mining approach to detect and categorize Android malware and unsafe ad library. This work designed AndroCollector, which can automatically execute the Android application (app) and collect the network traffic traces. From these traces, this work extracts HTTP traffic features along three important dimensions: quantitative, timing, and semantic and use these features for characterizing malware and unsafe ad libraries. Based on these HTTP traffic features, this work describes a supervised classification scheme for detecting malware and unsafe ad libraries. In addition, to help network operators, this work describes a fine-grained categorization method by generating fingerprints from HTTP request methods for each malware family and unsafe ad libraries. This work evaluated the scheme using HTTP traffic traces collected from 10778 Android apps. The experimental results show that the scheme can detect malware with 97% accuracy and unsafe ad libraries with 95% accuracy when tested on the popular third-party Android markets.

Autonomous driving technology, when commercialized, has the potential to improve the safety, mobility, and environmental performance of transportation networks. However, safe autonomous driving may be hindered by poor sensor performance and limitations in long-distance detection. Therefore, cooperative autonomous driving that can supplement information collected from surrounding vehicles and infrastructure is essential. In addition, since HDVs, AVs, and CAVs have different ranges of perceivable information and different response protocols, countermeasures are needed for mixed traffic that occur during the transition period of autonomous driving technology. There is a lack of research on traffic flow optimization that considers the penetration rate of autonomous vehicles and the different characteristics of each road segment. The objective of this study is to develop weights based on safety, operational, and environmental factors for each infrastructure control use case and autonomous vehicle MPR. To develop an integrated evaluation index, infra-guidance AHP and hybrid AHP weights were combined. Based on the results of this study, it can be used to give right of way to each vehicle to optimize mixed traffic.
A subsidiary-main track for passenger station is a low-speed track section distinct from a through route such as a main track. It is parallel to a through track and connected to it at both ends by switches. Sidetracks allow for fast, high priority trains to pass slower or lower priority trains going the same direction. They are important for efficiency to order and organize the flow of rail traffic. In this paper we first describe the minimum headway between trains using the concept of occupation time in a block section, which depends on block systems, signalling system and safety technology. And then a stepwise approach is presented to select station, which is suitable to install sidetrack for a given train-traffic pattern. This approach is tested with sample example data, which are surveyed from track geometry based on the to-be-constructed line.

A network of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) will be required to carry the traffics(CVR, VBR, UBR, ABR) generated by a wide range of services. The traffic ABR uses the remined space of the CBR/VBR traffics bandwith. The Rate-based, the Credit-based, and the mixed method that are implementing the control loop of ABR traffic service is on study. In this paper, a new algorithm that can be considered in ATM and effectively manage ABR traffic using VS/VD method and EPRCA algorithm is proposed on the switch of the Rate-based method

The objective of this study is to estimate and analyze the traffic density of continuous flow using the trajectory of individual vehicles and the headway of sample probe vehicles-front vehicles obtained from ADAS (Advanced Driver Assitance System) installed in sample probe vehicles. In the past, traffic density of continuous traffic flow was mainly estimated by processing data such as traffic volume, speed, and share collected from Vehicle Detection System, or by counting the number of vehicles directly using video information such as CCTV. This method showed the limitation of spatial limitations in estimating traffic density, and low reliability of estimation in the event of traffic congestion. To overcome the limitations of prior research, In this study, individual vehicle trajectory data and vehicle headway information collected from ADAS are used to detect the space on the road and to estimate the spatiotemporal traffic density using the Generalized Density formula. As a result, an analysis of the accuracy of the traffic density estimates according to the sampling rate of ADAS vehicles showed that the expected sampling rate of 30% was approximately 90% consistent with the actual traffic density. This study contribute to efficient traffic operation management by estimating reliable traffic density in road situations where ADAS and autonomous vehicles are mixed.
