A two-phase anaerobic reactor with a submerged microfiltration system was tested for its ability to produce methane energy from organic wastewater. A membrane separation system with periodic backwashing with compressed air was submerged in the acidogenic reactor. The cartridge type of microfiltration (MF) membrane with pore size of $0.5{\mu}m$ (mixed esters of cellulose) was tested. An AUBF (Anaerobic Upflow Sludge Bed Filter: 1/2 packed with plastic media) was used for the methanogenic reactor. Soluble starch was used as a substrate. The COD removal was investigated for various organic loading with synthetic wastewater of 5,000 mg starch/L. When the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of the acidogenic reactor was changed from 10 to 4.5 days, the organic loading rate (OLR) varied from 0.5 to $1.0kg\;COD/m^3-day$. When the HRT of the methanogenic reactor was changed from 2.8 to 0.5 days, the OLR varied from 0.8 to $5.8kg\;COD/m^3-day$. The acid conversion rate of the acidogenic reactor was over 80% in the 4~5 days of HRT. The overall COD removal efficiency of the methanogenic reactor showed over 95% (effluent COD was below 300 mg/L) under the highly fluctuating organic loading condition. A two-phase anaerobic reactor showed an excellent acid conversion rate from organic wastewater due to the higher biomass concentration than the conventional system. A methanogenic reactor combined with sludge bed and filter, showed an efficient COD and SS removal.

Objectives: To determine the combined effect of fatigue cyclic loading and thermocycling (CLTC) on the shear bond strength (SBS) of a resin cement to zirconia surfaces that were previously air-abraded with aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) particles at different pressures. Materials and Methods: Seventy-two cuboid zirconia specimens were prepared and randomly assigned to 3 groups according to the air-abrasion pressures (1, 2, and 2.8 bar), and each group was further divided into 2 groups depending on aging parameters (n = 12). Panavia F 2.0 was placed on pre-conditioned zirconia surfaces, and SBS testing was performed either after 24 hours or 10,000 fatigue cycles (cyclic loading) and 5,000 thermocycles. Non-contact profilometry was used to measure surface roughness. Failure modes were evaluated under optical and scanning electron microscopy. The data were analyzed using 2-way analysis of variance and ${\chi}^2$ tests (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: The 2.8 bar group showed significantly higher surface roughness compared to the 1 bar group (p < 0.05). The interaction between pressure and time/cycling was not significant on SBS, and pressure did not have a significant effect either. SBS was significantly higher (p = 0.006) for 24 hours storage compared to CLTC. The 2 bar-CLTC group presented significantly higher percentage of pre-test failure during fatigue compared to the other groups. Mixed-failure mode was more frequent than adhesive failure. Conclusions: CLTC significantly decreased the SBS values regardless of the air-abrasion pressure used.

This paper presents the fabrication and test of a micro cell exciter actuated by an electromagnetic force for the study on the chondrogenic differentiation of rabbit mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The micro cell exciter is designed to apply compressive loading to the alginate gel mixed with the MSCs. The magnetic cell exciter consists of an actuator component and a cartridge-type chamber component. An actuator is composed of a permanent magnet, a core and a coil. The chamber has seven PMMA wells and a cell culture Petri dish. Two types of alginate gels were stimulated by the cell exciters for 10 minutes every 12 hours for 7 days. In order to determine the expression of these matrix components during differentiation, RT-PCR analysis was performed. Collagen type II was expressed in the MSCs subjected to the compressive stimulation.
In this paper, a finite element with embedded displacement discontinuity which eliminates the need for remeshing of elements in the discrete crack approach is applied for the progressive fracture analysis of concrete structures. A finite element formulation is implemented with the extension of the principle of virtual work to a continuum which contains internal displacement discontinuity. By introducing a discontinuous displacement shape function into the finite element formulation, the displacement discontinuity is obtained within an element. By applying either a nonlinear or an idealized linear softening curve representing the fracture process zone (FPZ) of concrete as a constitutive equation to the displacement discontinuity, progressive fracture analysis of concrete structures is performed. In this analysis, localized progressive fracture simultaneous with crack closure in concrete structures under mixed mode loading is simulated by adopting the unloading path in the softening curve. Several examples demonstrate the capability of the analytical technique for the progressive fracture analysis of concrete structures.
By reducing PVP with $H_2NOH$.HCl and NaOH 2:2:1 mass ratios in aqueous ethanol, poly-N-vinyl pyrrolidone oxime [PVPO] was prepared with 92% yield. Applying the sol-gel concept, orthosilicic acid [OSA] was made by hydrolyzing TEOS with ethanol in 1:0.5 molar ratios using 1 N KOH aqueous solution as a catalyst. The OSA + PVPO + $_L$-Valine ($\alpha$-amino acid) were mixed with pure ethanolic medium in 1:2:2 mass ratios and refluxed at $78^{\circ}C$ and 6 pH for 6.5 h. A white residue of poly-N-vinyl pyrrolidone oximo-L-valyl-siliconate [POVS] appeared after 5 h. The heating of reaction mixture was stopped and the contents were brought to NTP. The residue formation of POVS was intensified with lowering a temperature and completely solidified within 5 h, was filtered using a vacuum pump with Whatmann filter paper no. 42. The residue of POVS was washed several times with 20% aqueous cold ethanolic solution and dried in vacuum chamber at $25^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. The MP was noted above $350^{\circ}C$. Structural and internal morphology were analyzed with IR and $^1H$-NMR, and SEM respectively. A drug loading and transporting ability of the POVS in water and at pH = 5 and 8 was determined chromatographically.
A unified formulation of finite layer methods (FLMs), based on the Reissner mixed variational theorem (RMVT), is developed for the three-dimensional (3D) coupled electro-elastic analysis of simply-supported, functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) plates with open- and closed-circuit surface conditions and under electro-mechanical loads. In this formulation, the material properties of the plate are assumed to obey an exponent-law varying exponentially through the thickness coordinate, and the plate is divided into a number of finite rectangular layers, in which the trigonometric functions and Lagrange polynomials are used to interpolate the in- and out-of-plane variations of the primary field variables of each individual layer, respectively, such as the elastic displacement, transverse shear and normal stress, electric potential, and normal electric displacement components. The relevant orders used for expanding these variables in the thickness coordinate can be freely chosen as the linear, quadratic and cubic orders. Four different mechanical/electrical loading conditions applied on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate are considered, and the corresponding coupled electro-elastic analysis of the loaded FGPM plates is undertaken. The accuracy and convergence rate of the RMVT-based FLMs are assessed by comparing their solutions with the exact 3D piezoelectricity ones available in the literature.

Recently the use of steel fibers has been increased in flexural members and columns of concrete structures subjected to cyclic loadings; such as bridge decks, highway roads, runway of airport, buildings, etc.. However only a few experimental tests have been carried out under fatigue loading. In the present study, the reinforced concrete beams with 1% and 2% steel fiber volume fraction are investigated with and without stirrups. It has been found that in fatigue tests, the failure of the beam is usually due to breaking of fibers rather than fiber pull-out. A comparison of experiments and numerical analysis using the nonlinear F.E.M. program (ADINA) is also presented herein.
A ship scheduling model is presented for the raw material transportation problem with yard storage constraints in a steel mill. The problem is formulated as 0, 1 mixed integer programming considering such constraints as loading port conditions, ship size and hold capacity, unloading conditions, and yard storage space. In addition, inventory related constraints including safety stock are taken into consideration to support the continuous operations of steel making process. The proposed model has been implemented and applied successfully to a real world problem, and its results show the improvement of performance compared to the traditional method. For example, the arrival dates of ships are determined satisfying the constraints. The total inventory level is minimized at the stock yard as a result. Also, the safety inventory level is always kept at the planning stage, and the standard deviation of total inventory level is reduced significantly. Further research is expected to develop efficient heuristics to have a better response time for even larger scale problems.
A novel self-humidifying composite membrane for the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) at low humidity condition was developed. The Pt/$TiO_2$ catalyst particles were synthesized via supercritical impregnation methods. Pt precursor was dissolved in supercritical carbon dioxide and impregnated onto $TiO_2$ particles. Pt precursors were platinum(II) acetylacetonate, Dimethyl(1,5-cyclooctadiene) platinum(II) and we controlled the ratio of Pt to $TiO_2$. The impregnated Pt precursor was converted to $TiO_2$ supported Pt nanoparticle under various reducing conditions. Pt/$TiO_2$ catalyst particles were dispersed uniformly into the Nafion solution, and then Pt/$TiO_2$/Nafion composite membrane was prepared using solution-cast method. The self-humidifying composite membrane could minimize membrane conductivity loss under dry conditions due to the presence of catalyst and hydrophilic Pt/$TiO_2$ particles. To optimize the performance of MEA, amount of ionomer loading was controlled. And mixed catalysts were used. The cell performance of MEA was obviously improved under dry conditions at $65^{\circ}C$.
An experimental study was carried out to identify the fatigue fractue behavior of weld zone in generally rolled steel for marine structure. The bending an shear loads were applied simultaneously on the specimens to simulate real load condition for marine structure. The effect of the stress intensity factor under mode I with II loading condition on the initiation and the propagation of a crack were investigated, with particular emphaiss on mode II. When the $K_{II}$ stress intensiy factor in mode II was applied under mode I load condition, the growth behavior of a crack seems to be affected mainly by the anisotropic characteristic of materials. Especially, when the crack was located in and near the weld zone and parallel to th weld line, the propagation behaviour was turned out to be quite different from that of the base metal along the direction transverse to the weld line. In general, the propagation veiocity of the cracks in and near the weld zone was found to be slower that the velocity in base metal.
