  • Thermal energy storage (TES) is a technology that stores surplus thermal energy at high or low temperatures for later use when the customer needs it, not just when it is available. TES systems can help balance energy demand and supply and thus improve the overall efficiency of energy systems. Furthermore, the conversion and storage of intermittent renewable resources in the form of thermal energy can help increase the share of renewable resources in the energy mix which refers to the distribution of energy consumption from different sources, and to achieve this, it is essential to combine renewable resources with TES systems. Underground TES using rock caverns, known as cavern thermal energy storage (CTES), is a viable option for large-scale, long-term TES utilization although its applications are limited because of the high construction costs. Furthermore, the heat loss in CTES can significantly be reduced due to the heating of the surrounding rock occurred during long-term TES, which is a distinctive advantage over aboveground TES, in which the heat loss to the surroundings is significantly influenced by climate conditions. In this paper, we introduced important factors that should be considered in the shape and multiple layout design of TES caverns, and proposed guidelines for storage space design.

  • The mean pH of wastewater discharged from the plating process is 2, so a less amount of alkali is required to raise pH 2 to 5. In addition, if sodium sulfite is used to raise pH 5 to 9 in the secondary treatment, caustic soda or slaked lime is not necessary or only a small amount is necessary because sodium sulfite is alkali. Thus, it is considered desirable to use only $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ in the primary treatment. At that time, the free cyanide removal rate was highest as around 99.3%, and among heavy metals, Ni showed the highest removal rate as around 92%, but zinc and chrome showed a low removal rate. In addition, the optimal amount of $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ was 0.3g/L, at which the cyanide removal rate was highest. Besides, the free cyanide removal rate was highest when pH value was 5. Of cyanide removed in the primary treatment, the largest part was removed through the precipitation of ferric ferrocyanide: $[Fe_4(Fe(CN)_6]_3$, and the rest was precipitated and removed through the production of $Cu_2[Fe(CN)_6]$, $Ni_2[Fe(CN)_6]$, CuCN, etc. Furthermore, it appeared more effective in removing residual cyanide in wastewater to mix $Na_2SO_3$ and $Na_2S_2O_5$ at an optimal ratio and put the mixture than to put them separately, and the optimal weight ratio of $Na_2SO_3$ to $Na_2S_2O_5$ was 1:2, at which the oxidative decomposition of residual cyanide was the most active. However, further research is required on the simultaneous removal of heavy metals such as chrome and zinc.

  • Background Bleeding can be a problem in wound debridement. In search for an effective hemostatic agent, we experimented with a chitosan film combined with the recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rh-EGF), hypothesizing that it would achieve effective hemostasis and simultaneously enhance arterial healing. Methods Forty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats were used, and 96 puncture wounds were made. The wounds were divided into the following four groups: treated with sterile gauze, treated with gelatin sponge, treated with chitosan, and treated with chitosan combined with rh-EGF. Immediate hemostasis was evaluated, and arterial healing was observed histologically. Results Groups B, C, and D showed a significant rate of immediate hemostasis as compared to group A (P<0.05), but there were no significant differences among groups B, C, and D. Histologically, only group D showed good continuity of the vessel wall after 1 week. It was the only group to show smooth muscle cell nuclei of the vessel wall. Conclusions We observed that chitosan has an effective hemostatic potential and the mix of rh-EGF and chitosan does not interfere with chitosan's hemostatic capabilities. We also identified enhanced healing of vessel walls when rh-EGF was added to chitosan. Further research based on these positive findings is needed to evaluate the potential use of this combination on difficult wounds like chronic diabetic ulcerations.

  • Using a strain-controlled rheometer, the steady shear flow properties of aqueous xanthan gum solutions of different concentrations were measured over a wide range of shear rates. In this article, both the shear rate and concentration dependencies of steady shear flow behavior are reported from the experimentally obtained data. The viscous behavior is quantitatively discussed using a well-known power law type flow equation with a special emphasis on its importance in industrial processing and actual usage. In addition, several inelastic-viscoplastic flow models including a yield stress parameter are employed to make a quantitative evaluation of the steady shear flow behavior, and then the applicability of these models is also examined in detail. Finally, the elastic nature is explained with a brief comment on its practical significance. Main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows: (1) Concentrated xanthan gum solutions exhibit a finite magnitude of yield stress. This may come from the fact that a large number of hydrogen bonds in the helix structure result in a stable configuration that can show a resistance to flow. (2) Concentrated xanthan gum solutions show a marked non-Newtonian shear-thinning behavior which is well described by a power law flow equation and may be interpreted in terms of the conformational status of the polymer molecules under the influence of shear flow. This rheological feature enhances sensory qualities in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic products and guarantees a high degree of mix ability, pumpability, and pourability during their processing and/or actual use. (3) The Herschel-Bulkley, Mizrahi-Berk, and Heinz-Casson models are all applicable and have equivalent ability to describe the steady shear flow behavior of concentrated xanthan gum solutions, whereas both the Bingham and Casson models do not give a good applicability. (4) Concentrated xanthan gum solutions exhibit a quite important elastic flow behavior which acts as a significant factor for many industrial applications such as food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic manufacturing processes.

  • The natural resources of Jeju are recognized as the new regional image of that clean island. Reflecting these trends, this study is initiated to develop a textile design with the motive of persimmon, a natural resource of Jeju, and to apply it to infant's and children's clothes. Its purpose is to highlight the image of persimmon, a traditional dye, as a regional signature for Jeju. Product development procedure included, understanding the use of persimmon for fashion products, analyzing Infants' and Children's designer collections over the last three seasons (focused on 2014S/S, 2015S/S, and 2016S/S), and surveying the Children's Clothes market for persimmon dyeing in Jeju. The conclusion was that, the natural resources of Jeju are highly valuable, and should be applied to textile design and apparel products for children. Utilizing Jeju persimmon was actively studied, but, the market for the Jeju persimmon natural - dyeing products is extremely limited. Moreover, the apparel products for infants and children represent old-fashioned styles, despite their higher prices. Therefore, using the formative characteristics of persimmon for each theme was suggested for development of patterns for textile design. Pattern designs were expressed using textured textile screen-printing, embroidery and $appliqu{\acute{e}}$ for infants' and children's clothes. In this study, a total of 10 items were prepared as apparel products for infants and children. All items were designed considering mix-and-match, potential, with each other or with regular mass-market products. These results are expected to contribute to highlighting the unique image of Jeju and to help promote fashion culture products.

  • This study evaluated the storage stability of a variety of sauce products in the Korean market, determined primary quality indices for three typical products, and proposed functional relationships that are useful for determining shelf life at different temperatures. Most of the products examined were found to combine hurdles of low pH, low water activity, and the use of heat processing as methods for producing the required storage stability while maintaining the sensory quality of the products. For a meat extract solution produced for cold noodles (pH=4.3; $a_w=0.98$), the primary quality change determining shelf life was lipid oxidation, determined here by the TBA value. The primary quality index of a soybean paste seasoning mix (pH=4.0; $a_w=0.78$), which had a microbial load of 2.8 log (CFU/g), was a decrease in its pH. The primary quality index for a sandwich spread (pH=4.0; $a_w=0.88$) was changes in its surface color. The temperature dependence of changes in the primary quality indices can be described by the Arrhenius equation, which can estimate the shelf life at any arbitrary limit as a function of temperature. The activation energies for changes in the primary quality indices of the meat extract solution, the soybean paste seasoning, and the sandwich spread were 20.3, 27.2, and 43.5 kJ/mol, respectively.

  • Recently, difficulties in soft ground improvement that caused by effectiveness of the ground improvement, the durability and environmentally friendliness of the injection material come to the fore. This paper studies the field applicability of the SCM in reinforcement and seepage cutoff of the back of an existing continuous wall. SCM uses double rod which imposes heavy pressure($10-100kgf/cm^2$) to disturbed, cut, discharge, and mix the ground. It is observed that a bulb is formed by using cement paste and environmentally friendly injection materials with minimal alkali leaching. Unconfined compression test and fish poison tests are performed. Test results indicate that the method results in higher durability, less leaching through use of the environmentally friendly injection material, and faster mobilization of the strength. In addition, field tests confirm the formation of the bulb and the seepage cutoff wall.

  • There are many methods to improve the performance of concrete. Especially, admixture materials used in concrete as the replacement materials of cement, could fluidity, strength and durability of concrete. So recently, the terminology "High-Performance Concrete(HPC)" has been introduced into the construction industry. Most hige-performance concrete have a high cementitious content and a low water-cementitious material ratio. The proportions of the individual constituent vary depending on lacal preferences and local materials. Therefore, many trial batches are usually necessary before a successful mix is developed. The objective of this experiments is to investigate the fundamental properties of high performance concrete based binary cimentitious materials such as ordinary portland cement and ground granulated blast furnace slag. In this study, Use granulated blast furnace slag (30%, 45%, 60%) and water cementitious content (26%, 30%, 34%) take the gauge of capacity that strength, carbonation and XRD, X-Ray Diffraction test

  • Recent trends show an increased usage of 'colored concrete', a inorganic pigmented concrete mix, especially in small to large scale buildings. However, due to lack of regulations, current usage of colored concrete indicates a lack of consideration for safety factors and aesthetic aspects. Sometimes color pigmentation used in paints are inappropriately used in concrete, and in many cases the addition of coloring material is done without proper research into how structural characteristics of resulting concrete may have been affected. To resolve these issues, some construction sites apply ASTM or ACI regulations. However, such regulations incorporate elements that cannot be applied in Korea, which makes their domestic application impractical. In this paper, the primary aim is to determine to what extent the basic material characteristics of concrete is affected by the variety and quantity of different color pigments, and in so doing establish a foundation for future reference in case of construction projects involving the use of colored concrete.

  • Domestic area of most be happened chloride deicer damage. Because daily mean temperature is below 0$^{\circ}C$ from the area of domestic most. Concrete durability influence Air Content. Presently, We used to AE(air-entraining agent) for increase freeze-thaw durability. So, on concrete Air Spacing ratio used $200{\mu}m{\sim}230{\mu}m$ in Canada and under $250{\mu}m$ in Japan institution. Use of Air content has been and will continue to be a major part of concrete durability and scaling. Chloride-containing chemicals such as calcium chloride or rock salt are main deicers for the road. The prepared optimum mix concrete in this study show that freeze-thaw and scaling resistance of Non-AE(air content 1.5%) and AE (air content 4.5%, 7.2%). Solution concentrations of deicing agent were good result, and the pore system and change of hydration products is not difference comparing before freeze-thaw test.
