A Short Course Development and Analysis to Recognize Importance of Software for Youth using Arduino and App Inventor

  • The aim of this study was to develop and analyze a short course educating App Inventor and Arduino that showed the importance of software for youth. The course consists of a total of 10 missions for a 4 hour course divided into 2 parts, each 2 hours respectively. We conducted a basic course of Arduino for hardware and software, Processing for server programming, and App Inventor for programming for smartphones. The final mission was to send a signal to a server with a smartphone and to control light connected to a relay which passes Arduino connected with a server and serial communication. Participants completed 95% of missions, and we found the course had an educational effect for improving creativity and realization of software importance.

  • This paper proposes the new adaptive gain control monitoring sensor for the marine IT system. The marine IT system sensors make it possible to conduct search missions, record climate changes, provide pollution control, study marine life, conduct survey missions, tactical surveillance, and predict natural disturbances in the ocean. In this paper, the adaptive gain control circuit which changes its parameters according to the ambient noise situation for obtaining the precise location information of marine IT system sensor is developed and analyzed. The performance characteristics for ensuring the precise location information of marine system sensor is presented and analyzed. The theoretical and experimental studies have been carried out. The presented results from the above investigation show considerably excellent performance for the monitoring of the marine system.

  • Recently, the applications of unmanned system are steadily increasing. Unmanned automatic system is suitable for routine mission such as reconnaissance, environment monitoring, resource conservation and investigation. Especially, for the ocean environmental probe mission, many ocean engineers had scoped with the routine and even risky works. The unmanned surface vessel designed for sea probes can replace the periodic and routine missions such as water sampling, temperature and salinity measuring, etc. In this paper, an unmanned surface vessel was designed for ocean environmental probe missions. A classical and an adaptive fuzzy control system were designed and tested for the unmanned surface vessel. The design methodologies and performance of the surface vessel and fuzzy control algorithm were illustrated and verified with this unmanned vessel system designed for sea probes.

Time-Efficient Trajectory Planning Algorithms for Multiple Mobile Robots in Nuclear/Chemical Reconnaissance System (화방 정찰 체계에서의 다수의 이동 로봇을 위한 시간 효율적인 경로 계획 알고리즘에 대한 연구)

  • Since nuclear and chemical materials could damage people and disturb battlefield missions in a wide region, nuclear/chemical reconnaissance systems utilizing multiple mobile robots are highly desirable for rapid and safe reconnaissance. In this paper, we design a nuclear/chemical reconnaissance system including mobile robots. Also we propose time-efficient trajectory planning algorithms using grid coverage and contour finding methods for reconnaissance operation. For grid coverage, we performed in analysis on time consumption for various trajectory patterns generated by straight lines and arcs. We proposed BCF (Bounded Contour Finding) and BCFEP (Bounded Contour Finding with Ellipse Prediction) algorithms for contour finding. With these grid coverage and contour finding algorithms, we suggest trajectory planning algorithms for single, two or four mobile robots. Various simulations reveal that the proposed algorithms improve time-efficiency in nuclear/chemical reconnaissance missions in the given area. Also we conduct basic experiments using a commercial mobile robot and verify the time efficiency of the proposed contour finding algorithms.

Anti-diabetic activity of Thespesia lampas Dalz & Gibs on alloxan induced rats

  • Anti-diabetic effect was observed with Thespesia lampas Dalz & Gibs (Family: Malvaceae) when given as a root extract in normal as well as alloxan induced diabetic rats. The effects, however, were more pronounced in diabetic animals in which administration of plant extract for 15 days after alloxan induced diabetes, significantly reduced blood glucose levels. After alloxan induced diabetes it was observed that both standard drug (glibenclamide) and aqueous extract of Thespesia lampas were significantly superior to control in reducing blood sugar on long term treatment (15 days). The aqueous extract of T. lampas (300 and 600 mg/kg) reduced the blood glucose levels from $349.2{\pm}7.2$ to $120.7{\pm}4.6$ and $346.3{\pm}3.4$ to $101.8{\pm}6.3$, respectively. The data suggested that T. lampas could be of beneficial in diabetes mellitus in controlling blood sugar. The present investigation established pharmacological evidence to support the folklore claim as an anti-diabetic.

  • The KOMPSAT-1(Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-1) is the first multi-purpose satellite funded by Korean government for the purpose of remote sensing and scientific data gathering in KOREA. It has successfully achieved its own mission since Dec. 21, 1999. This paper provides an overview of the KOMPSAT-1 missions and addresses the nominal mission planning and operation flow. This paper also describes the routine operational orbit determination and orbit prediction process using GPS navigation solution data. Meanwhile, some problems due to inexperience of the multiple mission operations during LEOP(Launch & Early Orbit Phase) and early normal mission were investigated.   • In this paper, a operation network system equipped with onboard wireless communication systems and ground-based mission control systems is proposed for swarm flight of small UAVs. This operating system can be divided into two networks, UAV communication network and ground control system. The UAV communication network is intend to exchange the informations of navigation, mission and flight status with minimum time delay. The ground control system consisted of mission control systems and UDP network. Proposed operation network system can make a swarm flight of various UAVs, execute complex missions decentralizing mission to several UAVs and cooperte several missions. Finally, PILS environments are developed based on the total operating system.

  • After the Iraq war, the Korean government established an Iraq Peace and Reconstruction Division, 'Zaytun'. Zaytun division has been dispatched in northern Iraq, since August 3, 2004. As one of our missions, 'Zaytun Hospital' was built to support the demand for the insufficient medical facilities and supplies in Iraq, which was opened on November 27, 2004. Zaytun Hospital, equipped with modern operation room and general ward, has been composed of 12 clinical departments. Although we had many problems, such as difficulty of communication with Iraqis, connection with medical facilities of Iraq and risk of terrorism, we overcame these difficulties and were able to achieve our missions successfully. I wish that our special experience in Iraq are will be the guideline to other oral and maxillofacial surgeons, who want to help those individual in unfortunate areas such as Iraq.

  • Solar sail propulsion uses solar radiation pressure to propel spacecraft without propellant, and it is useful for deep-space missions and continuos orbit maneuver missions. After a brief introduction of solar sail dynamics, locally optimal trajectories in Sun-centered and Earth-centered orbits are analyzed. Numerical simulations for the optimal trajectories are performed. Trajectory for the rendezvous with Halley comet is generated, and different planet escape methods are compared.

  • Mission effectiveness may be defined as a probability that a system can successfully meet an intended mission demand within a given time when operated under specified conditions. This study deals with the Mission effectiveness of a replenishment ships that is performing several types of missions. The essential attributes and their related factors affecting the replenishment missions are established, and then, a mathematical mission effectiveness model is constructed with a replenishment mission characteristics for a basis. Mission effectiveness for a mission is determined by finding the joint probability measure of the following three attributes : operational readiness of the replenishment ships at the start of a mission ; mission reliability of the replenishment ships ; capability of successfully accomplishing intended objectives given an environmental condition. The model is solved analytically. Operational readiness of the replenishment ships in found by the assumed data. Mission reliability and capability are calculated based on the assumed probability distributions. The model would be a useful tool to evaluate mission effectiveness as it is very a replenishment ships.
