  • There has been necessity to supplement the fin database to improve the accuracy of low-fidelity aerodynamic solver for missile configuration. In this study, fin database is expanded by in-house solver, utilized in the triservice data the previously established into regions beyond means of CFD. Fin alone data of CFD analysis results in the original region is matched well with triservice data originated from the wind tunnel tests. Extensive fin aerodynamic data from CFD analysis is added to the existing database of the low-fidelity solver. For confirmation, aerodynamic characteristics of body-tail and body-canard-tail missile configurations is computed using upgraded low-fidelity solver at transonic region. The result using improved solver shows good agreements with wind tunnel test and CFD analysis results, which implies that it becomes more accurate.

  • This paper addresses the problem of the software update or upgrade of embedded equipments on a missile assembly with booster. Because the embedded equipments are assembled delicately and closely one another with various communication and power cables, they should be very carefully disassembled to directly upgrade the software of a certain embedded equipment. This may cause not only the costs for disassembly and reassembly but also additional tests to verify the completeness of the reassembled missile as a missile assembly with booster. This paper presents an indirect data transfer technique based on MIL-STD-1553B through Guidance Control Unit to easily upgrade the software of other equipments without any additional costs caused by disassembly and reassembly. The presented technique was successfully applied to the software upgrade of various equipments on real missile assembly with booster.

  • In order to guide a flying object which uses a seeker(SKR) and an inertial navigation system(INS) properly, we should confirm that axes of both equipments are aligned in the scope expected. In this paper we have proposed a method to measure the misaligned angle between a SKR and an INS during the system integration procedure. And we expanded this method to measure misalignments between several SKRs and an INS in case of captive flight test.

  • A flame deflector prevents a launch system from thermal damage by deflecting the exhaust flame of the launch vehicle. During the deflection of the flame, the flame deflector is subjected to a high-temperature and high-pressure flow, which results in thermal ablation damage at the surface. Predicting this ablation damage is an essential requirement to ensure a reliable design. This paper introduces a numerical method for predicting the ablation damage phenomena based on a one-way fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis. In the proposed procedure, the temperature and convective heat transfer coefficient of the exhaust flame are calculated using a fluid dynamics analysis, and then the ablation is calculated using a finite element analysis (FEA) based on the user-subroutine UMESHMOTION and Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) adaptive mesh technique in ABAQUS. The result of such an analysis was verified by comparison to the ablation test result for a flame deflector.

  • The United States has built a missile defense system from the Cold War era, but since the end of the Cold War era, there have been many changes in international situation and threats. The forces of power divided between the United States and the Soviet Union have become increasingly threatened by China's willingness to expand its external influence, declaration of strong Russia and North Korea and Iran's nuclear armament and advanced ballistic missile technology. In response to this threat change, the Missile Defense Agency(MDA) has established strategies and policies, but its parent law has not been revised. United States changed to the FY2017 National Defense Authorization Act (FY2017 NDAA) including changed missile defense strategy. In this paper, I check US ballistic missile defense strategies included in the FY2017 NDAA and compare what changes have been made in existing strategies.

  • In this paper, aerodynamic characteristics of missile configuration with various grid fins in subsonic flow. To investigate the effects of grid fin shape, four types of experimental models were used. In addition, to examine aerodynamic characteristics of missile configurations with various grid fins according to effects of Reynolds numbers and configurations of grid fins, 6-components aerodynamic forces and moments were measured by internal balance in wind tunnel test.

  • The acceleration and the angular velocity that include natural frequencies of a missile detected by Inertial Measurement Unit(IMU) are transmitted to the control loop of a missile. The control loop command that is calculated using above signals can cause the resonance of the missile while it flies. Hence it is common to adapt the filter and the control loop for attenuating or eliminating the undesired signals such as natural frequencies. This paper introduces the new test technique using a floating system for performance evaluation of the designed filter and the control loop prior to a flight test. The proposed scheme can check out the degradation property of vibration in the filter and the control loop, while the conventional hardware-in-the-loop simulation(HILS) scheme cannot.

  • We proposed a design method for squib current supply & interlock circuits in guided-missile fire control systems. In order to design squib current supply circuits, various missile squib loads including line resistance and squib devices have to be considered in advance minimizing probability of redesign of circuits and reducing the development cost by implementing the most proper squib current supply circuit. Also, we presented a hardware interlock logic instead of the commonly used software safety logic to improve the safety of guided-missile fire control systems. The proposed squib interlock circuit enhances safety requirements of guided-missile fire control systems. We confirmed that simulation and measurement results of the proposed design method are the same as theoretical analysis results.
