  • Current methodologies used for the inference of thin film stresses through curvature measurements are strictly restricted to stress and curvature states which are assumed to remain uniform over the entire film/substrate system. These methodologies have recently been extended to non-uniform stress and curvature states for the thin film subject to non-uniform, isotropic misfit strains. In this paper we study the same thin film/substrate system but subject to non-uniform, anisotropic misfit strains. The film stresses and system curvatures are both obtained in terms of the non-uniform, anisotropic misfit strains. For arbitrarily non-uniform, anisotropic misfit strains, it is shown that a direct relation between film stresses and system curvatures cannot be established. However, such a relation exists for uniform or linear anisotropic misfit strains, or for the average film stresses and average system curvatures when the anisotropic misfit strains are arbitrarily non-uniform.

  • The EAM simulation of nanoindentation was performed to investigate misfit dislocation slip in the Ag/Cu. The film layer, whose thickness in the range of 2-5nm, was indented by a spherical indenter with the N$\'{o}$se-Hoover thermostat condition. The simulation shows that the indentation position relative to misfit dislocation (MFD) has the effect on the dislocation, glide up or cross slip, for Ag film layer thickness less than 4 nm. Elastic energy variation during MFDs slip was revealed to be a key factor for the softening of Ag/Cu. The critical film layer thickness was evaluated for each case of Ag/Cu according to the spline extrapolation technique.

  • A misfit dislocation generation in InAs epilayers grown on (001) InP substrates (oriented $2^{\circ}$ off (001) toward the [110] direction) using metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition was studied. The InAs film of 17 nm thickness grown at $405^{\circ}C$ showed the three different arrays of dislocations: a straight orthogonal array to the <110> direction, an array to the >100> direction, and an array tilted by a degree of $5\sim45^{\circ}$ from the [110] direction. All of the dislocations had a/2<101> Burgers vectors inclined $45^{\circ}$ to the interface. Upon annealing at $660^{\circ}C$ the InAs films with 60, 140 and 220 nm thicknesses, most of the misfit dislocations became the Lomer type $(\sim100%)$ oriented exactly along the >110> direction. These misfit dislocation spacings were decreased with increasing the InAs thickness up to 220 nm thickness. This phenomena was interpreted by the relationship between the dislocation interaction energy among parallel misfit dislocations and the opposite remnant InAs epilayer strain energy. The distance between misfit dislocations was measured by transmission electron microscopy.

  • Phase transition of the Lennard-Jonesian binary system with a free surface was studied by employing molecular dynamics simulation. The main focus of this study was to investigate the effect of size misfit and solute concentration on phase transition during heating and quenching. For a binary system with a free surface, the melting point and the critical quenching rate decrease as size misfit and solute concentration increase.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of prostheses misfit, cantilever on the stress distribution in the implant components and surrounding bone using three dimensional finite element analysis. Two standard 3-dimensional finite element models were constructed: (1) 3 ITI implant supported, 3-unit fixed partial denture and (2) 3 ITI implant supported, 3-unit fixed partial denture with a distal cantilever. variations of the standard finite element models were made by placing a $100{\mu}m$ or $200{\mu}m$ gap between the fixture, the abutment and the crown on the second premolar and first molar. Total 14 models were constructed. In each model, 244 N of vertical load and 244 N of $30^{\circ}$ oblique load were placed on the distal marginal ridge of the distal molar. von Mises stresses were recorded and compared in the crowns, abutments, crestal compact bones, and trabecular bones. The results were obtained as follows: 1. In the ITI implant system, cement-retained prostheses showed comparatively low stress distributions on all the implant components and fixtures regardless of the misfit sizes under vertical loading. The stresses were increased twice under oblique loading especially in the prostheses with cantilever, but neither showed the effects of misfit size. 2. Under the oblique loading and posterior cantilever, the stresses were highly increased in the crestal bones around ITI implants, but effects of misfit were not shown. Although higher stresses were shown on the apical portion of trabecular bones, the effects by misfit were little and the stresses were increased by the posterior cantilever. 3. When the cement loss happened in the ITI implant supported FPD with misfit, the stresses were increased in the implant componets and supporting structures.

  • Accurate fit of the implant prosthesis is important in ensuring long term success of osseointegrated implant. Inaccurate fit of the implant prosthesis may give rise to complications and mechanical failure. To evaluate fite of the implant prosthesis, the development of the methods of analyzing the degree of misfit is important in clinical practice. To analyze the degree of the misfit of implant prosthesis, modal testing was used. A 2-dimensional finite element modal testing was accomplished. Four 2-dimensional finite element models with various levels of misfit of implant prostheses were constructed. Thickness gauges were simulated to make misfit in the implant prostheses. With eigenvalue analysis, the natural frequencies of the models were found in the frequency domain representation of vibration. According to the difference of degree of misfit, natural frequencies of the models were changed.

  • Interfacial atomic structure (chemical structure) of a Pd/ZnO hetero junction was investigated by atomic resolution high voltage transmission electron microscopy (ARHVTEM). A misfit dislocation did not work as a stress accommodation mechanism in the ZnO(0001)/Pd (111) interface. But the periodic stress localization occurred in the ZnO($10\bar{1}0$)/(200) interface. The periodicity of the local strain coincided with that of misfit dislocation. Atomic structure image of the ARHVTEM showed that an atomic arrangement across the interface was in the order of O-Zn-Pd. It was shown that mechanical weakness of the ZnO(0001)/Pd(111) interface against cyclic heating is attributable to the absence of the periodic stress localization of the misfit dislocation.

  • Purpose: The present study aimed to evaluate which of the following imaging methods best assessed misfit at the tooth-restoration interface: (1) bitewing radiographs, both conventional and digital, performed using a photostimulable phosphor plate (PSP) and a charge-coupled device (CCD) system; (2) panoramic radiographs, both conventional and digital; and (3) cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: Forty healthy human molars with class I cavities were selected and divided into 4 groups according to the restoration that was applied: composite resin, composite resin with liner material to simulate misfit, dental amalgam, and dental amalgam with liner material to simulate misfit. Radiography and tomography were performed using the various imaging methods, and the resulting images were analyzed by 2 calibrated radiologists. The true presence or absence of misfit corresponding to an area of radiolucency in regions subjacent to the esthetic and metal restorations was validated with microscopy. The data were analyzed using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and the scores were compared using the Cohen kappa coefficient. Results: For bitewing images, the digital systems (CCD and PSP) showed a higher area under the ROC curve (AUROC) for the evaluation of resin restorations, while the conventional images exhibited a larger AUROC for the evaluation of amalgam restorations. Conventional and digital panoramic radiographs did not yield good results for the evaluation of resin and amalgam restorations (P<.05). CBCT images exhibited good results for resin restorations(P>.05), but showed no discriminatory ability for amalgam restorations(P<.05). Conclusion: Bitewing radiographs (conventional or digital) should be the method of choice when assessing dental restoration misfit.

  • The coherent interface energies and misfit strain energies of Fe/XN (X=Ti, Zr, Hf) systems were calculated by first principles method. The interface energies in Fe/TiN, Fe/ZrN and Fe/HfN systems were 0.343, 0.114, and 0.030 $J/m^2$, respectively. Influence of bond energy was estimated using the discrete lattice plane/nearest neighbor broken bond(DLP/NNBB) model. It was found that the dependence of interface energy on the type of nitride was closely related to changes of the bond energies between Fe, X and N atoms before and after formation of the Fe/XN interfaces. The misfit strain energies in Fe/TiN, Fe/ZrN, and Fe/HfN systems were 0.239, 1.229, and 0.955 eV per 16 atoms(Fe; 8 atoms and XN; 8 atoms). More misfit strain energy was generated as the difference of lattice parameters between the bulk Fe and the bulk XNs increased.
