The discussion on folk painting (minwha) has been continued till recent in various ways. MinWha is applied by painting artists and also utilized as a basic material of design. These are the attempts approved by the viewpoint of the 'Korean beauty'. In saying so, minwha symbolizes for typical types of Korean painting, and is articulated as an aspect of forgotten spirit. However, despite the fact of Minwha's frequent application, and its evident originality, it remains only the thread of the existence. Although minwha has a lot of commonalities and similarities with the characteristics of cartooning, a decisive attempt of cartooning is hardly shown through. Therefore, this paper is aim to classify creative paintings by the distinctive features of minwha, such as exaggeration and abridgment, sarcasm and current affair aspect, common technique of art drawing, caricatured element, expression of an ideal world, various techniques from artist's different comprehension, etcetera and to make opportunity to constructively apply these features in cartoons. The types of minwha are mostly classified by the contents of the painting. However, since the purpose of this thesis is to find caricatured aspects in minwha, it will be largely classified by the elements of animal, plant, human, insect species, finny tribe, feathered tribe, and nature phenomenon. This classification takes advantage of accessibility to understand the characterization of the object, and leads to take a positive approach.

This research is aimed to discuss for Korean cultural contents; symbol structure of Minwha painting which not only expresses openness, flexible expression and methods of communication of our ancestors but also possibly passes down as precious cultural heritage to modern society with new developed mediums. From this perspectives, as a method of research, modern jewelry design is created through digital process with linguistics analysis of its symbol structure that contains universal wishes of people. As a result, this research showed jewelry design and design process, titled "Blossom" and "Big Smile" grafting modern technology of 3D digital tool onto universal meaning symbolized by Peony flower, wealth and honor, and also grafted modern manufacturing methods of 3D printing and laser cut onto openness and flexible thinking in symbol structure in Minwha.

The current study aims to link Korean tradition to modern culture; to re-produce patterns of lotus depicted in Minwha, The study also aims to discover the beauty of Korean tradition and to modernize it. The current study is based upon document searches(including research papers) and the Internet searches. Through these searches, it investigates the concept of Minhwa, the origin of lotus depiction and its symbolic meanings, the traits of such pattern. Based upon this investigation, the study attempts to modernize the patterns of lotus and apply the modernized patterns to designing shirts. The process which employs the lotus patterns illustrated in Minhwa to shirt design includes four sub-processes: selecting, allocating, coloring, and selecting production techniques. The sub- process of selecting patterns is two folded: the first stage covers carbon-copying the distinctive features of lotus, lotus leaf, lotus bud, lotus pip, and lotus stem; the second stage is making these features suitable to shirt sizes. For the process of coloring those shirts, Piccaso's work(Pablo Picasso, 1881~1973) has been selected and the colors in his work have been adopted to dye the rest of the shirts as well as the lotus features. The process of selecting production techniques includes ornament tail in order to modernize the patterns allocated in the shirts. Once these processes are completed, the shirts are made on a scale of real-life size. These processes of creating shirt design by modernizing traditional patterns will hopefully contribute to researchers expanding the domain of shirt design.
