In this paper a pH process of a weak acid with a strong base is modeled into a bilinear form, and a self-tuning pH control algorithm which is robust against initial values of solution and disturbances is presented. The control algorithm employs the recursive least square method for the parameter estimation and the generalised minimum variance criterion as the objective function. The computer simulation shows that the tracking of desired pH values is obtained in satisfactory manner regardless of the initial values chosen for the process.

Consider the problem of estimating a multivariate normal mean with an unknown covarience matrix under a weighted sum of squared error losses. We first provide hierarchical Bayes estimators which shrink the usual (maximum liklihood, uniformly minimum variance unbiased) estimator towards a regression surface and then prove the admissibility of these estimators using Blyth's (1951) method.

This paper presents a class of discrete adaptive controller that can be applied to a plant without sufficient a priori information. It is well known that the GMV(Generalized Minmum Variance) contrlller performs satisfactorily if the plant time delay is known. By introducing the long-range prediction into the GMV controller, robustness to the time delay can be improved, although optimality is lost. Such an idea motivates a predictive control system to be proposed here, where the system minimizes multi-stage cost via the GMV approach. Moreover, the detuning control weight is determined by an on-line tuning method. It is shown that robustness, computational efficiency, and performance of the resulting control system are improved as compared with those of the GPC(Generalized Predictive Control)system.
Passive cavitation imaging method is used to observe the ultrasonic waves generated when a group of bubbles collapses. A problem with passive cavitation imaging is a low resolution and large side lobe levels. Since ultrasound signals generated by passive cavitation take the form of a pulse, the amplitude distribution of signals received across the receive channels varies depending on the direction of incidence. Both the centroid and flatness were calculated to determine weights at imaging points in order to discriminate between the main and side lobe signals from the signal amplitude distribution of the received channel data and to reduce the side lobe levels. The centroid quantifies how the channel data are distributed across the receive channel, and the flatness measures the variance of the channel data. We applied the centroid weight and the flatness to the passive cavitation image constructed using the delay-and-sum focusing and minimum variance beamforming methods to improve the image quality. Using computer simulation and experiment, we show that the application of weighting in delay-and-sum and minimum variance beamforming reduces side lobe levels.

In this paper, the finite element method was used for the flow and strength analysis of aluminum alloy under friction stir welding. The simulations were carried out using Sysweld s/w, and the modeling of the sheet was executed using Unigraphics NX6 s/w. The welding variables for the analysis were the shoulder diameter, rotating speed, and welding speed of the tool. Additionally, a three-way factorial design method was applied to confirm the effect of the welding variables on the flow and strength analysis with variance analysis. From these results, the rotating speed had the greatest influence on the maximum temperature, and the maximum temperature was $578.84{\pm}12.72$ at a confidence interval of 99%. The greater the rotating speed and shoulder diameter, the greater the difference between maximum and minimum temperature. Furthermore, the shoulder diameter had the largest influence on von Mises stress, and the von Mises stress was $184.54{\pm}12.62$ at a confidence interval of 99%. In addition to the increased shoulder diameter, welding speed, and rotating speed of the tool increased the von Mises stress.
The magnitude of wear should be at a minimum for numerous automobile and aeronautical components. In the current work, composites were prepared by varying the cenosphere content using the conventional stir casting method. A uniform distribution of particles was ensured with the help of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Three major parameters were chosen from various factors that affect the wear. A wear test was conducted with a pin-on-disc apparatus; the controlling parameters were volume percentages of reinforcement of 5, 10, 15, and 20%, applied loads of 9.8, 29.42, and 49.03 N, and sliding speeds of 1.26, 2.51, and 3.77 m/s. The design of the experiments (DOE) was performed by varying the different influencing parameters using the full factorial method. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the effects of the parameters on the wear rate. Using regression analysis, a response curve was obtained based on the experimental results. The parameters in the resulting curve were optimized using the Genetic Algorithm (GA). The GA results were compared with those of an alternate efficient algorithm called Neural Networks (NNs).
Radioactive waste should be solidified before being disposed of in the repository to eliminate liquidity or dispersibility. Cement is a widely used solidifying media for radioactive waste, and cement solidified waste should satisfy the minimum compressive strength of the waste acceptance criteria of a radioactive repository. Although the compressive strength of waste should be measured by the test method provided by the waste acceptance criteria, the method differs depending on the operating repository of different countries. Considering the measured compressive strength changes depending on test conditions, the effect of test conditions should be analyzed to avoid overestimation or underestimation of the compressive strength during disposal. We selected test conditions such as the height-to-diameter ratio, loading rate, and porosity as the main factors affecting the compressive strength of cement solidified radioactive waste. Owing to the large variance in measured compressive strength, the effects of the test conditions were analyzed via statistical analyses using parametric and nonparametric methods. The results showed that the test condition of the lower loading rate, with a height-to-diameter ratio of two, reflected the actual cement content well, while the porosity showed no correlation. The compressive strength assessment method that reflects the large variance of strengths was suggested.

This paper proposes an automatic object segmentation and background composition method for video communication over consumer mobile phones. The object regions were extracted based on the motion and color variance of the first two frames. To combine the motion and variance information, the Euclidean distance between the motion boundary pixel and the neighboring color variance edge pixels was calculated, and the nearest edge pixel was labeled to the object boundary. The labeling results were refined using the morphology for a more accurate and natural-looking boundary. The grow-cut segmentation algorithm begins in the expanded label map, where the inner and outer boundary belongs to the foreground and background, respectively. The segmented object region and a new background image stored a priori in the mobile phone was then composed. In the background composition process, the background motion was measured using the optical-flow, and the final result was synthesized by accurately locating the object region according to the motion information. This study can be considered an extended, improved version of the existing background composition algorithm by considering motion information in a video. The proposed segmentation algorithm reduces the computational complexity significantly by choosing the minimum resolution at each segmentation step. The experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm can generate a fast, accurate and natural-looking background composition.
Morphological characteristics of Kalopanox pictus Nakai were studied to examine population differentiation of this species. Based on a phenogram of using 23 morphological characteristics, differentiation of regions were distinct. Collections of 138 specimens from nine populations served as operational taxonomic unit (OTU's) were examined for phenotypic similarity and morphological variation using clustering (Ward's minimum variance method) and principal component analysis (PCA). The first three principal components were responsible for 77.0% of the total variance. Principal component 1 explained 52% of the total variance and was contributed to by the number of palmately parted, the number of pinnately lobed, and width between two lateral lobe apex.
This paper deals with optimum design criteria for maximum torque density & minimum torque ripple of a Flux Switching Motor (FSM) using response surface methodology (RSM) & finite element method (FEM). The focus of this paper is to find a design solution through the comparison of torque density and torque ripple which vary with rotor shape. And then, a central composite design (CCD) mixed resolution was introduced and analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to determine the significance of the fitted regression model. The proposed procedure allows one to define the rotor dimensions, starting from an existing motor or a preliminary design.
