Mechanical Properties of Municipal Solid Wastes (비위생 매립토의 역학적 물성)

  • Mechanical properties of Municipal Solid Wastes(MSW) and their influencing parameters were studied by using a series of triaxial compression tests and resonant column tests. The shear strength of MSW can be modeled by a bilinear failure criterion. As the unit weight increasing, cohesion and internal friction were increased linearly on semi-log scale. As the proportion of waste to soil increases, maximum shear moduli tend to decrease whereas minimum damping ratios increase. Shear moduli and damping of degradable waste are higher than those of non-degradable MSW.

  • The electric charge generated by flowing insulation liquid can create hazardous spark in transfer line and receiving tank etc. These electrification has generally been measured by current measurement with a ammeter connected to the receiving tank. This paper reports on the experimental result obtained by this method. As a experimental results: The injected charge value for unit volume increased in the following condition, the edge of the needle electrode was sharp, the number of needle electrode was fewer, the edge of the needle electrode was located close to the inside wall. When the charge density in the charge reducer is constant, electrode current and electrode potential by the charge injection from outside increase with increasing of oil velocity and streaming current. The electrode potential in charge reducer is made maximum value at edge point of reducer inside and minimum value at center line of charge reducer.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the variations of out-of- roundness due to its assessment methods for the practical workpieces. Experiments were carried out with the test specimens having the typical roundness profile. The roundness measuring system which has the autocentripetal functions and the automatic centering table unit was used. From the experimental results, it was found that the ratio of LSC to MZC values varied with the shape of roundness profiles, and the rate of variation for out-of-roundness was increased logarithmically with the increment of undulations by the effect of filter. Therefore, it is suggested that the least squares center method should be useful with the sufficient accuracy except for some special cases in the roundness profiles, and the condition of filter has considerable influence upon the out-of-roundness to be measured.

Teaching learning-based optimization for design of cantilever retaining walls

  • A methodology based on Teaching Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO) algorithm is proposed for optimum design of reinforced concrete retaining walls. The objective function is to minimize total material cost including concrete and steel per unit length of the retaining walls. The requirements of the American Concrete Institute (ACI 318-05-Building code requirements for structural concrete) are considered for reinforced concrete (RC) design. During the optimization process, totally twenty-nine design constraints composed from stability, flexural moment capacity, shear strength capacity and RC design requirements such as minimum and maximum reinforcement ratio, development length of reinforcement are checked. Comparing to other nature-inspired algorithm, TLBO is a simple algorithm without parameters entered by users and self-adjusting ranges without intervention of users. In numerical examples, a retaining wall taken from the documented researches is optimized and the several effects (backfill slope angle, internal friction angle of retaining soil and surcharge load) on the optimum results are also investigated in the study. As a conclusion, TLBO based methods are feasible.

The FPGA Implementation of Wavelet Transform Chip using Daubechies′4 Tap Filter for DSP Application

  • The wavelet transform chip is implemented with Daubechies' 4 tap filter. It works at 20MHz in Field Programmable Gate array (FPGA) implementation of Quadrature Mirror Filter(QMF) Lattice Structure. In this paper, the structure contains taro-channel quadrature mirror filter, data format converter(DFC), delay control unit(DCU), and three 20$\times$8 bits real multiplier. The structures for the DFC and DCU need to he regular and scalable, require minimum number of regular, and thereby lead to an efficient and scalable architecture for the Discrete Wavelet Transform(DWT). These results present the possibility that it can be used in Digital Signal Processing(DSP) application faster than Fourier transform at small area with lour cost.

  • Increasing demands on precision machining with computerized numerical control (CNC) machines have necessitated that the tool to move not only position error as small as possible, but also with smoothly varying feedrates in space. This paper presents a new high precision interpolation algorithm for 3-dimensional (3D) Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) curve in the reference-pulse CNC technique. Based on the minimum path error strategy, real-time NURBS interpolator was developed in software and this was implemented with a PC-NC milling machine. The several experimental results have shown that the proposed NURBS interpolator is useful for the high precision machining of complex shapes. It is expected that this algorithm can be applied to the CNC machines for the machining of 3D free-form surfaces.

Image Comparison Using Directional Expansion Operation

  • Masks are generated by adding different fonts of learning data characters in pixel unit, and pixel values belonging to each of the masks are divided into 3 groups. Using the directional expansion operators, we expand the text area of the test data character into 4 diagonal directions in order to create the boundary areas to distinguish it from the background area. A mask with a minimum average discordance is selected as the final recognition result by calculating the degree of discordance between the expanded test data and the masks. Image comparison using directional expansion operations more accurately recognizes test data through 4 subdivided recognition processes. It is also possible to expand the ranges of 3 groups of pixel values of masks more evenly such that new fonts can easily be added to the given learning data.

  • The study investigated the actual conditions of U.S. nursing-home facilities and Korean nursing homes and conducted a comparative analysis of those nursing facilities to propose the following suggestions for facility improvement: 1.) The number of sickbeds per nursing unit in Korea should be maintained a level of more than 30 beds like the United States, and each rest room in a residential facility should have an area of at least 4.2 square meters. 2.) Each room of a nursing home should be occupied by four or less persons for privacy. 3,) The minimum areas of residential rooms should be larger than 9.2 sq. meters for single rooms and 6.1 sq. meters for quadruple rooms. 4.) Nursing homes for the elderly need to improve rest room spaces and interior fishes to prevent them from falling down and getting hurt and thus help them live safely.

  • In MPEG-21 Multimedia Framework, Digital Item (DI) is the minimum unit fur processing and delivering the multimedia contents. So how to process, manipulate and represent DI is a very important problem in the standpoint of interoperability for each terminal and provide., and Digital Item Processing (DIP) regarding this issue. This paper suggests technologies which are concerning how DIP should interact with other parts of MPEG-21 (Digital Item Adaptation (DIA), Intellectual Property Management and Protection (IPMP), etc.). For this concept, this paper uses the video summary contents which can describe the hierarchical structures of original multimedia contents. In MPEG-21 environment, the usage of this summary video is very useful delivery and consumption way in view of network burden, efficient accessing to contents.

  • By integrating WDM to OPS unit which plays an important role for the reliability of CPN, we made it possible to provide CATV, VOD, and high-speed data services simultaneously and to meet the requirements for new services in the future. For the design of optimal system, the link analysis of power budget has been performed. Also, the prototyped system has been tested with STM-1 level signals to confirm functions such as transmission, distribution, and protection. The results proved that when occurred out-of-order or recovery of ONU, the system did the pertinent switching with minimum loss for high-speed data services. Also for video distribution services, the system has distributed STM-1 level signals successfully.
