  • Purpose: This study was designed to find the correlations between physical activity and insulin resistance of the middle-aged adults. Methods: One hundred thirty one subjects participated in this study were age 40-60 from Y university's center for physical exercise in W city. The data were collected from August 5 to October 5, 2009. To measure physical activity, the contracted Korean version of the Self-Report of Physical Activity Questionnaires of IPAQ was used. Insulin resistance was measured using fasting glucose levels, serum insulin levels, and HOMA method (serum insulin${\times}$fasting glucose/22.5). Results: The continuous physical activity overall in this study was on average $1,792.30{\pm}2,216.81$ MET (min/week), and as a result of categorical classification: no activity was 66 subjects (50.4%); minimum activity, 41 (31.3%); and health-improving activity, 24 (18.3%), respectively. The overall degree of insulin resistance in these subjects was $2.20{\pm}2.62$(0.28-12.74). There was negative correlation between moderate intensity activity and insulin resistance (r= -.189, p<.05). Conclusion: These results revealed that promoting moderate-intensity physical activity is important in preventing and improving insulin resistance and possibly other metabolic risk factors in the middle-aged adults.

  • In this study, corrosion resistance of steel in cracked-reinforced concrete was performed according to experimental method. Mixed design is OPC, 30% PFA, 60% GGBS and 10% SF, respectively. Moreover, corrosion resistance test was measured using ultra testing machine for 0.3mm crack induction. The corrosion resistance of blended concrete shows the results following OPC > 10%SF > 30% PFA > 60% GGBS after 60days curing. In case of mass loss test, embedded reinforcement in OPC concrete surveyed the minimum corrosion and appeared better corrosion resistance than blended concrete. As a result, corrosion resistance of sound concrete is higher than cracked concrete. Moreover, corrosion resistance of binary concrete is lower than OPC.

  • Ground impedance for the large grounding system is measured according to the IEEE Standard 81.2 which is based on the revised fall-of-potential method of installing auxiliary electrode at a right angle. When the auxiliary electrodes are located at an angle of $90^{\circ}$, the ground impedance inevitably includes the error due to earth mutual resistance. In this paper, in order to accurately measure the ground impedance of vertically-driven ground electrodes, error rates due to earth mutual resistance are evaluated by ground resistance and ground impedance measuring devices and compared with calculated values. As a result, the measured results are in good agreement with the computed results considering soil layer with different resistivity. The error rates due to earth mutual resistance decrease with increasing the length of ground electrode in the case that the ratio of the distance between the ground rod to be measured and the auxiliary electrodes to the length of ground electrode(D/L) is same. The ground impedance should be measured at the minimum distance between the auxiliary electrodes that will have an estimated measurement accuracy due to earth mutual resistance.

  • The important properties of EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) redispersible polymer was waterproof, densification of internal pore space of concrete and ball bearing and micro filler. Also, the significant role of polypropylene(PP) fiber was crack control and blockade of movement for deterioration factors. The most studies for EVA were limited in the field of mortar and PP fiber reinforced concrete had been studied in the state of being restricted unit water content, rich mix and mixing much of the fiber without considering construction site. Therefore, the control mix design were applied in ready mixed concrete using 10 % fly ash of total cement weight used in batch plant. On the basis of control mix design, EVA contents ranging from 0 % to 10 % of total cement weight and PP fiber contents ranging from 0 % to 0.5 % of EVA concrete volume were used in the mix designs. The results showed the maximum compressive strength value was measured at EVA 5.0 % and PP fiber 0.1 %, the minimum water absorption ratio was at EVA 10 % and PP fiber 0 %, the durability factor for freezing and thawing resistance was at EVA 5.0 % and PP fiber 0.3 % and the minimum weight reduction ratio of resistance to sulfuric acid attack was at EVA 10 % and PP fiber 0.5 % after curing age 42days. Meanwhile, From these results, PP fiber reinforced EVA concrete would be very benefit, if each optimal mix types were used in hydraulic structures, underground utilities and agricultural structures.

  • Purpose : This study aims to seek out the risk of low-temperature burns and fire. Method : Hot vests are connected by higher voltage than walking voltage. Results : Accordingly, the possibility of low-temperature burns and fire was proved high. It was also shown that hot vests with relatively lower resistance on heat rays reached a higher temperature as the same voltage was applied. Conclusion : There are some problems with hot vests because they do not have any safety devices like a thermostat or a timer to prevent temperature increasing rapidly. For the purpose of reducing the risk of low-temperature burns and fire, setting the standard of the minimum resistance temperature and regulating the use of heat rays with lower resistance are necessary.

  • The appropriate level of irrigation for turfgrasses is vital to the performance of the turfgrass as well as conservation of water. Linear gradient irrigation system (LGIS) facilitates long-term study of turf performance under continuous irrigation gradients at extreme ends of the irrigation scale. The objectives of this study were to: a) determine the minimum irrigation requirements and relative drought resistance in three warm season turfgrasses; and b) evaluate the medium to long-term effects of irrigation levels on turf persistence, weed invasion, and susceptibility to diseases. Results suggest that grasses differed in drought resistance and persistence under variable irrigation regimes. Irrigation (Ep) required for consistent acceptable turf quality for respective grasses was Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis (61%), Zoysia matrella L. Merr (73%), and Stenotaphrum secundatum 'Palmetto' (86%). Brown patch infection was most prevalent in Stenotaphrum secundatum 'Palmetto' at 12 and 125% Ep irrigation. Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis and Zoysia matrella L. Merr were better able to adapt to the various irrigation regimes, and this ability allowed these species to resist drought, and maintain turf coverage which in turn, kept weeds and the occurrence of diseases at bay. Ranking these grasses for their drought tolerance abilities showed that Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis had the most outstanding resistance against drought, followed by Zoysia matrella L. Merr, and lastly, Stenotaphrum secundatum 'Palmetto'. Despite having the highest irrigation requirement, Stenotaphrum secundatum 'Palmetto' was still not able to maintain persistence at high irrigation regimes. Likewise, this grass also lost turf coverage at low irrigation levels.

  • Lincomycin as one of the lincosamides antibiotics have been mainly used in human and livestock fields, but have not been used in aquaculture. In this study, the distribution of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values against lincomycin and the detection of the macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin (MLS) resistance gene were confirmed in bacterial pathogens isolated from cultured olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). Of the 107 strains isolated from Jeju, 36 strains of Gram-positive bacteria and 71 strains of Gram-negative bacteria were identified. Most of Streptococcus spp. was found to have a MIC value of less than or equal to 0.5 ㎍/mL, and Edwardsiella piscicida was found to have a MIC value higher than 1,024 ㎍/mL. V. harveyi and V. alginolyticus mostly showed MIC values of 256 ㎍/mL, but V. scophthalmi displayed values of 8~64 ㎍/mL. In the detection of MLS resistance gene, erm(B) was detected in 9 strains of Streptococcus spp., and erm(A) was confirmed in one strain.

  • Thirty-eight Vibrio spp. were isolated from the sea waters harvested from the 22 stations located on the west coast of the Korean peninsula in September 2006. The isolates consisted of V. parahaemolyticus (n=21), V. alginolyticus (n= 16) and V. cholerae non-01 (n=1), among which 35 isolates displayed resistance against two of the tested antibiotics. Among the 38 isolates, 18 isolates exhibited multi-drug resistance against more than four 4 antibiotics. In particular, minimum inhibitory concentration $(MIC)_{50}$ and $MIC_{90}$ of ampicillin-resistant isolates were as high as $2,048{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ and $4,096{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ respectively. $\beta$-lactamase production was examined to analyze the ampicillin-resistance. Some Vibrio spp. isolates produced $\beta$-lactamase, however antibiotics resistance pattern and $\beta$-lactamase production were not clearly related to each other. A genetic relationship between resistance and gene expression was confirmed in the ampicillin-resistant isolates.

  • Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica is a common microbial flora in pet turtles, which could opportunistically become pathogenic to human. Their possession of aminoglycoside resistance genes has important significance both in humans and animal medicine. In this study, twenty-one Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica were isolated from thirty-five individual turtles purchased from pet shops and online markets in Korea. In order to characterize the aminoglycoside susceptibility patterns, antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed against gentamicin, amikacin and kanamycin of aminoglycoside antimicrobial group. Each of the isolates showed susceptibility to all tested aminoglycosides in disk diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) tests. PCR assay was carried out to determine aminoglycoside resistance genes, integron and integron mediated aminoglycoside genes. None of the isolates showed aac(3)-IIa, aac-(6')-Ib, armA, aphAI-IAB aminoglycoside resistance genes. Only, five isolates (24%) harbored class 1 integron related IntI1 integrase gene. The results suggest that Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica strains isolated from pet turtles are less resistance to aminoglycosides and don't harbor any aminoglycosides resistance genes.

  • In this paper, the increase in chloride resistance of footing concrete at coastal area was evaluated by replacement of Mineral Admixture. In KBC 2009, the footing concrete's minimum specific concrete strength at coastal area is determined to 35MPa. However, this is criteria only based on the strength aspect. Thus, it is not considered to increase the chloride resistance by replacement of Mineral Admixture. According to the test results of chloride ions penetration resistance, 35MPa class concrete with OPC 100% shown inaccessible state. Low-strength (24~30MPa class) concretes with Mineral Admixture, however, presented better performances. In addition, chloride diffusion coefficient tests showed identical appearance. Therefore, the current KBC's chloride resistance criteria based on only concrete strength has to review for the reason it can cause many problems (ex. cost increases by growing concrete strength and the environmental issues by a lot of cement use).
